This trap is much too weak and too small for a fully-grown grey squirrel. Having bought one and caught nothing in three weeks (although the bait had gone) I was fortunate enough to witness what happened. The squirrel entered the trap and was able to take the bait whilst the door just descended onto his back. When he had finished, he just backed out. Because the door had not been able to go right down, it could not lock. In America, where this trap is made, it is legal just to relocate the animals and so it is designed to use the least force possible on the door spring.
It is, therefore, not surprising that Amazon claim that many people who bought this trap, go on to buy a larger model with a stronger spring (as I have done).

I have been using the trap for about a month and I kept finding it shut but with the bait gone. I then finally saw the squirrel enter it once and the trap closing on its back. It then proceeded to take one of the nuts I had left and back out of the trap. The problem is that it is simply too small for a fully grown squirrel, it is not spring loaded and only relies on gravity to close the trap door. The door then does not lock shut until fully closed. Completely useless for anything bigger than a mouse (though I have once caught a small black bird, believe it or not!).
