Buy yourself a good map instead February 25, 2007 Rain Man (Location - Don't know, my Navman cannot tell me.) 58 out of 68 found this review helpful
Having travelled around the UK for the last 25 years I have always been rather scaptical about GPS navigation devices. But, I felt I needed better help than the old map books I had floating around the car from 1998. So, I bought a N20. First for the good side - Set up is easy and install is also simple. Even thought the manual that came in the box is for the N40i version ( which has a camera - doh!) and the in car installation sheet tells you nothing about the rubber suction pad and how you release it.. Now lets see how it works - So I got in the car and tried it out. I live in South west Wales. The first thing the thing tried to do was send me up the wrong way up a one way street in our town!!. I wondered if this was a recent change to the road but, no, it has always been 1 way. Decided to then see how it faired on a couple of longer runs. First trip to Carlisle. It worked out that it would be quicker to go up the middle of Wales. The machine assumes that as a road is marked to allow 60MPH then it would be quicker to use it. Have you tried to do 60MPH to Newtown from Carmarthen. We were both nearly sick. Short story is the ETA was a whole hour out by the time we had gone 3 hours into our journey. Should have gone up the M4 and M5. Once we hit the M6 it kept telling us to keep right, correctly, on a number of major junctions on the M6 but on way to Huddersfield on the return had no knowledge of the M60/M61 and M62 changes around Manchester. Luckily we know the road and were able to keep left as we needed to. Thanks Navman. My house which was built 5 years ago is knowhere to be seen! The Dual carriageway around Merthyr is not present (finished 2 years ago!) and I found my icon wondering across a green area of land with the Navman telling me to find the nearest road... Brilliant I have the device set to find us the quickest route but while making a detour over the weekend to do a bit of shopping on the way back it then decided that the route we had taken on our own decision was actually quicker than the one it had initially suggested. Again - Brilliant. Anyway... look at the base of the N20... A label indicates it was designed in New Zealand and built in China. Obviously the maps installed (and supposedly updated in 2006) have probably made by the same poeple who have never visited the UK. There is also another problem with the delay on start up as it locates itself. Try not to depend upon it if you jump in the car in a busy town and drive away quickly. It will attempt to send you in a direction which it calculates from the last time it was running. It you have moved before it has had time to re-aquaint itself then it will be wrong in its directions. What is it good for? As a GPS tracking device - The ETA function is useful and pretty accurate as long as the route it has suggested is the one you finally take. In essence, I feel that then issues with the device are not with the device itself but with the Maps that are being used. I checked the CD which came with it only to find that the most recent maps are already loaded. I would not have minded if the mistakes were rare and were over a long period of time. I have had this thing for a week and only made 1 major journey. The number of times it has got things wrong are just far to frequent. In conclusion - Buy a decent road map for a fiver at the Motorway services each year, use one of the multitude of Map sites if you need to go into an new town and plan your route and make sure you aquaint yourself with where you are going before you leave.
Great GPS November 7, 2006 RogMc (Reading UK) 48 out of 48 found this review helpful
I've had the N20 for a few weeks now and I am delighted with it. Main selling points for me were: - Lightweight and small. This is definitely true, it fits perfectly into the back pocket of my jeans when I leave the car parked. Just remember to take it out before you sit down. - 5 hour battery life. Haven't timed it, but it certainly seems very good. Ideal if, like me, you plan to take it out on leisurely bike rides or city breaks. - Full European maps. I was a bit dubious about this one, as I'd read that unlock keys may be required to load the maps from CD. I'd even been told this by Navman about the older icn-530 model the N20 replaces. But, they unlocked automatically in the SmartST software and loaded perfectly. Bear in mind that I had to buy a 2G SD card to load them onto, but I picked one up for 20 so no big problem. Or if you've got a 1G stick lying about, you can put most Europe (excluding Scandinavia) on it. - No U-turns. The Back-on-track feature works really well. If you decide to take a different route, it re-calculates really quickly and has been spot on so far. I'd read in other reviews that the sound quality was bad, i.e. low volume. I can say that this defiantly isn't true. With 3 screaming kids in the back and the CD player on, 3 quarter volume on the N20 is perfectly audible. After all, you only want it as audible background noise. The included Points of Interest are great, especially if you're interested in speed (safety?) cameras, parking or petrol stations (also comes with loads more). And I've found it very easy to download your own POI's from the web and transfer to the N20. I'd also read that it doesn't come with a mains charger (optional extra) - very useful for charging out of the car. This is true, but it was a nice surprise to find out that it actually charges using the included USB cable. The screen is great, nice and bright. Good solid windscreen mount. If I had to find a fault with it, it's sometimes taken 1-2 minutes to lock to a GPS signal when I turn it on while moving in the car. Not sure if this is because I'm moving or possibly where I've mounted it? All in all, a great GPS for a great price.

As with the previous review, this works straight out of the box ready to go. The only thing it doesn't come with is a standard mains charger so you must either charge in the car or via USB. In use the system is fairly straight forward and generally easy to use. The touchscreen works well and the dedicated buttons make the system easier to use when out and about as opposed to touchscreen only units, the buttons also have their own back light which is very handy. Battery life is good, the voices fine (although there are only 2 UK voices to choose from). Some people complain the speaker isn't loud enough but I haven't had a problem so far. Most importantly it gets you where you want to go, which is the whole point after all. The Back-On-Track feature works perfectly which means if you know a better route just take it and the unit recalculates the route to match your location. There are also good route planning options such as waypoints and avoid areas. There is even a detour function which is similar to the roadblock function on the TomTom units. I haven't really used other makes in anger but the Navman does all I want it to. There is also the option for real-time traffic via the optional T1 traffic module which could be very handy if you do a lot of miles. Highly recommended.

I BOUGHT THIS SAT NAV BECAUSE I WANTED UP TO DATE MAPS AND A BETTER GPS SYSTEM, ITS IS VERY EASY TO USE CAN CHANGE THE COLOUR OF THE MAPS, THE SOUND IS VERY LOUD COMPARED TO MY OLD SAT NAV EVEN WITH THE RADIO ON ,FROM SWITCHING IT ON FINDS GPS SIGNAL WITHIN 2 MINUTES IF NO TALL BUILDINGS ARE BLOCKING THE SKYLINE,BACK ON TRACK QUICKLY FINDS WHERE U ARE IF U TAKE WRONG TURNING. IF YOU CANNOT FIND A POINT OF INTEREST THATS NOT INCUDED IN THE LIST YOU CAN EASILY ADD YOUR OWN IN THE FAVOURITES BY POSTCODE AND EDIT IT WITH YOUR OWN TITLE YOU CAN ALSO NAVIGATE TO A PLACE BY USING NAVPIX CLICK ON PHOTO WITH DESTINATION DETAILS ADDED IT WILL TAKE YOU THERE. IT GIVES A DEMONSTRATION OF YOUR ROUTE BUT THIS CAN BE QUITE SLOW ESPECIALLY IF ITS A LONG JOURNEY,YOU CAN SCROLL THE MAP USING THE TOUCH SCREEN YOU DON'T GET A MAINS CHARGER BUT YOU CAN CHARGE FROM USB ON COMPUTER OR BUY USB CHARGER WHICH YOU CAN PLUG INTO MAINS,THE MAPS ARE NOT EXACTLY UP TO DATE I KNOW OF ONE ROAD ON THE M62 WHICH WAS COMPLETED IN THE LAST YEAR IS NOT ON I HOPE THIS DOES NOT PUT YOU OFF PURCHASING THIS SYSTEM
My first Sat Nav system - SUPERB October 31, 2006 Steve G (Hertfordshire, UK) 28 out of 28 found this review helpful
Bought this 4 days ago and am yet to be disappointed. It comes out of the box and can be used straight away - no need to use the manual. If you turn the wrong way (deliberate or otherwise) it recalculates your new route in seconds. The volume is fine and picture quality great - actually had to lower the brightness at night, even using the night time colours it offers. It contains many plesantly suprising features. As I was driving home on the day I bought it, it made a noise and a yellow box flashed up on screen - a speed camera up ahead - AMAZING! You can change the colour of the maps to something you like better, address search is very easy, the female voice is not annoying. The instructions are clear and are repeated the right number of times. Couple of very tiny gripes. The postcode facilty is not 100% accuate. Did a search for a property I knew to have the postcode ending in 6AS and it told me to go a street around the corner from it. When I typed in the address, it told me the house was in 6AU which is not correct. This may be more to do with Royal Mail's database however. Also the software is not compatible with Windows ME.
