| Customer Reviews: Nothing is sacred in the magical musical world of Glee December 15, 2009 Truecolours09 (London, UK) 22 out of 25 found this review helpful
To enjoy this album, it's important to set aside concerns about artistic integrity or spontaneous creativity. This is a kind of superb, hyper-realised karaoke in which classic songs are given a polish and sent out to work their magic all over again. At times it produces pleasant but standard covers ('Endless Love', 'Don't Make Me Over') but occasionally there is something fresh that reignites the song ('True Colours', 'You Can't Always Get You Want', 'Don't Rain On My Parade').
The 'Glee sound' is typically based on layered harmonies, very strong 'show tune' vocals (with a couple of notable exceptions which seem to owe much to autotune) and a melody that is pushed right to the front of the mix. This can be beguiling when a track like the archly caustic 'Smile' by Lily Allen becomes a lovelorn and cutesy duet.
The song choices are fairly varied and, to give credit where it's due, selecting something like Lennon's 'Imagine' indicates that the producers clearly have only one criteria: that it's a great melody and it fits the scene in the show. No doubt some music fans will find it difficult to reconcile hearing a classic track by their favourite artist with the ultra glossy Glee makeover it's been given here. Yet seen as a showcase for the original artist, this might prove to be an entry point for a new audience to hear their music.
There's nothing on this second disc that even comes close to the towering 'Bust Your Windows' on the first soundtrack but, as a collection of great songs to sing along to this is still very much worth purchasing. Lea Michele and Amber Riley's vocals deserve to be heard.
Not as good as volume 1 March 14, 2010 S. Maguire (Ireland) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
I like the show, I like the cast, and I like most of their song choices. I just feel like Volume 1 was a much stronger album overall, and although there are a few stand-out moments on this one, it just wasn't as good.
The standout songs for me on this were:
Don't stand so close to me/Young Girl
Jump
And I'm telling you I'm not going
Proud Mary.
Amber Riley's version of "And I'm telling you..." is probably one of the best you're likely to hear, her voice sounds fantastic. The cast version of Van Halen's classic "Jump" really works well, although it's no "Dont' Stop Believin'".
The problem I have with volume 2 is that although I think Lea Michele is a seriously talented singer, as are the rest of the cast, their versions of some of the songs are almost copycat - notably "My Life Would Suck Without You" and "Crush". The faux-English accent on Lily Allen's "Smile" is almost cringeworthy.
All in all, a good accompaniment to volume 1, but not strong enough on its own.
whats with the version of imagine? March 21, 2010 N. Corcoran (Liverpool, UK) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Fan of the show, love the music, but why oh why didn't they include the version of imagine shown in the show? It was one of the most moving scenes in the whole show and they've cut it out to include this standard version, not cool!
Really good May 17, 2010 A. L. SANCHEZ (Spain) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is not the same to listen the songs while you are watching the serie on TV, but they have a very good voice.
