5 out of 5 stars I love it   June 30, 2006

So easy to use, so nice to look at, so easy to handle. A brilliant bargain, I love it. Radio reception in my house is normally awful, but with this I can pick up 19 stations downstairs and 31 up. I'm a happy bunny. The menu system is very easy to navigate and once you get the basics you'll never need to use the manual again.
Remember to check the availability of signal in your area before buying a DAB radio, or better still borrow a friends, as the availability charts aren't very accurate, it says I can only recieve 7 channels.
Shame the chargepak is so expensive, but worth it if you want to listen away from a mains supply frequently. I bought 6C batteries, and they kept it going for a reasonable amount of time but it would be expensive if i wanted to take it away from mains power.
Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Dont Delay DAB - go for The ONE !   June 9, 2006

I have resisted the temptation to buy DAB since I live in an area where it is very difficult to receive FM and television signals, side of a hill and everything. Also put off by the generally over 100 price tags of decent makes - eg PURE which always gets excellent reviews. When I saw the One advertised I went for it - and I am NOT DISAPPOINTED. It picks up a vast number of stations, all the main BBC ones no trouble, in fact I think only three or four stations in this area can't be received. And the FM reception is vastly superior to any other radios in the house.

This is an attractive radio - I actually have the white one, I think the black one looks a bit cheaply plastic, whereas the white is cool - my daughter preferred the pink one. Huge extending aerial seems the reason for the good station pickup. Good sound, with reasonable bass. ALthough there's only one speaker it picks up stereo and has a stereo headphone jack to plug in your hi-fi if you need it. 20 presets, which you access by pushing the preset button and turning the big dial to choose your favourite - pushing the dial acts like an enter key. You get to choose options for what appears on the display, you can update its software through a USB port (obviously not needed to do this yet) and its even got sleep and wake-up timers on it. A great boys toy...

As I have pointed out, I have never had a DAB radio so can't do a comparison, but the sound and looks are great, its intuitive to use, and the price is a killer for a PURE radio. Excellent. Quibbles? None really, except that if you want to be able to make it portable its looks like the best bet is to buy a chargePAK, which recharges when you plug the radio in the mains and then powers it when you unplug, and they seem expensive to me at thirty quid.

In short - if you've dallied and delayed in dabbling with DAB - this is The ONE - groan...

5 out of 5 stars Proves you don't have to spend a fortune   June 27, 2007

After more years than I care to remember as an FM listener, I decided to venture into the DAB market with the Pure One. My main reasons for choosing this model were firstly the reputation Pure has for making great radios, and secondly the need for something battery powered for use in the bathroom.

Aesthetically you can't go far wrong with the One; in piano black it looks good enough with well laid out controls and a reasonably easy to read display. My preference would be for a slightly larger display as trying to see the clock from anywhere but up close can be a bit of a challenge, but for the price I shouldn't complain. Setting up the One was very straightforward and took no more than a couple of minutes. Of course the number of stations you get, and the quality of reception will depend on your location but I was pleasantly surprised with it's ability to seek out a good selection of stations, some of which the station finder website suggested I might not get for my postcode area.

In use the sound is clear and is an enjoyable listen, even for long periods - like lazing in the bath! Purists might criticize it for lacking a bit of weight and authority but given that this is a 'lightweight' radio with a plastic shell, and costing a lot less than most of the Pure range, I'd say it was good for the price. Battery life is quoted at around 20 hours and I found that a bit optimistic for disposable batteries, so I invested in the rechargeable battery pack and while a little on the pricey side, you'll save in the long run, making it a useful option.

There are other features like alarms, a sleep timer, backlight etc., which all go to making this a worthwhile purchase and if you're in the market for a portable DAB radio at this price point you'd be hard pushed to find anything that sounds or performs better. Definitely recommended.

As with all Pure Dab radios you receive a top quality product and top quality components.
This smart radio weighs remarkably little, you pick it up and you instantly realise digital technology has become centralised around the processor and a few transistors (i know because ive seen inside their more expensive Sonus model)and even though the sound is stunning there is little inside to produce that sound.

This model even though it has only one speaker produces a crisp linear sound and stereo at that maybe because Pure have included a rather impressive telescopic ariel far longer than your usual radios to improve reception.

If then Pure can produce a top quality radio that can receive Stereo broadcast using a single speaker why then do you have to pay 30 extra for a separate stereo speaker the higher up the range model you go.

It also has the function of Fm Stereo transmission for those wanting a Dab radio but cannot yet receive that digital signal .

It has many of the controls it more costly brothers have like one touch automatic tuning,a nifty blue backlit screen telling you what you want to know and more importantly RDS reception for that Fm broadcast.

It is the choice of components that make Pure the current leaders in the DAB market.Even the normal Fm stereo reception is trully firstclass.

Sound, quality of finish and a simply stunning price make this radio a star buy to replace an older model or to introduce yourself to digital radio.

The biggest PLUS for this radio is the combination of Dab Digital and Fm Stereo with Rds for those who as yet cannot pick up digital broadcasts but can have a radio that will entertain you whilst you wait for those transmitters to become available in the near future.

Remember the vast majority of Dab radios are Digital only and cost nearly twice what this little number costs and the big plus is that its available in shocking PINK which is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars It does exactly what it says on the tin!   April 26, 2007

I bought this for my husband for christmas as he had been angling after a DAB radio for months.
I invested in the - what seemed expensive at the time - battery pack too.
I have to say the radio is FABULOUS!
It is light, easy to use, so simple to program and, with its clean lines, not as cheesy looking as many of the other DAB radios available.
I have had no problem with getting a signal at all, anywhere in the house - which is unsual in my house, as it has more solid internal walls than more modern properties. It is great in the garden, too.
I am so glad that I invested in the Li-ion battery pack as well, because it lasts for DAYS, it automatically recharges the next time you plug it in - and you can still listen at the same time as it charges. I keep on thinking of all those batteries I would be using, or having to swap around if I was using rechargeable AAs....

You can tell that, although it was bought for my husband, I have, ummm, borrowed it a few times........
