5 out of 5 stars Small and perfectly formed   September 6, 2006

This is the new model of the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium USB Flash Drive. This 2GB version is the largest capacity model that SanDisk do in the Titanium. It's a bit more expensive than the equivalent sized drive because of the metal housing and flashy design.

It's also being touted as extremely rugged and crush-resistant. I can't tell you whether the claims are true or not, however I can tell you it's been fine being in my pocket all day long attached to my keychain.

The U3 technology works fine. If it's something you don't like, then there is an option to uninstall it from the U3 menu, thereby converting it to a normal, 'no frills' flash drive.

All in all, this is a beautiful little USB flash drive. It looks great, this new model is nice and small, and the capacity is excellent.

The price from Amazon UK is very good. And Amazon are, as usual, a great seller. Well recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A quality flash drive   June 19, 2007

This is an excellent quality flash drive - it is robust, looks good and performs very well. The retractable USB means there is no protective cap to lose, and the titanium body is solid - this flash drive is built to last. The shiny metal looks great, and I like the blue glow of the status light which is positioned underneath the retracting lever. Also included in the package is a clip that can be fitted to the drive, and a strap which clips to the drive.

In a test, I copied a 1.38 GB file to the drive. It had an average write speed of 8.6 MB/s and an average read speed of 16.2 MB/s. This fast read/write speed allows the drive to be used as additional memory by Windows Vista (ReadyBoost), but since I don't have Vista I can't comment on its performance there.

One interesting feature about this drive is the U3 software that is included. It comes with a few programs pre-installed and additional U3 software can be downloaded from the internet, including lots of good free software. It is really cool to be able to use the same software on any computer, aptly described elsewhere as like carrying your operating system with you. A feature here that I find really useful (even essential) is the ability to password-protect the drive - a login box appears when the drive is inserted requesting the password. Only formatting the drive will restore access to it, but then the data is gone.

This flash drive has some brilliant features, and is very professionally built - I would highly recommend this drive.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   August 7, 2007

Seriously, like everyone has said, this little beauty is indestructable. Being a student of Electronic Engineering, I like to test things out, this this time I decided to test out it's physical robustness.

I filled up the stick wth important information, as you do, attached it to the lanyard and gave it to a friend of mine, asking him to break it.

He swung it at a rock solid wooden table several times, dented the table, no damage to the stick, stood on it countless times, that made no difference, he even threw it in the road for cars to run over, nothin more than a few scratches in that beautiful titanium casing.

Plugged it back in, worked a treat. The retractable USB port is a saviour.
Also, if you like U3, there are programs around that let you convert your own little programs into U3 campatible ones so you can use them, read around.

Highly recommended, I just sold mine to raise money for a 4GB one because i ran out of space.

5 out of 5 stars There is nothing wrong with it.   July 10, 2008

There is a few reviews for this product, which are quite misleading, so this is the truth:

Speed: 15 MB/s read, 9 MB/s write - according to the box, and it is quite right, because I have measured 19/10 MBs read/write with a test program (CrystalDiskMark21 - NEC USB port), but during normal usage the speed can be much slower of course. Lots of small files can slow down any device not just this one, and the speed depends on the USB port and the software too.
So this is quick.

Capacity: 8*1000.000.000 Byte. Yes, this is a dirty marketing trick, but it doesn't cause any trouble, if you know about it. I knew about the 7,6 GB capacity, and I thought it was worth, so I bought it. Many firm use this trick, so be cautious if you want to find a "real 8GB" key. Even the DVD's capacity is 4,7*1000.000 Byte (and there is 4,7 GB on the box).

U3: the device asked at the first time, that do I want to remove the U3. So I click yes. The U3 setup files remained on the key. I made a backup, than I deleted all. This was as simple as that.
I think U3 is very useful some people, but not for professionals (and it can cause problems of course). Many programs can be portable even without the U3.

Durability and look: yes you can drive through it (check the YouTube), it looks very sturdy, and I am sure it really is. Otherwise I think an ugly rubberized key is a better choice, if you want to smash it to concrete.
The point is that it is maybe be the most elegant key on the market (I don't like the shape of the cruzer contour), and this is made of real metal (titanium alloy as I know) in a metal-like plastic age.

Retractable USB connector - slide: it is working well. You can easily slide out and slide in with the slide, but the connector can not slide in accidentally (somehow it is locked in place) so you can connect it into the machine with ease (just do not touch the slide while you are connecting it).

and FAT32: as I have read, the NTFS is using the disk more heavily (more write), because it is designed for HDD, but flash drives are not as durable as HDDs yet. There is a way to format it to NTFS with a HP utility, but it is not worth.

5 out of 5 stars In view of all the pompous reviewers.....   August 4, 2008

I am moved to make this post by the negative comments from people who have no sense of perspective or fairness about how to properly leave reviews.
It is very unhelpful, when trying to evaluate a product, to have to read 1* reviews based on the fact that someone doesn't like the clearly advertised FREE U3 software that has been made available or because the drive is only 7.44GB not 8GB. All hard-drives format to less than their nominal size, it's annoying but not a fault only of SanDisk and certainly not enough reason for a 1* review.
The SanDisk Cruzer Titanium is an elegant, strong and excellent value product which has worked faultlessly for me for the last 12 months and on returning to buy another I'm delighted to find that I can now buy an 8GB drive for less that a 2GB drive cost me before.
