5 out of 5 stars Panasonic DMP-BD30   March 31, 2008

This is my first Blu-ray player and will go alongside a Toshiba EP35 HD-DVD player on a Samsung LE46F86 telly and Onkyo 705 AV receiver.

It is one of the first Profile 1.1 players to be available in the UK, which is why I waited for it. Profile 1.1 means that it will play the Picture-In-Picture commentary that some may be interested in.

The HD picture is excellent, easily on-par with HD-DVD. Cars looked stunning. Spiderman 3 is very good indeed. SD DVDs up-scaled very well, I could not see any difference between an up-scaled DVD played on either the BD30 or the EP35, which is quite an achievement.

TrueHD was available on the discs and sounded fantastic. Note that there is no on-board decoding of the newer codecs (TrueHD, DD+, DTS-HD) so you will need to bitstream to a suitable AV receiver that can decode them.

The BD30 is fast to turn on and fast to load. Put your ear to it and you can hear the faint fan, but you have to have your head against it! There was no detectable noise from the disc mechanism either.

If you are waiting for Profile 2.0 (to connect it to the Internet) or have an older AV receiver and need on-board decoding, then the Panasonic DMP-BD50 may be worth waiting for. But the BD30 is excellent and easily recommended.

After HD-DVD finally went the way of BetaMax, I took the plunge & bought the Panasonic BDP30 player. I was wondering how much better the picture would be than my high-end Marantz DVD upscaler.
The Panasonic is very easy to set-up & the picture plus high-def sound is for the money brilliant. The player is bundled with Cars & Ratatouille blue-ray discs.....the detail in the picture on Cars has to be seen to be believed.
Highly recommended, if you can get your hands on one - I hear that there are only 1000 being imported initially!

I have to say first off that this is a wonderful DVD and blu ray player, on my sony the image and sound is very good and it really is a step up, but, this is still new technology and it does take a few seconds to set up even old DVD's let alone blu ray discs.
If you want full blu ray support then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this player, it is still faster and better quality than many others on the market.
If you just want something to upscale older DVD's then you may be buying something which is slower and less friendly than a five year old DVD player, pays your money and takes your choice really.

The problems sometimes with new technology is that it is difficult to get the information that the buyer needs for his/her own set up.I was bombarded with all kinds of data when choosing my blu ray player. My tv is a Panasonic Viera 42" but was bought just before the HD and HDMI appeared,so i have now get 1080i with the BD30 as opposed to 1080p which the new tv's will play,so i have bought a QED component cable (around 60)and linked this to the BD30 and on its initial plays it is superb. And audio is a Sony Amp which outputs upto DTS and 6.1 to Bose AM10 sattelite speakers.I have no intension of changing the tv just to get that extra 10% of picture quality or changing the Amp for a likewise improvement in audio, there comes a time when the extra outlay is not worth it (for me).Just remember the player is only one part of your system.

Having read all the professional reviews the BD30 was certainly the best player on the market in this price range, and now its up and running i can see why. With the 1.1 profile and an ethernet connection for easier firmware updates it will take some beating at this price.

But always do your own research,so you end up with what is best for you,and not somebody else.

The only problem at the moment is getting hold of a Pan BD 30 which seem to be in short supply.
