4 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi 270 Portable Sat Nav   August 21, 2007

Throw away your Street Atlas - Welcome to hassle free route finding. You should never get lost again in some unfamiliar town. A great little machine from one of the top two manufacturers. In my opinion comparable wth the U.K. top selling TOM TOM products that I have used previously. Does take a little while to plot the initial route and route re-calculations can sometimes take a while longer than expected. Bright sunshine can occasionally make the screen glare slightly but the voice commands are generally sufficient to overcome this minor problem. Haven't tried it in Europe yet - don't suppose I ever will use the USA or Canada options. Overall an excellent device that you can buy with confidence. Shame they don't supply a carry case as standard - does seem somewhat mean as some manufacturers such as LG do. I use a padded digital camera case to carry mine - seems ideal.

5 out of 5 stars Sat Nav Must Have   August 29, 2007

After spending many hours researching and reading various reviews I decided to buy the Garmin Nuvi 270 and I am so glad I did.
I've recently been to Florida and what a god send, even though the roads are well signed this little beauty would navigate to the required destination with pin point accuracy and if you did miss your turning or take the wrong road the unit recalculates your route with minimum fuss, it is preloaded with loads of points of interests such as attractions, shopping malls, atm's,restaurants, airports the lists goes on.
The only negative I can think of which doesn't warrant dropping this unit to 4 stars is, when charging the unit there is no meter to show whether it is fully charged.
As an entry level SatNav I can honestly say you wont buy better for the money, at present on Amazon.co.uk 179.99

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   November 21, 2007

I spent well over 3 days looking at what GPS to get my parents for christmas.
Firstly i started off with TOMTOM after just seeing an advert for one (yes advertising works!) then after reading some reviews of "looses signal", "gets lost" "cheap tack" and "falls of window" i switched to Navmans. I know nothing about this technology so i hunted around again at the latest Navmans and after finding one with Europe/USA mapping it was really expensive.

I then went onto my flight simulator X (brill btw) and noticed that my B747 had a Garmin GPS system. That got me thinking and i worked out that if areoplanes use it then they must be a good make.

After flying around Boro in a plane i went to Garmin website and looked at each model under 260, started with the 250 which is good but only simple mapping, then up to the European version, i nearly bought this one off Amazon because of the cheap price and good reviews. but i didnt..

after asking mum/dad some questions, i discovered plans to go the USA in a few years time, then i looked at this little gem of the Nuvi 270.
After hunting around i found prices ranging from 260 (gps.com [or something similar] to 150 on Ebay), i avoided ebay on this one in case it goes wrong as i know Amazon have a brill returns policy.

SOo i buy it off here for 211.99 (Nov 2007) and it arrived a few days later by HDNL. I got it out and without reading the instructions set it up, after around 30seconds it found the Street, Town and Country of where i was. and i'd accurate to within about 10feet.

I then tested it out, best route to Cheltenham (one that i took regulary) was the same as what i would take anyway, brilliant then Scotland again avoiding the Whitby Coastal road was a wise choice.

I love this little Garmin, although not really tested it seems pretty good with all the extras, i would go with this instead any of the ones that play music (thats what iPods are for, not Satnavs) (get an FMT for listening to pod in the car)

So if you want a GPS go for this gem, well work 211

5 out of 5 stars surprisingly good   October 27, 2007

I have to admit to buying this device on price but it is pretty brilliant! I would only compain about the time it takes to log onto satelites when first switched on. This seems to take ages but if you switch it on before you get into the car this is fine. Otherwise it seems to do everything asked of it and some more. Also the battery life seems good and it it very small so good to use outwith the car.
At its price I can thoroughly recommend this.

I had wanted a SatNav with European maps preloaded for some time and was waiting for prices to fal to acceptable levels. Then I saw the 270 advertised with USA mapping preloaded as well..the only problem was the price. Amazon.co uk launched an offer and I took the plunge.
The Nuvi 270 sems a remarkable piece of kit in that it has all the maps preloaded (I did not want to bother having to down-load maps every time I went to Europe or the USA).
The good news is it works, I have used it in UK and Florida. It takes a few minutes to relocate itself when changing countries and to find the relevant satellites.
The voice instructions are clear and precise. The mapping is sometimes out of date (told us to look for a roundabout on the A38 which has since been removed). Have to be careful with keep right or left commands when the are no obvious alternatives.
The biggest problem we found was when trying to locate a shop, we had the post code but no street number so I had to guess one...the unit took us to the wrong end of a long street and we only found the shop by chance but this is the fault of the post code system and the failure of the shop to use its full address rather than the 270.
I would give it 5 stars if it had not cost us 30 minutes driving down narrow Devon roads towing a caravan because I mis-understood a command (I swear it was a poor instruction though the wife may say something different).
In my view it is not a complete substitute for a map reader but it is a very handy confirmation that you are heading the right way.
