Great printer December 26, 2007 D. Dickinson 140 out of 140 found this review helpful
I purchased this printer for a variety of printing from basic letters to photos and it's been a breath of fresh air since the last two (disappointing) Epson ink jet printers I have owned. I have a very simple desire when it comes to home computing - I just want it to work. The Canon has done just that. It doesn't jam, it doesn't drink ink, it doesn't move the ink head around for no reason - all things that my previous Epson printers seemed to do. Print quality is great (although I've only printed 6x4 photos so far), ink usage seems fair and it's very quiet. The only downside that I can think of is that it is pretty big but at this price, it's a very minor moan and I'd rather have the larger printer if it means it will continue to be as robust as this one. All in all, the best ink jet printer I have owned in years and I am really pleased to have made the jump to Canon.
Great printer so far... November 12, 2007 Muffy (UK) 109 out of 110 found this review helpful
I have had 2 photo priters in the past, both from Epson. Both suffered the same problem, ie they would print good pictures once the ink was flowing but 50% of the expensive ink was wasted in head cleaning. I rather belatedly decided not to make the same mistake a third time (twice is silly, but 3 times would be pathetic) and only looked at printers from HP and Canon. The reviews for the ip4300 were very good, and the ip4500 is basically an updated version of that and at roughly the same great price. Initial impression was that it is very stylish and shiny if a little large. I don't usually bother reading instructions, but with this one I had to and setup is pretty easy if you follow them. The first prints I got were superb even using all the default settings and not the best paper. The colours were accurate and printing was very fast compared to my previous printers. Having the 2 paper trays allows me to have plain and photo paper permanently loaded which I know saves me time faffing around swapping paper. I haven't used the CD printer yet because I don't have any printable disks, but its a nice feature which I expect to use it when I do get some suitable media. The standard ink cartridges seem to be expensive, but I see it's possible to buy cheaper replacements. It appears to be economical with the ink too. With my Epsons the displayed ink level visibly moved downwards with each print, but this Canon's ink level hasn't moved yet after quite a number of 4x6 prints. Having no USB A/B cable supplied is a little mean but I already had several spare ones. So far I can't fault it.
Amazing Amazon, Amazing Printer. December 11, 2007 pHazeD (Northampton, England) 88 out of 89 found this review helpful
I bought this printer to replace my Epson Stylus 830 which needed head cleaning almost every time I used it and, strangely enough I started looking for an Epson replacement but was put off by some of the comments about ink not drying on non-Epson photo paper. The Canon iP4500 with 9600 dpi & CD/DVD printing seemed to tick all the boxes and for the price I couldn't go wrong. Delivery was free and fast as I've come to expect from Amazon. After struggling for a week I realised there must be a problem with the CD printing & emailed Amazon to report the fault. A replacement was sent 2 days later! And I had 30 days to return the other one. And they refunded my postage! Quite right I hear you say but this was not my experience with another online retailer based in France who ignored my 5 emails, 8 'phone calls & held on to my money for 3 weeks even after agreeing a refund. About the printer, excellent print quality even on plain paper & CDs and very fast. There's more print options than my Epson with standard presets easy to access on my Mac, it's quiet and looks smart. It is bigger & heavier than I expected & it took me a while to figure out that the strange red flashes I could see from the corner of my eye were a reflection from my optical mouse off the glossy back surface. The individual ink cartridges don't come cheap and there may not be that many pro features but for the price? I'm sure if this quality printer was available 4 years ago when I bought the Epson it would have cost around 250 which is about what you would have to pay now for a few extra features which I probably would never use. If you want a good, solid printer & print quality is more important than scanning & copying facilities this could be the best option from the best online retailer I know.
Very Impressed - stunning results January 12, 2008 J. HUDSON (UK) 76 out of 77 found this review helpful
Really impressed with this printer. Easy start set up sheet does not give very clear instructions but managed okay, found much better instructions on CD later on. Just printed off my first photo and is every bit as good as a photo shop - then found out that I had not even used photo printing settings!! I like the software included which allows basic editing such as red eye, colour adjustments, cropping etc to be done alongside altering the printer settings & choosing the print quality etc - makes it an easy & quick all in one process. Good looking printer, but it is not small so check dimensions if size is critical. I like the front loading cassette where you can put everyday paper, saves paper flopping about, getting dusty. Used rear (top) feed for photo paper, fed through very smoothly and straight. Highly recommended. Chose Canon as I am impressed with their cameras, and I have never been impressed with Epsom or Lexmark printers in the past. Glad I did.
I've fallen in love with printing again January 6, 2008 skb17 (UK) 65 out of 66 found this review helpful
I remember when I first got a printer, the joy of being able to print anything off at a whim. But in recent years that early joy of printing was replaced with frustration. I had an Epson, a loud clunky thing. Admittedly I never treated it very well (unofficial inks), and it wasn't the most expensive printer in the world. But that thing drove me mad, and ended up in the bin recently after it refused to feed the paper in. I wasn't sure what to go... aim for cheap again, aim for something better? Well I decided to go a bit better, and got the ip 4500. I'm so glad I did. I have found the joy of printing all over again. All the pictures I've been taking over the years are now being churned out and being given to family. I'm printing out pictures for the wall, or for the hell of it. The print quality of this printer is fantastic, and I can't see the difference between its output and a professional photo print. The borderless printing is a great bonus too. The paper cassette is brilliant. Paper used to sit in my printer and curl, and fall out. Not now. It sits neatly in a tray, and I can just print things at ease and out they pop. While it's doing so I can be loading the rear tray with an envelope, and then churn that out too. I've caught up on so many odd jobs thanks to its ease of use, and not having to fight to get my printer to work as I had do with the Epson. Also cool is the double-sided printing. It takes paper from the cassette, prints, takes it back in and does the other side. Effortless ease, and one of those features that I never realized I'd want until I started to use it today. It's also quieter than my Epson too, which is nice! There are a couple of small grumbles. Why no USB lead? They can be bought on eBay for 1, yet Canon is mean enough not to supply one. Why rob customers of the instant joy of using their new product? Similarly Canon could have included some free paper samples. They push the cheesy slogan "Can I bring my ideas to life?" Yes, after you go out and buy more stuff is the answer. But really, those are tiny grumbles. The main thing is the printer, and the printer is fantastic at a fantastic price. I heartily recommend it for anyone that wants to print off fantastic photos, but also to have great business-like functions if you type letters, print envelopes and the like.
