Product Description The PowerShot G9 is taking over from the legendary PowerShot G7. This superb camera has improved performances and the best Canon technology for even better quality pictures. For example, it has a high-capacity sensor with 12 million effective pixels and a powerful 6x optical zoom. You can take large format shots with the G9 yet still capture the tiniest details in incredible colour, thanks to DIGIC III processing. You don't need to worry about camera shake when you're framing a shot because the G9 has an optical image stabilisation system that compensates for movement and eliminates blur; along with 1600 ISO sensitivity, this system means your pictures turn out sharp and rich in colour, even in low-lighting conditions. The G9 is easy to use, and its design is based on the user-friendliness of traditional cameras. You can adjust the ISO sensitivity settings on this camera, and the LCD screen has been enlarged to 3", allowing you to monitor all your shots before and after taking them. It even has a traditional optical viewfinder. With all this, you'll want to take the PowerShot G9 with you everywhere you go!

The best compact I have ever used October 9, 2007 plato (Saffron Walden) 139 out of 140 found this review helpful
I use professional Nikon DSLRs, and like other people, wanted a small camera I could put in my pocket when I travel light. I travel a lot, and I have bought maybe five or six compact digitals over the last few years, hoping to find one which really filled my need. The Canon G9 looked and felt right as soon as I got it out of the box, and I was just hoping that it's image quality lived up to it's appearance. It does. It is much much better than any other compact I have used. The manual controls are excellent, the handling is very comfortable, and the operation is very well thought-out. I really enjoy using this little camera. The image quality is excellent, if not as good as that of my Nikon DSLRs. I did consider the Nikon P5100 compact (and I have not used one, so it might be superb!), but I decided to go for the Canon based on exhaustive trawling of forums and reviews by people who had used both cameras. It seemed to me that most people thought the image quality on both was good, that the grip on the Nikon was better, and the controls on the Canon were better. The Canon G9 has RAW as well as JPG, which is a big plus. I find that the low-light performance of the G9 is great - it really TRIES to get a decent picture! It will end up a bit grainy (noisy) if the light is really poor, but it does a good job in situations where you would need 3000 quid's worth of DSLR and lens to get a better picture. The build quality is excellent as well - some people have commented that it is a bit heavy, but I find it hefts very comfortably and FEELS like a decent bit of kit. Highly recommended!
Stunning! September 29, 2007 Dr. A. Clark (London, UK) 94 out of 95 found this review helpful
Wow, I am going to have so much fun with my G9! It arrived 24 hours ago and I've barely had it switched off since. My new G9 is a companion to my dSLR; it's going to be great for taking more spontaneous, creative photographs in places where I simply wouldn't take my dSLR & equipment. The first thing you notice when you take the G9 out of the box is its solid contruction. This is a very sturdy, well contructed camera. It's quite heavy (reassuringly so) and is too big to fit into a shirt or trouser pocket, but will easily slip into a jacket pocket. The G9 feels like it will last for years of pretty hardcore use. I've been a Canon user for a few years, so I found the menu system and settings very easy even without reading the manual. If you're new to Canon, you'll see that the manual is very helpful and you'll be up to speed in no time. The shots I've taken so far have been every bit what I hoped for: sharp where I want them to be sharp, with very good colour and contrast. Metering and exposure are mostly spot-on, with or without flash. Noise is a problem at ISO 800 and above, but no more so than with any other digital compact I've used; and with excellent image stabilisation, you can often keep the ISO to 400 or lower even in relatively low light. Focusing is fast and accurate, and I love the Face Detection! I feel like I have much more control over how my images look than I've ever had with a digital compact before; this camera does precisely what you want it to do. But of course, if you're not in the mood for choosing all your own settings, it has some genuinely useful scene modes and automatic settings that do a lot of the hard work for you and still produce very good images. The G9 is aimed at two types of photographer: SLR users who want a more portable alternative; and people who have already got to crips with the manual settings on their P&S camera who want a step-up without all the expense & fuss of lenses and other dSLR accessories. I strongly recommend the PowerShot G9 to both groups of consumers. Now I'm going back to play with mine!
The very best prosumer camera there is September 30, 2007 Stephen Sinclair (London, England) 75 out of 76 found this review helpful
Bought this to replace my beloved Sony DSC H1 which I managed to lose. This is without doubt the most well laid out camera I have had. It is really "usable" and encourages one to take photo after photo. The controls have a logic about them and it's easy to be creative. Manual mode is excellent. RAW image mode (you have to work out how to tell the camera to store them) gives great control and produces better "post production" images. The main drawback is that with such a small sensor using 12.1 million pixels, there is more noise over 400iso than with a DSLR. If this bothers you then stick to DSLR's. But if you have a good noise removal program such as 'Noise Ninja' then this is not such a big problem. The usability factor of this beautifully built, solid, camera, puts it way ahead of the DSLR's in sheer practical usability and enjoyment. It takes great photos and you will not put it down. The bright 3" LCD screen, gains up and down giving a good idea of the final image. The 6*zoom is really adequate considering at 12 megapixels you can double up if you want to using the digital zoom. The image stabilisation works better than my old sony. I've had good results at ridiculously slow speeds. The battery has a very good life too. A real joy.
A Stunning Tool September 17, 2007 J. Haynes (UK) 56 out of 59 found this review helpful
I previously had a G5 as a back up/alternative to my DSLR and would have bought a G7 but, as it didn't do RAW, it was of no use to me. I picked up this camera last Friday and it is totally stunning, metal construction, lovely screen on the back (gorgeous !) and the menu system is good and very logical which is as well because there is no printed user manual. Just a "Quick Start" and a PDF file on the CD which is my only gripe about the 'package',it doesn't save the planet if you have to print it out at home on A4 does it ? I always shoot raw on manual so, I just love the way that the screen lightens and darkens as you change settings, that is really good and gets your attention. If you shoot RAW and use Adobe Photoshop, Bridge and Lightroom, you do need to download the latest Raw update for the first two and update Lightroom to v1.2 to be able to work with the RAW files which would also be true if you bought a Canon D40. Obviously Canon's own software that is supplied with the camera will allow you to see and process the RAW files but its not as capable as Adobe. If you want a small pocket camera for nights out with your mates and/or you prefer to shoot mainly on auto, try an Ixus or equivalent, this is probably not the camera for you. If you are fairly serious about photography and want a high quality camera that is small(ish) so that you can leave the SLR and all the kit at home sometimes, this is for you.
If you see it with yours eyes, this camera will reproduce it! A* December 25, 2007 Mr. Marcus Westlund (wales) 56 out of 60 found this review helpful
When i spend a 100 on something, i do so much research to make sure i am getting the best item, so you can only imagine how much research i did when i was spending 300 on a camera, so please, dont do research, i have done it all for you, if you want a top notch camera, get this one short and sweet, it is head and shoulders above all (apart from the world of SLR), but its as simple as this, SLR's are big and this camera is compact. Now about the camera... PICTURES - Fantastic, clear, focused, extremely quick and a massive step away from point and shoot. You can have the auto setup, and this makes the shooting of photos brilliant and so easy, but there are so many settings, but i will explain later. Someone took a photo from across the room with the zoom and it picked up stubble on my chin ( i just shaved) WOW THE CAMERA - Brilliant. It is extremely well built. Metal casing, massive screen, 3 inches, it like its got a digital photo frame built in and it is really clear. It is so valuable though, i look after like nothing else, i made the mistake, i didnt get a case, if you get the camera, get a case, its worth the extra tenner or so, youll fall in love with it and wont want anything to happen to it. SETTINGS - Well so many, if your an ametuer like me, you wont know where to start, but there are so many, you be playing it for weeks, i promise you that, but i can certainly see why professionals love the freedom, i took a picture in a dark room with no flash, and with messing with certain settings, you can have a picture like its daylight. I certainly havent used RAW before, but now i can appreciate what people mean. RAW gives you more freedom with editing photos, and with the photo being taken with this camera, i can see how it would be such an advantage to have more freedom with editing. There are so many settings, you wont know where to begin, but there is the auto setting, which means, basically it a fantastic point and shoot in this mode. MOVIE MODE - Bascially is is a camcorder, the quality is so smooth and the sound recording is excellent, so no need for a cmacorder in todays world. SPEED - Its not a SLR. An SLR means basically the amount of photos you can take is merely limited to the amount of time you can press the button, and this camera isnt that, but it is quick. I mean really quick, please dont worry about the speed of the camera, i thought i was going to be a bit disappointed because i want SLR speed in a small camera, but this camera is so fast, it doesnt become a problem, unless of course you need a million shots in couple of seconds to see who won the hundred meteres. I took a photo of a car moving at 40mph, its like its parked in the middle of the road, the wheels are still, not blurry, again WOW COMPARED TO POINT AND SHOOT - Well, this can be a point and shoot, especially in auto mode, but i urge you not to buy this for the sake of buying it for a point and shoot camera. There are plenty of good p&S out there. My research shows the sony cybershot w90 is the best 100 camera, without a doubt, but you wont go wrong with the CANON ASUS 950 at a about 170. It has the same sort of quality of this camera, without all the settings, and is half the price so it was seriousely considered by me. I want the freedom to learn about photography and this camera gives me the choice. EXTRAS - you get a 32mb card but this is only really for the user to enjoy a couple of photos upon purchase. I recommend a 4gbsdhc class 4 card, class 6 if you can afford it, the class is the transfer rate between the card and the pc, it means nothing in terms of quality of storage, so if you dont mind waiting when transferring photos, then class 2 is fine, the class MAKES no difference when the camera is using the card, despite what others say. The battery is good for a day of photography, but not much more, so be prepared. You get usb leads , cds, booklets and the rest. The camera has a timelapse mode and other cool stuff (in the settings), but you soon get bored of this. The camera is here for the photos and this is where it excels. CONCLUSSION - If you buy this camera, you have just bought a great camera, the 6x zoom is fantastic and quick, if you see it with your eyes, this camera will reproduce what you see, no problem whatsoever. It is fantastic, dont worry about other cameras, YOU WILL NOT GO WRONG with this. 300 is a lot in todays market of cheap good quality cameras, but i still do not regret spending every penny on it, it in a different class. Ever miss a sunset, or a mountian range because of your point and shoot not living up to the quality you wanted it to, well if you get this camera, no more of that. Professional photos with a fantastic camera. its as simple as that, i love this camera, IT IS SUPERB!!!
