4 out of 5 stars Navman S30 Review for Sat Nav Virgins   November 12, 2007

I am a sat nav virgin; I wear my badge as a technological luddite with pride. However, I was recently lost in a city centre unable to find my final destination and I eventually had to ask for assistance (not an easy task for the male of the species). I usually travel on roads I know so therefore did not want to spend too much money on a sat nav system. The earlier Navman F20 got good reviews so I decided to invest in the latest entry model. The unit DID work straight out of the box much to my delight. I have used this unit to assist my journeys on a long weekend break in Northumbria and the Scottish Borders and it directed me to the correct desination each time even though many of the places I wished to visit were only accessible using single track unclassified roads, which impressed me no end. Travelling back home I chose the shortest route option which again worked fine, I did take a detour which the system warned me take a U turn when safe to do so but after a few further warnings it re-calculated the new route correctly. The screen was clearly visible in both low winter sun and in the dark and the sound was audible and sufficient warning was given for any instruction to be fully carried out safely. In summary, a simple to operate system which on initial use worked well.

4 out of 5 stars Good first sat nav   November 10, 2007

I purely based this purchase on the reviews of previous models from Navman and just hoped that the high standard of reviews would continue in the new range, so far I have been fairly impressed with what I've purchased. I suppose I would consider myself quite good with electronic goods, but I literally had this working within 5 minutes. I entered my work address as a test, it calculated the route and off we went.

The S30 is the entry model and if all you need to use it for is the odd business trip, weekends out or family holidays in UK/Ireland then I would say this will do the job. Sales reps and heavy duty drivers may need to consider one of the more serious models.

Good points

- Easy to use
- Voice loud enough
- Plenty of warning on directions
- Calculates speed and warns you of speed cameras
- Memory card slot
- Excellent value for the money

Bad Points

- The keyboard touch screen is no good if you have large fingers. (I use the end of a pen)
- Some postcodes are incorrect (This maybe a postal service issue to be fair)
- It will take you on the route, which it deems the quickest. (But you can ask it to avoid certain areas i.e. the M25)
- The maps are not 100% up to date (the one way system in my town no longer exists, but the sat nav shows it still being there)

4 out of 5 stars NavMan S30 - Brilliant!   December 5, 2007

Brilliant! What a good piece of kit this truely is. I have to say that I did actually but the S30 off another retailer who was cheaper at the time though (woops to Amazon!).

The S30 is more than I expected for the just over 100 mark, it's got all the great features one would expect from an entry level sat nav device, and more. For example, instead of reading out "in 1.5 miles take the next exit" when on a motorway it'll read out "in 1.5 miles exit the M6 at junction 12" or whatever, very precise. As other users have said, it gives a good amount of prior time before your next change in direction, and the voice volume IS very clear (in my peugeot 306 1.4 which can get pretty noisy at time...and with the radio on as well let's not forget). You do get a 6 month trial of the Safety Camera (speed camera to humans) software which is very good (except on the M42 where they're trying out Active Trafic Management or ATM where it shouts at you for going over 30), and you can change the amount of warning time you get for the distance from safety cameras, like half a mile or a full mile if you rocketing along quite naughtily.

I actaully can't think of many bad points about this unit. It's small and lightweight and works really well if you're just walking about as well as in a car (I used it in Nottingham City Centre to find my way around just yesterday and it found lots of McDonalds for me!). It does suffer slightly from glare in very bright sunlight, but the voice commands are good enough to fall back on here.

The only bad point that I can point out is that the website support and product registration is a load of balls. I'm a web and graphics designer so I know my way around the internet alright but even after 4 days I still haven't managed to register my S30 and the support team haven't gotten back to me either...oh well. Oh and the supplied software for your PC, "NavDesk" doesn't seem much cop either.

Product: 98% Brilliant
Website & Support: 98% rubbish

All in all, buy one if you want a cheapy. I was initially going to get the Binatone or RAC 200 but they seemed pokey and not as bright as this model. I'd also read quite a few bad reviews about the Binatone being rubbish in the time it takes to calculate a route and not even be able to do so sometimes, and the RAC model looks about rubbish and pales in comparison to the Navman S30.

I researched satnavs on the internet and this one came up best in the 'budget' class and the reviews on Amazon were really helpful. So I ordered and it really is very good. I haven't even read the instructions yet, just followed the set up tutorial and I'm ready to go. I like the voiced directions as I find it hard to follow written/visual directions while driving, especially around London, and I like to have someone to argue with!! I'm really pleased with this satnav and I think it's great for social use (rather than business) and very very easy to use.

2 out of 5 stars Very poor quality sound.   November 24, 2007

After having returned three Garmin units due to faults I bought one of the Navman S30s thinking it would be a better quality unit. How wrong I was. The first time I used it was a bright day with winter sunshine and it was impossible to read the screen so I had to rely on the voice prompts but even with the volume set on maximum I could hardly hear it. As it was only two days old I returned the unit and exchanged it for a Tomtom One V3 Europe. WOW. This unit is superb. Very easy to use, excellent anti glare screen and extremely loud voice prompts which also increase in volume as you increase your speed.
Do not buy a Garmin or Navman. If you want a simple, easy to use, well built unit that works straight out of the box buy a Tomtom.
