Product Description Canon has completed its Digital IXUS range with the 950 IS, an ultra-compact digital camera with a sleek design and 8 megapixel CCD sensor. Thats 1 full megapixel more than its predecessor, the IXUS 850!This camera combines an optical image stabiliser and DIGIC III image processor to improve focusing, colours and visual rendering. You can be sure of what youre shooting and centre your focus around a particular object or face, using the 2.5" LCD screen. This Canon camera features a face detection mode for photos with even lighting and reduced shadows. The IXUS 950 IS has ISO sensitivity of up to 1600 to adapt to any environment. It also includes Canons own My Colours mode, which eliminates red eyes and adds special photo effects, such as saturation, neutral, softened, sepia and black and white. Finally, for the amateur film director in all of us, the IXUS 950 IS can even record short videos!

Canon Ixus 950 IS June 23, 2007 rocco (UK) 82 out of 83 found this review helpful
I had previously owned the Canon Ixus 700 and regrettably sold it to satisfy my desire for the latest and greatest. Anyway, after a Sony Cybershot and a Leica D-Lux 3 I have found myself back with the Canon Ixus. The 950, like it's predecessors, is beautifully small and well crafted. It oozes quality and looks and feels great and is so simple to use. Ok, it's functions may not satisfy the serious enthusiasts out there but for all you amateurs like me it's got some great features and takes wonderfully vivid shots. There is a really cool time lapse video setting. I sat the camera on my tv for 20mins and hit the record button. The result was hilarious. I'm not sure of any other cameras that have that function. The only negatives for me are that again, Canon have chosen to inculde a naff 32mb SD card??? I mean, howay, you can get a 1GB card for a few pounds now. Also, the power button is a bit fiddly if you've got turkey drummer fingers like me!! If I had to score this camera out of 10, I would give it 9.5!
A great little compact October 10, 2007 DamianR (uk) 61 out of 61 found this review helpful
I read all the reviews here good and not so good before deciding to go for this camera as my 'keep in my pocket' alternative to my lovely Canon 300D. It was a great price on Amazon. I have to say I'm in love with this camera! It oozes quality. It takes great pics, both with and without flash. Good points: Great feel and build quality with good pocketable size. 4 x optical zoom superb flash - great for wide shots right down to macro. large, sharp lcd viewfinder optical viewfinder - still useful and sadly omitted from most these days. superb image stabilizer - great when on the extreme of the 4x zoom. lovely colour rendition and great detail in images intuitive operation - really easy to use. great video quality good battery life Bad points: Connector flap is sometimes troublesome to shut properly. All in all, I'd recommend this camera to anyone - I can't fault it!
Great pocket substitute for an SLR August 29, 2007 Mel (London) 47 out of 47 found this review helpful
I bought the Ixus 950 IS as its now so difficult to travel abroad with my digital SLR (one hand bag and all). I was especially attracted by the image stabilisation as camera shake was a big problem on my old Sony compact. c.500 shots later I'm really impressed, in the right conditions (good light, outdoors) picture quality really can rival my EOS 350. A word of warning on battery - for some strange reason there doesn't seem to be a battery life indicator and I have been caught out with a flat battery twice. Battery life is good and it charges quickly, but if you are shooting a lot of pictures in a day get one or more spare batteries. This is a bit annoying as it was bought to be compact you then have to carry around a spare battery pack as well, which doesn't fit in the case. But overall a good solid compact and at the current price an absolute bargain!
Shaky Hands? Not a problem anymore. July 26, 2007 John Mclaren (Scotland) 45 out of 46 found this review helpful
I wanted a small pocketable camera to take with me at all times to supplement my SLR-shaped Canon Powershot Pro 1 which I never take on holiday because of its bulk. Having a pretty constant hand tremor now in my advancing years, using my wife's little Sony was always a hit or a miss affair, especially at lower shutter speeds or telephoto settings. I've just returned from a holiday with 240 pictures and video clips and the results are simply first class. Picture quality is pretty well equal to that of the Powershot Pro 1, especially where colour fringing is concerned. Video quality I found to be better than that of the Sony, till I realized the Ixus was set to 320 pixels wide and the Sony 640! For me, with my problem, the image stabilization is a revelation. Whoever invented it deserves a very big pat on the back from me. No longer am I limited to wide angle only or fast shutter speeds. I can use the full 140mm equivalent telephoto with only a little care and obtain sharp results which were impossible before and obtain, in other situations, discreet, available light photos better than those "headlight effect" ones you get with flash. In the right conditions I have obtained sharp results shooting at one quarter of a second! Awesome, as my daughter would say. Picture quality is entirely acceptable up to about ISO 200, beyond that you'd have to be pretty desperate for that photo, but then they're all like that aren't they? Outdoors I tend to set it to M(anual) and fix the speed at ISO 80 for maximum quality, reverting to A(utomatic) in more difficult conditions. Why pay for such a quality lens then destroy it by using high ISO speeds. The flash is OK, not that powerful but fine for small groups indoors. Have just tried the inbuilt red-eye correction on a photo of my grandson and that worked perfectly too. But I had to search through all my photos to find one which did have red-eye in the first place, which must tell us something. Battery life gave no problems. Strangely there is no indication of battery state of charge so it's advisable to top-up the charge daily. A strange ommission. The on/off button that I've seen criticisms of is fine. It works if you use your index finger to operate it and is pretty well protected by its location from accidental switching on in your pocket. Once or twice the battery compartment door has been slightly moved causing strange things to happen but after the first time you know what's wrong. Not a problem. Overall then a very good camera indeed which I have no regrets about buying and would heartily recommend to anyone looking for quality in a small package.

Only owned for 1 week, but so far, superb results. As a 350D SLR user - both 8 Mega Pix. - obviously not quite as sharp. but IS often compensates! Colour, auto exposure and contrast are probably superior. Beautifully built and easy to use menus. Screen much better than 350d. IS works well as does Face detection. Start up fast as is capture. Very, very impressed. Confess to buying mine in Hong Kong. 170 inc. 2 gig card, spare battery, case and mini tripod. Sorry Amazon, but even you can't compete!
