Nice bit of kit... with some problems October 28, 2007

Nice bit of kit, and works well.
It can quickly find a good route even when you make a wrong turning it can quickly guide you to where you want to be.
The display is clear and it is fairly easy to use.
The first problem is that there is no USB cable, so in order to update the maps you need to buy one separately.
The second problem is with the maps, I took this on a drive across the UK and came across several map errors.
Including: a missing road and a one way street which it thought was two way. Use with caution.

As with most technology these days theres a lot of choice, so when deciding which SAT NAV to go for I read several reviews for this model & also various SONY & TOM TOM models which were helpful as there were some very valid points highlighted.The reviews helped me make the decision to go for the NUVI 250W. I wanted a widescreen and Euro mapping and as this has it already loaded it was the ideal choice @ 135,as buying mapping software can be expensive afterwards !! I ordered this model @ 13:00 hrs on a Thursday,requested express delivery and as promised it arrived @ 11:00 the next day,what more can you ask ?? As for the NUVI250W,well "it does what it says on the tin" as they say,mine worked straight of out the box,didn't need charging first,found satellites quickly,even indoors.It's simple to use and easy to navigate through the menus.I know some people have had problems but I can't say that i've found any yet, the only downside is that it doesn't come with a USB lead but then my digital camera lead fits fine. Some reviewers have winged about there being no mains charger, but I only use mine in the car and it comes with a in-car charger so why do you need one ?? I would recommend this product.

I had decided to buy a GPS. I read plenty of poor reviews and a few good ones for the Garmin range. Some of the poor reviews stated that owners wished they had gone for the Tom-Tom option. I opted for the Garmin widescreen with Euro maps at 155. What a bargain.
Straight out of the box the GPS is intuitive and easy enough to use. Once programmed with favourites it is easier still. Reading the manual helps even more!
I have sufferd none of the problems I've seen listed. It picks up satelites quickly in all the areas I've visited to date, re-calculates quickly when I decide to ignore the instructions and doesn't need the mains charger if it's plugged into the car. (I have 2 chargers from games and phones which do the job anyway but do this at your own risk).
Problems? It would be nice to have the mute and volume buttons on the main screen. Other than that the first few weeks and several trips in mixed country have been great.
Nice bits? Auto dimming of the screen at nightfall, having a greater knowledge of how GPS works that I do (it seems to re-set to the favoured options automatically, easy on the eye (4.5" widescreen, light and portable.
Tom-Tom? Curiously at my sisters place last weekend there were a number of horsey types complaining about build quality, coverage, ease of use etc and asking where I got my widescreen from. I've also had a fair few people say that Garmin have a better reputation overall.
Just hoping the good stuff continues.

I researched this for some time before buying it and was initially pleased with the ease of use when I was trying it with the sat. nav. switched off. It was compact and easy to carry. I was disappointed not to have a USB cable included so I purchased one at extra cost. Upon first use, it was slow to find the satellite but when it started the voice was clear and the instructions good. It did not recognise some of the road junctions or bends, giving slightly confusing voice signals but the map was clear. The maps did not have some of the locations on, being too new, so it tried hard to send me a different route. Auto re-route was quick.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed that after 2 weeks of testing, its ability to find a satellite got worse and I had to return it as it was not useable: on some journeys I reached my destination and returned, without it finding a signal. It also did not work in the house, so I could not set it up prior to leaving home.
I have replaced it with a Tom Tom and this is speedy by comparison, it finds the signal by the time I have fastened the seat belt and started the car. As it comes with a USB, I now have a unecessary bit of kit!
