Recomended July 23, 2007 James Corbett (UK) 47 out of 51 found this review helpful
I have just upgraded from the original TomTom One and I am very pleased so far. The screen is great, clear and large, brighter than the GO 510 and slightly wider too. Quickly locates signal from satellites and even locates a signal inside my house, where the old tomtom one could not. I was very surprised that the device has no SD card though, the maps are built in. There is an SD slot though which means I can buy more maps and run them side by side, or allow for more downloads.
Not perfect though... I have the Europe version, so this may slow it down, but it does seem to take longer to find a route on a long journey, but on that same note, it seems to find better routes sometimes too, taking off a few minutes sometimes, might be the new maps maybe. Also very annoying, I have a tomtom plus subscription, which should allow me access to both speed cameras and traffic. I could download the cameras without a problem, and it does come pre-installed, however my traffic account is now in limbo. My old device is no longer linked so I cant use it on that, but the new device will not let me use it either saying another device is using it. I hope to get this resolved soon, but other than that, I'm very impressed.
Great SatNav let down by poor accessories September 6, 2007 M. Bernard (Aberdeen, Scotland) 43 out of 43 found this review helpful
Having upgraded from Navigator 5 on a PDA, I am familiar and very happy with the tomtom product. Also no longer having to fiddle with an external bluetooth GPS device is great.
As a lot of other reviewers have pointed out, the accessories are poor. I would expect at a minimum: - a home charger - a carry case (even a nylon one would have been useful) - a windscreen mount that actually stays attached to the windscreen. The one provided is cheap rubbish, and is more of a safety hazard as it decides to detach itself in mid journey
So great product, but you will need to shell out at least another 40-50 pounds to get the necessary extras.
Don't Believe the Negative Reviews October 12, 2007 L. H. Kirby (London, UK) 39 out of 40 found this review helpful
I'll be honest, I was put off buying this product having read some of the negative reviews on this page. But now that I've had the opportunity to try out the device, software and associated website I'm a little mystified why anyone would give it less than a top rating. The whole thing is very 'plug and play' (which is essential as I have no IT skills whatsoever) and I've had no experience of any of the niggles mentioned by other users. I'd recommend it.
Wheres the carrying case??? July 21, 2007 Mr. AA KHAN 37 out of 50 found this review helpful
This sat nav devise is great in terms of what its supposed to do technically. (although at first glance the in car holder does seem a little short of expectation to securely hold the device in place- however i have yet to experience the device falling off)
My critiscm comes from the confusing fact that you are not provided with a standard carrying case for this devise (despite all the anti-theft reminders by tomtom not to leave the devise in your car). Other previous models of tom tom devices come with cases as standard.
Expect to spend another 15 (min) for a case.
Takes the hassle out of navigating unfamiliar roads November 24, 2007 N. MARTIN (Guernsey, UK.) 34 out of 34 found this review helpful
180 or so will buy you loads of road atlases but you're much better off using the money to buy a Satnav. The amount of stress eliminated by being able to concentrate on the driving rather than navigating in unfamiliar territory is immeasurable. I bought a Tom Tom One XL with UK and Western Europe maps in July 2007, and I can thoroughly recommend it. Of course, unless you're a delivery driver or regularly travel to previously-unvisited places your Satnav will spend long periods sitting unused, but it'll still be very useful when needed. Previous reviews have mentioned valid points such as the lack of a carrying case; no mains charger and no coverage of the Channel Islands, but I wouldn't say that any of these are show-stoppers. I do wonder whether the people who say that the sucker doesn't stick are wetting it before attaching to the windscreen. I always have a job pulling ours off the widescreen, and it has not once fallen off. A word of warning about the accompanying PC software: I nearly killed my unit whilst updating the main operating system on it. I had connected it to my PC prior to lending it to a friend - the software said that there were ephemeral updates (those are updates on what parts of the earth each satellite is orbiting), and also a newer version of the main program. There was insufficient spare memory to apply the updated program without making space first by temporarily deleting the existing one. To be fair, the software did warn me that this wasn't recommended, but what else could I do? I applied the updates after making space but when I tried restoring the temporarily-removed maps etc. it said that this wasn't possible because the main program was missing! I overcame this by installing the software on another PC (phew!). Judging by other reviews I was lucky that I didn't need technical support. I'm not entirely convinced that the wide screen on the XL is worth the extra money. You see more of what is to your left and right (or is the map just a stretched version of the non-widescreen?), but surely it would be better to see more of what's ahead? At least there's more screen space to display other information such as average speed, bearing and estimated arrival time. All in all this is the best electronic product that I've purchased this year.
