Try a superb camera, not the manual October 25, 2007 DPR (Cheshire, UK) 99 out of 101 found this review helpful
Previously I owned a Fuji S7000 which produces stunning results. The S8000 has most of the 'wants' I had of the 7000 incorporated. The 18x zoom is tremendous, the stabiliser is great, 8MP are very useful, intelligent flash really shows you what can be done. Add to that superb optics, red eye reduction, face recognition and you have a very competitive camera. Not quite a D-SLR, but you get more than enough telephoto without the need of lens changing and the attendant risk of dust on the CCD. The camera is fairly light but well balanced. Controls are placed well, although you must become adept at reading the menus -which have replaced a lot of the buttons on the S7000 - which are many and function dependent. If you want high quality TV style movies get a camcorder, otherwise use the very successful 640 x 480 movie mode on this 'still' camera. Finally, after a total of 71 test photos and 20 prints I can safely say the photo quality is up to Fuji's usual excellent standard. I would recommend it highly for an amateur using the 'auto' mode as well as a competent photographer capable of using its potential to the full. A very good buy (particularly at this price) DPR
Do not buy this camera for the zoom February 20, 2008 Patc (Blackpool,England) 81 out of 85 found this review helpful
Having previously owned a Fuji S5500 and my wife having an S5600, I was keen with anticipation to replace my broken S5500 with the new super zoom Fuji model, especially, as I spend alot of time photographing wildlife and particularly birds. My excitment soon turned to dismay as no matter what I did with this camera, the quality of image produced at the full range of the zoom was simply shocking. I took the camera back to the retailer and asked that it be tested against the Panasonic & Olympus models as the store agreed that the images were very grainy and that purple fringing was an issue. On the plus side, landscape , portrait & macro shots are all very good Eventually, we agreed a swap with the Panasonic DMC FZ18. There's simply no comparison. If you want an 18 x zoom camera, pay a little extra for the Panasonic and don't waste your money on this.
Very impressed March 3, 2008 Dr. F. McPhie (Inverness, UK) 64 out of 64 found this review helpful
I've just come back from a safari trip to Tanzania and I am VERY impressed with this camera. I've got fantastic shots using the zoom at it's full, impressive 18x with no tripod and am really pleased with it's performance. Colour, quality etc. are all great - I'm still getting to grips with the many settings, but I bought this hoping that it would be a step up from a compact whilst not demanding the know-how of a D-SLR and that's exactly what it is.
Zooming Marvelous October 28, 2007 Mrs. Karen Lovell (Worthing, West Sussex United Kingdom) 50 out of 52 found this review helpful
This camera is very good beginner to enthusiast piece of kit. It has one of the largest compact zooms currently available, and picture quality using the zoom at full strength and throughout the zooming range is very accurate. Overall, picture quality is very good when using most settings other than AUTO. With this setting I noticed poorer results of image quality than using my old S5600 on AUTO. There are a vast array of user features you just haven't been able to get before with Fuji Cameras in this price range. This is a very nice camera that will reward you well if you spend some time learning how to customise the user settings other than just using AUTO all the time. BE AWARE THAT THIS CAMERA DOES NOT HAVE THE 'SUPER CCD HR' LENS. A number of sites, including pixmania are wrongly advertising that this model has!
Video mode: the small print in the manual October 5, 2007 Mr. Alan Hamilton (UK) 47 out of 73 found this review helpful
I have the S6500FD and was looking forward to S8000FD. From the stills point of view it looks very capable and the reviews shows that the CCD gives good results even up to ISO 800. The CCD image stabilisation, greater zoom range with some more mega pixels may have tempted me. However as I also like to catch the odd video, one of the things I could really have done with on the S6500FD is also missing in the S8000FD. That is image stabilisation, it is not available in video mode (manual p32 and 106). The other major drawback in video mode, is that the zoom is not available during recording. You have to set the zoom before you start recording ( Manual p106). This seems to be a stopgap camera, Fuji have been behind when it comes to image stabilisation. The aspect ratios are also limited on video unlike the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18EB, however that camera does not seem to have such a good CCD as the Fuji. I think I will wait until Fuji produce a camera like the S8000FD with a better video mode (and hopefully in black). It would also be nice to have that option of a manual zoom but with trends towards full automation it will not be long before the camera comes with wheels and a remote control so you do not even have to leave your armchair. (Note the manual I referred to was downloaded off the Fujifilm web site on 04 Oct 2007)
