Nothing really new, except the "cool" factor November 26, 2005 707 out of 755 found this review helpful
If you're reading this review you must have been intringued also yourself... The question is: What is that? How good is it? How bad is it? Should I buy? I made the jump and spent £20 for this, probably £18 will go to Jamie Oliver, £1 for manufacturing and £1 for paying the awful lot of advertisement about it...Talking about the product... It's basically a portable pestle and mortar, quite light, but way faster as instead of using your hands to grind stuff into it you twist the device like a shaker and a funny little ceramic ball does the job for you, about 20 times faster than what the pestle & mortar world champion could do! The most basic example is: put some rock salt and pepper beans, close the shaker and... let's rock&roll for about 20 secondes. What do you get? Salt & peper mix. One word: useless. Don't waste your money for this. On the other hand, if you're creative about cooking, then this is for you as you'll be able to do new things very quickly and understand if you need to throw away what you've done or not... it's a bit to pestle&mortar what digital is to photography. quality is absolutely not better than before, but it's quicker, ans smaller. a book with a few (very few) recipes comes with the shaker so it gives you ideas. That said £20 is a lot of money for a small plastic shaker with a ceramic ball in it. At £10 it would be a must-have in everybody's kitchen but for the price they put you have to motivated!!! Happy cooking!
Fun while it lasted... May 19, 2006 Phil Naughton (UK) 92 out of 94 found this review helpful
We got given this pukka little gadget a couple of months back. It worked fine for salad dressings and marinades and was a great talking point for guests ("Twenty quid, for that?") After no more a couple of dozen uses the inside of the join is all chipped away where the ceramic ball hits against the thin plastic. Can't risk using it any more cos it leaks and you get plastic pieces in the mixture, so now it's just an ornament. The ceramic ball's still intact though if anyone needs one.
Paying for the name ... December 12, 2005 90 out of 129 found this review helpful
I'm sure they'll be appearing in a lot of xmas stockings this year, but as a previous reviewer said, it's little more than your basic pestle and mortar. What we're paying for with this is the Jamie Oliver branding.Nothing against the man personally, but in my view this product is way too expensive for what you're actually getting.
Utter rubbish, completely useless June 3, 2006 Mack (UK) 69 out of 72 found this review helpful
I'm not a chef- but I do enjoy to dabble at home in the culinary arts. I bought this little gadget expecting it to crush and mix spices, for tikka/indian marinades and other sauces-- comparable to a pestle and mortar. Unfortunately, the device is useless for this purpose. The ball is lightweight (I can't see it crushing more than biscuits; it's only really good for mixing) and the ball just kinda swings around the edges most of the time. The whole unit is a cheaply made rip-off. After spending 20 quid on it, I remember opening the package and thinking "is this it?!". I couldn't believe they were charging this much for essentially two pieces of plastic and a slightly heavier than ping-pong ball. Utter rubbish. I honestly can't see a use for it. It's been in the back of my cupboard for about 5 months; I doubt I'll ever use it again.
