Great images in small stylish package May 11, 2007 Martha's Dad (Leics, UK) 186 out of 190 found this review helpful
As many other reviewers, I researched the web for hours when choosing a digi-camera and I am more than satisfied with The Canon Ixus 70.
Tips for buyers
1. Buy a 2gb SD card - Sandisk seem to be good quality and well priced. This takes the Photo capacity upto 1000 in certain modes plus 15minutes of video. Beware very cheap SD cards - my images were too precious to risk being lost to corrupt cards! 2. The Ixus 70 is the highest Megapixel Canon model ( 7 mp ) with a viewfinder. This is really useful to preserve battery life if you are just snapping. Other models in the Ixus range only use the screen as the viewfinder, which can drain battery life. 3. Buy a case. Th camera doesn't come with a case. I would recommend trying to find one which can also hold extra SD cards/battery.
Very impressed with this product, works stright out of the box and for once (!) the bundled software (zoombrowser ex) is a very inutitive photo storage software package. HIghly recommended.
Nothing better for less than 150 July 16, 2007 A. Ogden (Leeds, UK) 141 out of 145 found this review helpful
My goodness Canon know how to make cameras. The first thing you notice when you take the camera out of the box is the build quality. It is absolutely superb. It feels very solid, buttons and switches are clearly built to last and it sits so well in your hand.
I bought this camera for my wife and the requirements were: Small enough to slip into a handbag/pocket, built-in viewfinder, good quality pictures, good indoor (flash) pictures, simple to use, nice to look at!
The Ixus 70 ticks all of these boxes and more. As one reviewer stated, this is the highest megapixel camera with a viewfinder and if you enjoy using the viewfinder to take pics, this is the only camera you should consider in this price range.
The picture quality is just stunning. We took a few shots of the recent storms and the level of detail the camera picks up is great. I don't particularly like using a flash and have taken most of our pictures without the flash enabled. The camera performs very well on this setting and can handle some quite poor lighting conditions admirably.
It doesn't do the camera justice to call it a "point and shoot" handbag camera but if this is what you are after, then save yourself the extra for the udpated models and buy this one with a 2 GB memory card to go with it.
The menu system is very straightforward and the camera is incredibly quick. This includes start-up time when you switch on, and time taken to take pictures.
Connecting to the computer - we connect to our MacBook via USB and the Mac detects the camera automatically and downloads the pictures into iPhoto. Works like a dream!
You will not be disappointed with this camera for less than 150.
Only recommendations I would make are to buy a soft case and a 1 or 2 GB memory card. Make sure you spend a little more on your memory card than just going for the cheapest. Your pictures are worth the investment. Budget memory cards are more likely to become corrupt and result in the loss of your pics. I went for the SanDisk SD 1 GB EXTREME III.
Easy to use, great pictures April 10, 2007 BTL (Edinburgh) 73 out of 78 found this review helpful
I bought this camera recently, and find it really easy to use and with great results. It didn't take long to be up and running (without reading a lengthy manual) to access the more advanced features. One small gripe is taking photos at night, without a flash. The camera is a little too smart and tries to lock on to the brightest light in the image, resulting in dark photos (with some interesting results). I know I could read the manual to figure out how to fix this, so it gets 5 stars from me.
The Ixus you always remembered.... July 24, 2007 B. Holmes (London) 70 out of 77 found this review helpful
So - a confession. I have an Ixus APS camera (that's film, kids - ask your parents) - it's the original that Canon based this one on. I bought the Ixus 70 for one reason: my film Ixus still works and looks like new 10 years on. I have had a few digital cameras over the last few years. Why? All of them have broken. All had plastic bodies, flimsy switches, and did not last everyday use - especially now I have young children. All of these cameras were big brands - Olympus, Panasonic, Casio.
Now, you can protect any camera with a case, but you have a compact camera like this so you can slip it in and out of your pocket and take snaps. This shiny metal box slides in and out of the pocket easily, no snagging, and starts up in a fraction of a second. Pictures are always better than I expect (well, it is a Canon - you know, a proper camera company) and video is excellent. It even has some really cutting edge stuff like the face recognition tech that makes sure people are in focus.
It fulfils all of the brief of the original Ixus: Stylish (oh yes - everyone who has seen mine wants one), easy to use and above all BULLETPROOF.
Great camera August 17, 2007 B. Wimsett 55 out of 57 found this review helpful
My Nikon Coolpix bought a few years ago stopped downloading so I surfed the Net for another. I wanted one with a view finder and small enough to go in my pocket. I read the reviews here and ordered one and the reviews are dead right. It's a quality product that's easy to use and takes great pictures. On the Coolpix you couldn't see the preview screen in moderate sunlight which is why I wanted one with a viewfinder but I needn't have bothered as the Canon screen is visible in bright sunlight but the viewfinder does underline the quality of this little camera.
