Fantastic Hard Drive June 28, 2007 Reflix 82 out of 84 found this review helpful
The response time is great, fast transfer times. For an estimation, I transferred around 5.5gb to the hard drive (formatted to NTFS using "Quick Format") in aroung 5-6 minutes. Make sure you format this drive to NTFS as soon as you get it. The enclosure is sturdy aluminium, and feels VERY well made. It is very cool to touch, and with moderate usage, gets mildly warm. It is super quiet. Barely audible even when listening to music. This is a lot better than a WD Mybook, which is plastic covered and offers a less effective passive cooling. Aluminium acts as an excellent heat dissipater. The real bonus is portability. The power brick is extremely small. Plus, included is a UK plug and a worldwide plug, so it can be used anywhere. When I run out of space on this drive, the only drive I will be looking at are going to be Freecom. One purchase I won't regret.
The best external hard drives in my opinion. July 10, 2007 Mrs. K. L. Wren (UK) 76 out of 77 found this review helpful
I have several of these drives and will soon be ordering more. They're smaller than many others, very well made, almost silent and come with a 2 years Bristish warranty. I had one with a faulty power supply unit - I emailed Freecom's Customer Service and a replacement was sent the same day - giving me complete confidence in the company (with no need to return it to an overseas address).
Good Value and extremely well made July 26, 2007 Mr. P. Baker 71 out of 72 found this review helpful
The drive case is extremely well made and looks good with the brushed alluminium case. It is extremely quiet having no fan and with the large memory cache on board file transfer is extremely fast when used on a USB 2 port. It uses the case to dissipate heat generated and can get warm with a lot of usage , though it doesn't get overly hot. Plug it into the USB port , plug in the power adapter , turn on the power switch on the back and the drive is recognised and configured for use, takes about an hour to format to NTFS from FAT32. Well worth considering if you are looking for extra external storage , somewhere to put backups and/or to carry large amounts of files between PCs.
Best Hard drives April 20, 2007 A. Thirkettle (Finedon, uk) 49 out of 53 found this review helpful
This hard drive is the best.... its got a 16mb buffer and others have only half that!...its fast and with no fan which means no noise. Its sealed well which means no worries about dust getting in. Ive recently got a freecom SL 500GB with just 8mb buffer and it cost me 215. I can not believe the price and quality of this product with so much memory. My advice is Buy Now before there all gone!.
Great little drive April 21, 2008 Martin Allen (Cheshire Uk) 38 out of 39 found this review helpful
Firstly it is nice looking but quite heavy drive, but heavy means good quality, right. I paid extra for the silver over the plastic as you never know what is going to happen to plastic. Plugged in and my PC found the drive immediately. Clicked on the new drive letter and found that the drive was in FAT which can become a problem as FAT drives have a limit of 4Gb per file, meaning a whole movie will not fit in one file. So I changed it to NTFS. This was easy to do. In `My computer' right click on the Freecom drive and select `format'. This will open a little window, make sure you tick the little `quick format' box (or it could take up to an hour, as it is looking for bad sectors in a brand new drive) press OK and a few seconds later your drive is now NTFS. You need to do this before you have started transferring files otherwise the formatting will clear everything. So, why only 465gigs? This is to do with the way in which the hard drive manufacturers measure free space. They use 1000 bytes = 1KB whereas Microsoft use 1024bytes = 1KB hence the difference. If you right click the drive and select properties, the capacity will show as the correct amount (500,000,000,000+ bytes). Your PC internal drive works in the same way. It is nice and quiet and turns off when your PC is off (but the blue 500GB light remains on, so power of sorts is still going through it). This is my second Freecom drive and both are better than the first one I bought (Envisage). If you do get problems, which I haven't, it has a UK phone number unlike the Western Digital. Very fast, very cool and very very quiet, superb buy.
