Typical good Sony April 13, 2008 Kenneth Baker (WAKEFIELD, West Yorkshire United Kingdom) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
The DVD player was delivered at 11.00am the morning after ordering at 4.00pm. The display spec is a little dissapointing but in reality the picture quality is very good. When using head phones as I usually do , on very quiet passages there is a little motor noise created by the DVD unit but to be honest it does not spoil the usage at all. Photo and MP3 playback are great. As usual Amazon beat all contenders on price. All in all a great buy and the battery on playback is as good as they claim , the best I have had is 5 hours 38 mins to a charge. Ken Baker Wakefield.
Sony vs. Shinco May 24, 2008 Tilted John (Liverpool, UK) 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
As I spend a lot of time on trains, and I'm tired of dragging around a big laptop, I thought I'd buy a portable DVD player. I was initially attracted to the Shinco 7 inch because it's a region-free machine that supposedly plays DivX and MP4 stuff and comes with a pile of goodies -- headphones, carry case, etc. I wish I'd read all of the 40-odd reviews before buying because several said that it struggled with home-burned disks, and DivX/MP4. When mine arrived, it wouldn't read any of them. It would read anything in standard DVD format, but anything outside of that format was unreadable. Also, the picture was rubbish. It looked like the old 625 tv sets, where you could count the lines. And despite its being brushed aluminium, the quality of the finish of the case was nothing to write home about. So, back off to Amazon with that not-fit-for-purpose piece of junk, and a return to my usual first choice when it comes to television/video/dvd/etc. You knows it, claart, it's a Sony. Why buy anything else? Sure, the spec is always slightly conservative on Sony hardware. It's never out on the Bleeding Edge. That's why it's as reliable as it is. And the product oozes quality the moment it arrives. Nice packaging. Beautiful fit and finish. Quiet understated elegance in the product design. I plug it in, switch it on, it starts quietly (in contrast with the Shinco, which sounded like they were turning on the generators at Sellafield), I slip in the disk -- a DVD-RW, with a variety of and DivX, Xvid files, some with subtitles, some without. The disk is immediately recognized. I run through the menu and play one file after another and everything plays without a hiccup. It's a Sony -- its like a Honda insofar as they just do what they say on the tin. They do it well, reliably and repeatedly, with a minimum of fuss. Picture is pixel perfect. No flaws on the screen. This is how all consumer products should be. Pros and cons Pros: - Elegant design - Five hour battery - It just works. Perfectly - Its a Sony. Cons: - No MP4? (Come on, Sony? Give us a break here. I very nearly bought the more expensive Toshiba because that did have MP4 playback.) - No additional tchotckes? No headphones, no carry case, etc - Single region. - No MP4! It's still fairly new so I can't talk to reliability yet, but if its anything like the other Sony products that I've owned, the product lasts longer than its functionality. Twenty years later, you'll be saying, 'Sheesh, if only I'd bought that Mahatmacoati, it would have been dead years ago and I wouldn't still be using this twenty year old Sony portable DVD.' I'd buy another without giving it a moment's thought. Unless Sony introduced a model with MP4 decoding, in which case, I'd buy that one instead. Also, you can save around 30 by going with the white one rather than the pink, the red or the blue.
A great buy at a great price May 31, 2008 David Hambrook (London) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This Sony replaces my 7" Phillips portable. Used primarily by my children and also on flights & holidays, 2 key areas of importance for me are battery life and durability. The Sony ticks both boxes giving a true 5-hour battery life and a sturdy well put together frame made from quality material. I found the image quite detailed, clear and easy to view, sound quality good for the size of the unit and included all the features you would expect on a DVD player Compared to my old unit and other units I looked at, in today's market, even when put against some much more expensive units the Sony still won the day. I'm Sure there are some better units out there but I could not find one at this price point. The unit also features audio & composite video INPUT as well as OUTPUT, 2 x headphone sockets, USB input for memory sticks and card readers as well as a hold button to disable the unit's controls if required. The screen also opens fully flat to the unit (180 deg not 360deg). There is however no S-video or component out/inputs. The thin battery attaches secularly to the bottom of the unit creating a well-proportioned player that does not feel particularly bulky. Charge time from flat can be up to 5 hours with a battery indicator function to tell you how much charge is left. The unit comes with a remote control & a car battery adaptor that plugs in to the cigarette lighter socket. As for formats it will play DVD DVD-RW/-R, DVD+RW/+R, VIDEO CD/MUSIC CD CD-RW/-R, DivX, MP3 and JPEG After extended use I am very pleased with the unit and would happily recommend it as a cost effective 7" portable DVD player
Sony DVPFX720W -- 7" portable DVD player: FAB! June 21, 2008 Mr. Stephen Digance (Auchterarder, Scotland) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I ordered this as a replacement as our previous Toshiba model failed within the 12 month warranty. Being competively priced on Amazon, this Sony model is a wee beauty. Build quality is second to none as you would expect from Sony. The 5 hour battery fits neatly underneath the unit base [unlike other DVD players] and will keep our kids entertained on car or long haul flights. Picture quality is great in all directions, although the speakers are a bit weak on output. Overall, a great portable DVD player.
Nice job June 5, 2008 Rudolf Hucker (Norn Irn) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am just about to head off on a long haul flight and needed something to keep the kids quiet (air canada don't do individual screens). Had looked in the high street but couldn't find anything with a decent battery life for under 100. Then came across this one on amazon for 40 less than what the high street are selling it at. Paid for first class delivery at 4pm and got it the next day (didn't want to risk not having it in time for the hols!) The build quality is top drawer, image nice (7" size not too hard to view) and sound good through headphones. The biggest draw for me is the 5 hour battery life and the external rechargeable battery neatly fits on to the bottom of the machine. Only potential fault is the ipod white finish is likely to scratch but this would show up more if it was black. All in all I am chuffed to bits with it - and the kids like it too. Just wish I could afford to buy two to take with me!
