A++ Digital Camera September 25, 2007 D. Nutty (Midlands, UK) 222 out of 224 found this review helpful
I brought this last week, it arrived quickly and very well packaged, which is good, because of the cost of it. This camera is a big step up from my current one, a Samsung Digimax S500, this is a lot more complex but worth it because I am growing in my photographic skills, but the camera was restraining me, both in terms of zoom and macro shots. Firstly the zoom on this is immense 51x maximum including the digital zoom (which you can turn on and off), even photos taken at this level are pretty good quality. The optical is 10x and very high quality pictures are produced. The macro/super macro are very good and the detail and quality of shots are awe-inspiring. The LCD panel is a big point, it is very clear and runs at either 60 or 30 fps, at the higher setting it is amazing to watch, it's very fluid, but dark shots seem to slow it down (due to the processing going on, I presume) but it doesn't matter because the quality is still top notch, there also is noise on the image in dark shots, but this doesn't actually happen on the photos taken. The EVF (electronic view finder) is a joy to use for shots where you need to use it (not really for bright sun because the LCD is fine there too) but personal preference normally sways decision between either. I don't use the supplied software, because I have no real need to, and I have a SD card reader, so I don't waste battery power transferring the 4mb shots from it to my PC. So I can't comment on that. The software on the camera is amazing, and has comments for when you use it, for example when using the playback to view taken pictures, I pressed it again, thinking it is a toggle button and would go back to photo mode, but it came up saying 'press shutter button to go back to photo taking mode'. It comes up with details about each mode, which is useful when using it for the very first time. It has many, many settings to it, to suit the 'point-and-shoot' users all the way up to pro/semi-pro levels. It comes supplied with a very thick, very comprehensive, manual which shows you how to take pictures, and what the settings, like aperture, actually do, with example photos. The only real niggles I can find are that, when putting the batteries in for the first time, it was a pain to close the battery door, but you get used to that, and the slowdown and noise when taking night/dark shots on the LCD, which doesn't really faze me. It's a very high quality camera, from a fine make and purchased from a top distributer. This camera is perfect for a wide range of users and so highly configurable and powerful that it will take some time to get used to all of its features, especially in full manual mode.
Brilliant Piece of Kit March 13, 2008 K. Wright (UK) 55 out of 55 found this review helpful
Bought this for our last snowboarding trip, primarily for its zoom and video features. Did all it said on the box and more. Brilliant piece of kit; packed with features usually only found on cameras costing a lot more. Shoots quality video, with sound, in up to 2gig segments. Stills are fantastic quality, brilliant colour. Mega zoom. Recommend the Fuji XD cards as they seem to produce the best colour and video flow. The minimum size card for this camera is 2gig if you really want to have fun with it. Shop around for the best price for XD cards - I got a 2gig for 17! If your PC card reader doesn't support XD cards, buy a Yikomi 54-in-1 card reader ( 9.99 from Argos!). The only niggle is that transferring pics/video to your PC by linking the camera to your PC tends to nuke the batteries part way through. Fuji recommend using the AC adapter (not included) to power the camera while transferring. Cheaper and easier to use a card reader. The FinePix software is easy to use. Be warned, though, if you buy the upgrade (from Pixela via the link) for the VCD/DVD-creation software in the bundle, it is temperamental. When it does work, the results are brilliant & the batch processing feature for still-to-video is so much better than having to drag&drop individual frames. Spend some time on the Pixela help page BEFORE unlocking the VCD/DVD upgrade, as mistakes are frustratingly hard to rectify. The camera itself is nice and idiot-proof to use. Good, large, clear screen. The slightly unusual grip is surprisingly ergonomic. Very reliable; top brand. Super value for money.
Great Camera - NO Support March 26, 2008 Mr. J. PALMER (U.K) 42 out of 86 found this review helpful
This is a terrific little camera, but if you buy it here, you are buying from a source in France, and it only comes with FRENCH instructions! I asked Amazon to send me some English instructions, and they were totally disinterested - Despite being willing enough to take the cash, they referred me to Pixmania, (The actual seller) who just gave me a website to download the manual from! I think that the lack of customer service is totally reprehensible, and I am considering returning the goods for a refund. As I started off by saying, it's a very nice bit of gear, but buy it somewhere else. Amazon just don't deserve to have your business.
Great Pictures So Far May 1, 2008 Up 'n' Under (Reading, UK) 33 out of 34 found this review helpful
I bought my camera from http://www.ukcamerastore.co.uk/ and it arrived next working day, with a 170 page instruction manual - IN ENGLISH! I have only had it 3 days now and all my pictures have been taken indoors. It is very easy to setup and picture quality is great with the flash, no red eye so far. I love the zoom on the camera, the 10x Optical is fantastic. My only complaint is that the way I hold the camera, my finger is held over the automatic flash, however, I am learning quickly to get a new grip. Overall very happy with the camera and would recommend it, hope to update when I have taken more pictures with it.
Bargain for the price! April 16, 2008 Robert Howcroft (UK) 28 out of 30 found this review helpful
I've now had this camera for a couple of weeks and have to say it's so far so good. Having owned a couple of smaller Fuji models, I umm-ed and ahh-ed over whether to go for a larger bodied camera or just another small compact that could easily fit in my pocket. In the end, I eventually decided to go for the larger one on the assumption that if I ever want to get more into photography I'd need something with a little more "horse power" than a 3x optical zoom. It'll probably never happen but there's always time left yet. (I've also now bought a Samsung NV8 to take care of my compact needs which I'll review separately). While it feels large next to my compacts, when stood alongside my old 35mm Canon EOS 700 from way back in the early 90's, it's tiny by comparison and it makes you realise just how small gadgets have become over the last two decades. However, although it feels nice and solid, it is still reasonably chunky and heavy and you certainly do have to wear it round your neck which can become rather a drag after a while... The photos I've taken so far are perfectly okay but then again I'm a philistine and will readily admit that I don't have an eye for professional photography. However, neither are most other people and you're almost certainly going to look the part at weddings and parties unless there's a real pro in the house! It doesn't have red eye reduction (which I thought it might when I bought it) but so far I've only managed to take one red eye photo of my daughter who I was beginning to think was borne of the devil judging by my previous cameras! The batteries - I use 2000mh rechargeables - seem to last for ever even with fairly high use of the zoom and my insistence on taking three shots of everything I choose to shoot. If there is to be a negative, it's the small fact that the cable link is yet another non-standard size USB one (I now have three Fuji cameras all with different size cables!) meaning yet another cable to store safely. So while this isn't exactly a review - there are professionals who can do that properly elsewhere - I'll just offer my opinion that this is a very nice camera which I certainly don't regret buying - something you can't always say these days with so much over-hyped, over-priced garbage around. There's definitely room for my skills to grow with this camera and I'd just better get out there and start making use of everything on the S5800 that I'm sure is idly waiting for me there ready to use.
