Product Description Apple?s legendary iPod range has been extended to include the iPod classic for even more musical possibilities. Following on from the fifth generation iPod, the iPod classic has all the same functions as its predecessor, but has an improved interface that's easier to use. In keeping with the iPod tradition, the iPod classic has both audio and video functions, in addition to a very large storage capacity and unprecedented battery life, packed into a stylish, 100% metal case. Its 80 GB memory holds up to 20,000 music tracks, and the interface now features the Cover Flow function, which displays all the album covers of each music track on the 2.5" LCD screen, making it very easy to flip through your entire library. Of course, the iPod classic can also play Podcasts, audio books and video games (available for download from the iTunes Store). Finally, the slimline and lightweight iPod classic has an unbelievable 30 hours of battery life when it's fully charged (in music mode)! The iPod classic is sure to sweep you off your feet!

Not perfect but close. September 27, 2007 trueoriginal (UK) 106 out of 113 found this review helpful
For a long time I'd steered clear from iPods due mainly to their once limited battery life. A few years ago I opted for a 20GB Sony Walkman which served its purpose well and which is still currently going strong (if a little scuffed and sorry looking now). I decided that having just topped 40GB of music it was time for something more up to date with a bit more beef. Having been impressed by the Sony player last time (mainly due to the long battery life and excellent sound quality) I was dismayed to find their range looking relatively mediocre and more and more interested in their small capacity players. I went for the Classic for a number of reasons, mainly: *Apple have finally properly extended the battery life (even if it only just longer than the walkman I bought years ago). I'm yet to try the reported 5hrs of video playback but it sounds great. *Though efficient and with practical menus, my last player was just plain boring when it came to the UI. The iPod has always had that wow factor and I'd found using them makes searching for your music almost as satisfying as actually listening to it. *The massive capacity for the price. I was amazed to see Apple marketing a product like this at only just a mark above the 5G price. People rightly moan that Apple is profiteering with hesitance ot supply periferals as standard but at least they've resisted pricing this iPod higher, at a price people most likely would have paid anyway. I received the Classic this morning, albeit 9days after ordering. The unboxing is great with the smart looking packaging and the unit immediately on display when the cover comes up. So far everything is working beautifully. I've never eally used iTunes on my laptop because I like something without the whole catalogging malarky but after having suffered under SonicStage that Sony persist with iTunes is a dream come true. Some people have complained of crashes or freezes with iTunes but I've experienced nothing major, the first connection took a few minutes to get going as expected. The iPod itself I'll summarise: Pros: *So far the battery has lasted really well considering I've been playing with it for most of the day, video and audio. *The new touches like album art displayed in an artists album listing and the floating art in the split screen mode add greatly to the ever so satisfying UI. *The new Shuffle function accesible from the Now Playing screen is really handy if like me you are fussy when you're listening. Cons: *Cover flow really IS a little superfluous. You'll soon find yourself removing it from the menu completely. It IS somewhat slow to respond at times due to the hard-drive being slower than flash memory. As a result, getting from A-Z takes quite a while and if you know exactly what you want to listen to this can be frustrating. Also the rigerole of finding all the album art that iTunes itself misses (which is a lot) is painstaking work. At the same time I can imagine that if you have sorted your album art and are just browsing for something to play it's a little nicer than reading all the artist names. *As most have pointed out, there is no scratch proof plastic on the screen like the iTouch or iPhone because, well...Apple are tight and lazy. *Still no mains charger and not even a soft case with this one...again I assume because Apple are tight and lazy. Other: *Sound quality is acceptable, it's not as good as my old Sony but it really doesn't need to be unless you're exceptionally picky. As always the headphones are naff, invest in something good and you will seriously raise the sound quality anyway. *Some have complained that the player is sluggish to navigate (due to the glitsy album art etc.). I have no idea what it was like without the firmware update and whether that helps because thats one of the first things I did but I've got no complaint. Yeh sometimes it takes a second to drop back down to the Music menu from the artist menu as it loads some art but its nothing major. Also when you select an artist it's about a second to load the album covers in that menu and this reduces the clickwheel respose a little. (I hope Apple take on baord the problems some people are having and include an option to disable this is future firmware updates) In short: By no means is this the be all and end all, still hard drive based means it's not as sharp as flash will be but its the only option for at least the near future. It isnt the best player for sound quality and there are niggles but then again every item on the market has different problems. One thing the iPod has bucket loads of is style and this shouldn't be overlooked. It's incredibly satisfying to use, it looks great both physically and in terms of the UI which is vastly easier to use than anything else I've ever tried.
Good device, but be aware of what's not in the box. October 24, 2007 Mr. Rds Harley (UK) 47 out of 50 found this review helpful
There's a wealth of good reviews for the new 'Classic' already, so there's not much I can add on that score (except to echo what someone else has mentioned about it not being loud enough). As someone who has upgraded from an ageing and now unreliable iPod 4G 30Gb, I was caught out by what's NOT in the box when you get your shiny new Classic. The docking cradle that came included with the old 4G is now an option costing extra, and while you can still use the old 4G docking cradle, the slimmer Classic does not sit securely in it and you could easily damage the cradle connector if you accidentally knocked the setup while in use. The Classic does come with a cradle adapter but that will only fit the newer Universal Dock that costs something like 35 (although it does include a remote). The lack of a cradle isn't a problem if you're happy to place your Classic on the desk and simply connect it using the USB cable provided. The other thing is that you don't get a USB Power Adapter - this is like a 3-pin plug that enables you to charge the Classic directly from the mains (again it's now an extra cost option). The one from my old 4G works fine with the Classic but without it you're limited to charging your iPod from a PC or laptop, which if you're travelling might not always be available.
Great, but... October 11, 2007 J. Probert 35 out of 36 found this review helpful
This new version of the iPod video is much better than the previous 5th generation one. It has much better battery life (30 hours for the 80Gb and 40 hours for the 160Gb), much more memory for an affordable price. It is however the little things that apple do that annoy me. There is no case with it, so i have to buy one myself. But oh well, not much of a bit deal. The usual rubbish earphones, but we all knew that anyway. The new matt aluminium finish is great, it means less scratching that the old version. But why??!! oh why!?! did they leave the mirror finish on the back? I can't put the thing down anywhere without it scratching. So it stays in the case all the time, where you can't show it off! hehe But other than this, A great piece of kit with the best music interface there is (iTunes). There are also new improved games!! Cover flow is also a really neat novelty, although if you don't have 100% of the artwork it looks a bit naff. It also eats battery life so i don't tend to use it much, but that is up to you. And don't buy the 160Gb, it's waaayyy too big. I have 15 or audio books and 5000 odd songs and mine is nowhere full so I wouldn't bother. Don't get the touch either, too small, it's jsut the iphone without the phone.
The best choice to upgrade from a 30GB ipod Video September 12, 2007 Matt Smith (London) 22 out of 25 found this review helpful
The new Metal front feels lovely which makes it slightly thinner than the 30GB video, silver looks better than Black i went to see them in the apple shop Amazing value for money at 159 for 80GB of space The new menu systems are so much more pleasing to the eye including coverflow which is actually useful battery life is now extremely long Do not hesitate to buy, however: MAC USERS BEWARE - even if you have the latest itunes the ipod classic WILL NOT WORK WITH PANTHER OS X 10.3.9, neither will the new nano. You need TIGER OS X 10.4.8 as stated in the system requirements
THE LATEST GENERATION OF THE BEST MP3 PLAYER ON THE MARKET !. September 24, 2007 NEO (orpington kent) 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
I have to confess that I am now hooked on the whole iPOD idea as years gone by. I had to struggle with a cassette walkman and dozens of tapes and later on with CD's. So to get my first second hand 4th Gen iPod has been a dream come true to get all my albums on one tiny device. However I could not resist this new next gen 'Classic' as Apple have now renamed it. With it's large 80GB hard drive a reputed 30 hrs battery life and the large colour display. This is more space than I will ever need with my humble music colection but it is there if I need it. But on closer inspection there really isn't much new about this iPod as it's a re-vamped 'Video' model. It would have been a bonus if Apple had included a radio into the new design as most other MP3/4 players have this. Once Apple lead the world with innovation but now they seem to have been left behind at least with this model !. Also another important negative point is that everything except the iPod itself and the tinny earphones and the socket plug. Have to be purchased as an expensive extra including the charger the docking station etc , etc. Now this is a great money making move by Apple but it means that the money spent on the main device is only the start. I think for the high purchase price Apple need at least to provide a charger and the software as standard !. I can see that Apple will maybe next year replace the normal iPod's with the 'Touch' as a full range. This is okay as long as they increase the low capacity of the Touch which is little more than the iPhone without the Phone part !.
