5 out of 5 stars Neat little thing   June 25, 2007

My advice to the reviewer below was to read the manual properly. The on button is also the play button - so you can turn the camera on for display without actually needing to slide the case.

I am not a pro photographer by any chance but I do love my fuji camera(s). My first one was an E550 which is an excellent thing and certainly very impressed with the quality of picture and it's easiness of usage. I was so impressed with Fuji - I had a look at Pentax and Olympus and with the exception of a Canon (it's too dear!), that I decided to get another Fuji. I am not into taking super-duper photo (and if I do I would be looking to spend more than 200 quid + accesories) so this tiny thing would suffice. I wanted a camera which is small to slip into my bag unnoticeable which takes good quality pictures and easily rechargeable.

I got this camera for about a week now and truly am impressed with the quality produced for such a small thing. It's no suprise it won the TIPA 2007 Award for Best Ultra Compact Digital camera.

I won't pretend to know what's what about digital photography. But I know what's a good picture and what's a bad picture. By golly, it takes superb pictures!

My sole purpose of getting this camera are:

decent quality picture (tick)
small size (tick),
easy interface on the camera (tick)
reasonable battery lifespan (tick)
easily rechargeable (tick)
straightforward connection via USB to the computer minus the software programming and easily transferable (quadraple tick!)
light and compact (tick)
huge LCD screen (tick)
protected lens (tick)
price (double tick)
user-friendly (tick)
On top of that this little thing also offer face detection intelligent (which works!!) and intelligent flash system which makes the picture looks fantastic as if in natural light without making things look as if there's a bright being focusing on the object! (ok perhaps I have left the digital scene for a long time as most camera in this range probably offer the same thing!)

So, the aim of this camera originally was for girlies who are out clubbing so that they can slip it in their handbag whilst going out truly achieve it's purpose and definitley more. Certainly I would recommend this product if you, like me, looking for the above needs.

To fully utilise the camera potential, I would suggest reading the manual from cover to cover and try and test as I don't think you will fully unlocked it's potential if you just click and go even though it presents itself that way. Do check the fuji website so you can have a look and compare the photos this thing takes - you'll be amazed as it's not just a pretty face!

Enjoy!

A few reminders: It uses an XD memory card which goes up to 2GB and not the standard SD cards so you may need to get a different memory card if you were to purchase the camera. I could use my XD in E550 in this camera with no problems. If you have bigger hands, just be carefuly with the lens as it is placed on the far top left corner which can easily be obscured by a finger. On a lower/less light, the image may be grainier looking on the LCD (but nothing wrong when transferred to the computer) but that's common with most cameras and has no effect to picture quality.

4 out of 5 stars All the quality of a 'standard' size camera and more.   July 12, 2007

I've been using this camera for a couple of weeks now, coupled with a 2gb xD card. I have to say, I'm mostly impressed with the camera. The image quality is near perfect at the default resolution (which is extremely high) the 6 Megapixel quality give it the 'wow factor' after you've taken a nice close up and you can see every flaw and blemish (not always a good thing!).

Image quality.
Like I've said above, the image quality is near perfect and will surprise you for such a small camera. Image compression is good and of a high quality.

Shoot modes.
To put it bluntly, there's a *lot* of them, sometimes to the point where you wish there were less, some of them don't seem to make much difference or are VERY situational. Macro mode (for close ups) seems to have a couple of focusing flaws, such as focusing on the foreground rather than what is in the center of the screen, even if it takes up 90% of the LCD screen. Auto mode is great for general photo taking and mostly focuses exactly how you would expect it to.

Ease of use.
This camera is a real gem when it comes to accessibility and I was flying around the menus and options in a couple of minutes without any problems. The LCD screen is perhaps too close to the edges, to the point where you always seem to pick it up by that edge and smudge the screen, because of this, I recommend a screen protector of some kind. For people with bigger than average hands, like myself, don't be put off, the buttons on the camera are perfectly placed and I have no problems at all.

Pros.
Good quality image capture
Built in video capture (around 30 minutes at max resolution on a 2gb card)
Clever menu layout
6 mega pixels
Pocket size

Cons.
xD cards are expensive
No protection or bag 'out of the box'
Focus issues with some shooting modes

Final Thought.
Excellent camera for the price. Excellent quality, the minor problems listed are niggles at best, but niggles none the less.

This is an awesome little camera.

First off, it looks stunning. It's a really neat, modern design and one of the few cameras on the market that makes people stop and say "Wow!"

Secondly, it's very easy to use and get used to, and unlike what some other review states, you can look at photos without sliding the lens cover. The screen is pin-sharp and even has a sort of "bright boost" button for when you are looking at the screen in harsh sunlight. The camera as a whole feels very strong and well put together.

Thirdly, and most importantly, it takes excellent pictures. They are really sharp and the face detection feature really works - it's not just a gimmick. The ISO 1600 is also superb. Since I started using it I have been taking tons more pictures in the evening or indoors.

Overall, this is the best camera I've ever used. Buy it.

Camera and memory card arrived as stated, all in good nick.
Very impressed. How do they get so many features into such a small case?
LCD clear and crisp. Controls fall easily to hand and the manuals supplied are easy to follow. The 'quick start' sheet is a brilliant idea.
So, it's a 'girly' camera and slightly, very slightly, awkward for big mitt's, but I got it for my wife and speaking as a 'happy-snapper' ...... EXCELLENT!

I have owned this camera for just under a week. I have very little experience of photography but wanted to learn, partly because I like to paint and thought I could gather myself some inspiring material. I have to say that this camera and the accompanying software is absolutely fantastic. I have been happily taking pictures of pets, landscapes, wildlife and even text! The image quality has been astounding - I can't believe that I've actually taken these photos!!! Everything seems easy to learn, is very well organised, and is set out in a way that encourages the user, even a very inexperienced user like me!! I feel motivated to experiment knowing that I have the back-up of first rate technology.

I have had no problems whatsoever with the software nor the camera itself. I am absolutely delighted and would highly recommend this product.
