Disappointing July 1, 2008 jenchris40 (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This thermometer is designed to warn you if your fridge or freezer goes above or below the recommended temperatures for food storage. It does this by bleeping and flashing every 5 minutes when it detects a rise or fall in temperature beyond the preset range of +2 to +8 degrees C for a fridge, for example, until such time as the temperature again falls into the desired range. This is what it's supposed to do, and I have to admit that's what it does. However... Pros: Nice to look at, discreet and not in your face. Easily positioned on outside of fridge or freezer cabinet. Only takes one AAA battery. Probe is easy to fix inside the fridge, can be moved around if needed, and is very sensitive to temperature change. Comes preset to standard desireable fridge and freezer temperature range (+2 - +8 C for fridge, for example). Alarm can be turned off in necessary. Cons: Sticks with messy sticky pads and not with a fridge magnet(!) The price for good looks is a tiny display that can't be read from a reasonable distance from the appliance. Alarm is no louder than a good old-fashioned digital watch, so ok if you live in total silence, or in your kitchen or utility room. LED lights are tiny and altho they flash, they can't really be seen on a bright day. The settings on the thermometer cannot be changed at all. This means if you want a narrower range of temperature, eg +4 - +6 C fridge temp for example, you have to make do with what it comes with. Also there's no delay facility on the alarm - it goes off instantly when it records a temp higher or lower than the preset ones. So if you know you're going to open the fridge door and the temp inside may rise for say 10 mins, there is no way to stop the alarm going off and lights flashing, eating up battery power, unless you switch the thing off, which rather defeats the object. Finally, build quality is poor. Looks like metal, feels like plastic, and the battery cover keeps slipping itself open. By and large, I'm inclined to send this back and try another one, altho I did spend a lot of time surfing for options before buying. I'd recommend people steer clear of this one - and be warned, it is sold under many different names, but always looks the same in pics.
