Product Description The Coolpix P5100 from Nikon picks up where the Coolpix P5000 left off, integrating a higher resolution and more advanced features while maintaining the comfortable design and feel of its predecessor. The Coolpix P5100 is equipped with a 12 million-pixel sensor and 3.5x Nikkor zoom lens for capturing images in finite detail, while the VR optical vibration reduction system and 3200 ISO sensitivity ensure snaps turn out clear and defined. Meanwhile, the Expeed processor works to improve the camera?s reaction time and enhance photo quality in general. The magnesium casing of the Coolpix P5100 was designed to provide optimum handling, while the practical command keys ? including the quick mode selector ? switch easily between exposure modes (P, S, A and M). There is even a face detection mode to bring out the best in your group photos. This camera also has a real image optical viewfinder and large 2.5? screen for optimum visual comfort as you snap and touch up your photos. The Nikon D-Lighting and red-eye reduction functions even out the lighting and remove red eyes from your shots. The Coolpix P5100 comes with a high-capacity battery (250 photos for one charge) and is compatible with SDHC memory cards. You can also choose from a host of optional accessories and expand the creative possibilities even further! The Coolpix P5100 will be the perfect companion on all your photographic adventures.

Best Compact. October 5, 2007 S. Broadbent (Exeter, Devon) 83 out of 83 found this review helpful
I am a very keen amateur photographer, and usually use a Nikon D200 plus various lenses, tripod etc. However I always like to carry a compact with me every where I go. Preferably one that will fit into my jacket pocket. The Coolpix 5100 is very compact and well designed. It has a metal alloy body and is very well built. 3X times optical zoom and 12 megapixels. Bottom line, Resolution and definition is far better than I expected. You could easily enlarge to movie poster size, the detail is that good. It is surprisingly good at higher ISO's with little noise. 800 ISO is perfectly usuable. Full control including manual, easy menu system and great review screen. Battery life okay but not exceptional ( I bought a Spare and always take that with me.) Optical viewfinder is very useful. You can buy extra lens converters (wide angle and tele) but these are very expensive and not worth it in my opinion The 5100 also has a hotshoe that allows me to attach my SB800 flash, although the built in flash is generally more than adequate. I really like this camera, I own two other compacts (both Canon) and have owned other makes such as the Samsung NV7...YUK! Overall this is the best of the bunch and is so good I can't see me changing it in the near future, I am seriously won over by it. My only complaint is no RAW file facility (JPEG) only. But I am being picky I strongly recommend this camera and feel confident you will not be disappointed. BUY IT NOW!!!
Amazing little camera November 14, 2007 Kevin de Choisy (Somerset, England) 48 out of 49 found this review helpful
There's a huge amount of controversy flying about the net over this camera the main gist of which is why (oh why!) do manufacturers cram more and more pixels into tiny sensors producing very noisy (grainy) images. The P5100 has come in for it's fair share of kicking over this and, to be fair, it does become noisy around 400 ISO and very noisy at higher film speed equivalents but, cast your mind back to the days of film, when did you ever use 800 ISO film!? The main point for me is that at lower iso settings and in most of 'Auto' mode this camera takes absolutely stunning images with real sympathy to colour and tone - unlike the overproduced and lurid results in the Canon equivalents. it's also very easy to hold and navigate and can make you feel like you're a good photographer in minutes. The manual is on the cd of software supplied (Nikon's lip service to the enviroment) but if you contact nikon europe, they can send a hard copy manual. Don't be fooled by the raging comparisons with the Canon G9, this is a different camera, i think better designed. It is slower than the Canons and you might want to choose them if you photo kids and/or sport but, for beautiful imagery this one gets the cigar. 5 stars not because it's 'The Best' but because it does what it does beautifully.
If you know Nikon, you'll know this camera February 1, 2008 D. Redfern (Kent, England) 36 out of 36 found this review helpful
I've had several Nikon SLR's, and one digital camera (Fuji). After a great deal of thinking, I got rid of the Fuji, it annoyingly enhanced almost every shot, making it impossible to capture the mood of the scene. I thought about a DLR - I've used them professionally, but what I really wanted was a good quality pocket camera. The P5100 is it! Feels great, magnesium metal case, rubber grips in the right places, but more importantly, it has a Program,Shutter priority,Aperture priority and Manual dial, exactly the same format as my SLR, I can replicate anything that I can do with my F80. I can capture any mood or lighting situation. The ability to custom set white-balance is also very useful. With 12.5 mpixels, and with an Epsom R800 printer I can make astonishing prints. If, like me, you dithererd over whether to go for a good, small, strong, reliable pocket camera, buy this one.
35mm SLR user seeks superb digital point and shoot with near SLR flexibility.. November 2, 2007 M. de-layen Vian (UK) 31 out of 34 found this review helpful
I have struggled with the digital approach for many reasons but am very content with this compact feature packed treasure. It's not perfect, -slow to capture in-between shots with an average battery life, but other than that it is a 5 star performer and given that in general terms it is photographic ability that a digi camera should be merited, 5 stars is what I have given. Especially when you consider the ability to tack on other lenses and a good quality video capture -- frankly 98% photographers will be more than amply served by this units functionality and feature set. The remaining 2% will have to be spending hundreds maybe thousands to better the performance of this neat little monkey and sporting handbags with hunchbacks... For ref there are many sites that compare this camera to the Canon G9, some favourably, most not. I did a sig amount of research of others' opinions (no professional review as yet) and felt that on mass this camera was the overall best buy. Having taken the plunge I have no regrets, but will reiterate -do not buy this if you are a sports photographer as the time between shots would be prohibitive.
In My Opinion... January 7, 2008 Heavy Drizzle (Scotland) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
Good bits (in no particular order) : Most DSLR features like, P/A/S/M, metering modes, sequence shooting, bracketing etc. One command dial for shutter and aperture, jogging through menus, browsing photos. Panorama assist even makes new folders on the sd card for each sequence. Good macro. Option to set focus to infinity for landscapes etc. Plenty of preset scene modes.(actually seem sensible and I suppose they could save you time some day). Fast start time. OK sequence mode on 12mp..3 shots only and slow. A faster card may be better.Does 3 shots with flash too. Fast on 5mp and will run all day. Plenty more resolution options too.16:9, 1:1. Good ISO options .64 to 400 is good to ok. Can be set to auto but within a preset range. Manual white balance option. Respectable video with sound.640 by 480...1gb = 15 mins. ........ Bad bits: A good flash coupled with an inability to focus in poor light and a focus assist light that might as well be laser pointer if your within 10 feet. High ISO is for mono only. Haven't tried the 3200 iso yet. If you want to split hairs: The extension lenses are about 80 quid each. Looks stupid on the tripod. :) Looks ridiculous with my big Speedlight on it. :) Listing all the good features and nice touches would take all day. The low light focus issue is the only real serious let down. A well priced 12mp compact that is the next best thing to a DSLR, with good looks and good ergonomics. It will fit in your pocket but a slim case will tip the balance and make it a bit too big. It will happily hang around your neck under a t-shirt or jumper all day long. I don't think it's really aimed at the happy snapping party animal but if that's you, this isn't the camera you're looking for. My personal views and opinions. Thanks for reading.
