A superb GPS receiver that doesn't disappoint. January 19, 2008 L. Bowers (Uk) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've been really impressed with my GO 520 Music Edition. It's intuitive interface, extensive list of features, and overall performance have won me over. For the most part, the menu system is very clear and natural. I did, however, find that a couple of the options I wanted to turn off were tucked away in obscure places, but this is a minor niggle. The menu items you will need to access regularly are right where you'd expect to find them. Connecting it up to my Sony K800i phone was a breeze, and it all worked perfectly, first time, over Bluetooth. The unit's performance has exceeded my expectations. The GPS locking is fast and strong (even deep inside my house), and the overall speed of calculations and the display is very impressive. Audio quality through the built-in speaker is not, to my ears, as clear as my old GO 300, but it's still more than up to the task. You can route the instructions and/or music through your car stereo (via an FM frequency) if you'd prefer. I haven't yet connected my iPod Touch up to the unit, but I've read that I can actually control the iPod from the GO 520's touch screen. As soon as I connected the GO 520 to my PC (Windows XP), the TomTom home application updated the software to the latest version, and downloaded the latest "safety" camera database. You get a latest map guarantee, that lasts for 30 days. The GO 520 sits in a desktop dock (supplied) and charges when connected to your computer. I can't recommend this GO 520 Music Edition enough.
Dont update! January 29, 2008 Mr. R. Aldous (UK) 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
Out of the box the TomTom seems great, however when I tried updating the device it corrupted the hard disk resulting in a flashing red circle with a white X. I returned it and got a replacement. After it arrived I had to prove to TomTom I had a replacement as the device number logging it to you can only be changed every 6 months, once sorted I tried running the updates again, this time on the replacement, only for it to happen again.
Great with my Mac after software update February 9, 2008 J. Grigg (uk) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Device itself worked straight out of box.(In store car park!) While I popped out of car to drop my 10 year old's friend off she added the place as a favourite and named it. It really is that simple. Great with ipod. Speed differs from my speedo by about 3mph-who is right?? Software on CD in box was not compatible with my mac and only half worked, kept freezing. I went online and downloaded the latest for mac version and it works brilliantly. Lots of free voices- though some are a bit ropey! Exceeded expectations, only 4* due to software probs. Had no problems with the windscreen mount as seen in other reviews, tried others out in the shop and thought this the best.
Over-complicated, Mac-unfriendly, petty support but otherwise ok January 17, 2008 Superleccy (Newbury, UK) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
Basically it's a nice device. GPS reception is good and accurate and the display is bright and easy to read (if a bit cluttered sometimes). Sound is clear. Okay, it suffers from all the problems that SatNavs are famous for, like the occasional bizarre routing (eg insistence that you turn left at no-left-turn junctions etc etc). It's also annoying to have in the car and frankly I find it makes driving more stressful, not less. But I could've guessed that already. Still, It's loaded with a heap of features that I can't imagine anyone would want to use (or should try and use if they want to remain safe on the road - do I really need to store photos on it, or need John Cleese or my girlfriend telling me where to go?), and these clutter up the menus and make the device more complicated that it should be. What really annoyed me though is that the "Latest Map Guarantee" is impossible to redeem unless you have access to a Windows PC. The supplied TomTom Home software for the Mac is a major version behind the Windows version, and cannot be used to load maps onto the device. TomTom Customer Support originally told me they'd extent my Guarantee until they'd released the right Mac software, but then emailed me back to tell me they'd changed my mind. How petty is that? Their attitude makes me wonder what other snags I'm going to hit in the near future.
TomTom 520 January 13, 2008 John (Lancashire) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The TomTom 520 seems good value for the money. It does everything it says on the label. I have tried the voice recognition for addresses without major problems, only on a couple of occasions did it fail, although in fairness, there was a lot of background noise. Text messages are displayed or read out to you, depending on your prefference. Other speedcamera databases can be added and run alongside TomTom's own. My only criticisms are the usual lack of detail in TomToms instruction manual (on the disk), and the over speed allowed function being slow to react, (you have to be 5 mph over at least). Delivery by Amazon was on the last day of their estimate, but fifteen days is a long time compared to others and the box was damaged on arrival.
