Great product September 12, 2006 Big reader (UK) 120 out of 122 found this review helpful
I am new to the sat nav market so have nothing to compare it too. I have had the device for 3 days now and totally love it. It works right out of the box and is so simple to use. It has been a long time since a gadget has impressed me the way this has. You just pop in a poscode or address and it will find you within seconds and off you go. You can tell it where you live and when you want to come home you just touch the screen and up pops a simple menu and you click navigate home. It actually takes me right onto the driveway. It has also found me a few little shortcuts that I did not even know about. One issue I am having with it is the PLUS features for the traffic info. You can pair it with your phone and then have your phone gain the info and then report back to your tomtom. The phone has been paired but that is not working. Very hard to get in touch with tomtom and to be honest they were not that helpful when I got through so it is still not resolved. But that aside and there are always teething issues with everyting I guess. This is a great little product. I am someone who can get lost in a straight line so I am excited now and I know it will help me lots. It is also very slim line not quite as slim as the garmin I may add but certainly not like the bulky tomtoms in the more expensive range. I love it!!

If you just care about getting from A to B and don't want to salivate over this latest gadget for hours, this is for you. I am on my second Tomtom having used a bulkier model before. It works straight out of the box and it gets you there. What is striking about a Tomtom is its simplicity. The software is simple, intuitive and uses chunky screen graphics to use without a stylus. Tomtom has reworked the dimensions of the unit and colour combinations and has gotten it right this time. The model is a huge improvement from its earlier counterparts. It is approximately 1.2 times a standard credit card in length and 0.8 times in breadth. It comfortably fits in your pocket or a ladies bag. Positives: - Gets you from A to B without the hassle. Step1: choose your postcode, Step2: choose the street name, Step3: choose the door number, Step4: start driving - Alternatively, this model also offers full postcode search. You could just type in the postcode and start driving. - Finally, latitude and longitude search, if you know what you are doing :-) - Relatively large touch-screen with solid graphical user interface. - Icons are suitably large to select with the touch of a finger, layout is also very simple. - You can store locations as favourites or browse from a list of recent destinations. - Good built-in GPS receiver, this maintains a gps lock throughout your journey. Negatives: - This basic model comes with GB map preloaded on a small SD card. Additional maps, if bought separately, require a larger SD card. - Connecting to some phone models still remains a struggle in order to get traffic updates (as mentioned by other users). - I'm struggling to find anymore... Nice touches: - You can store the exact location using "GPS position" once you are at your destination. - Volume of the voice command gets louder at higher speeds to make up for the ambient noise. - With this, you can be bold enough to deviate from your main route; the software detects this and quickly recalculates the route relative to your current position. Also helps if you miss an exit. - Uses standard USB cable to connect to a PC I have used Tomtom to travel from UK to several places in Europe. It has proved its worth by providing excellent door-to-door navigation. Now, I can't do without it!
Tom Tom One UK February 7, 2007 Mr. G. Belfer (UK) 94 out of 96 found this review helpful
This is the first in-car satnav I have owned (have been using for about 2 months now) and I am generally very impressed with the Tom Tom One (UK). Setting it up first was very easy and quick and took about 5 minutes from opening the box to being able to navigate a route. The display is very clear and bright with easy to understand instructions, with good and clear voice instructions of directions to take (lots of languages and voices to select from too). If you miss a turn or decide to take a different route it will automatically re-calculate a new one in a few seconds. Using the easy to follow 50 page manual and inbuilt help screens it's a doddle to enter and store all your addresses, new points-of-interests etc. and to plan journeys (with lots of options for "shortest", "fastest" "non-motorway" etc.). It comes complete with many "Points of Interest" built in and there are lots of other ones you can down load for free or very little money, if you look on the web. It does not come with speed camera locations built in but I easily found and downloaded these from a third party website for about 2. You have the option to pay for the Tom Tom "Plus service" for live traffic updates, speed cameras etc. via your Bluetooth mobile phone if you wish to. The computer software that comes with it is used for making backups to a computer (essential as all the map data/software needed comes on its SD card, not on a separate CD), and for updating (if you want to add additional "voices", maps - which you have to pay for- etc.) and runs without problems on my windows XP computer. Running on my Macintosh iBook (OS 10.4.8) though Tom Tom Home software does occasionally crash when connecting to the One (even after updating the TomTom Home software to the latest Mac version). The suction window cradle looks a bit flimsy but when pushed firmly onto the window it stays there without problems and does the job. It's a pity it does not hold the One a bit further away from the windscreen in my car as you can at night see a reflection of the top of the One LCD screen. There is no separate mains charger in the box but the supplied car lead and computer USB connection lead both charge the unit fairly quickly whilst the One is in use or turned off. I have had no problems with it running on its own internal battery for approx. 2hour+ journeys (with bluetooth off and screen brightness set to 60%). The One is quite light and slim and easily fits into my shirt/jacket pocket when leaving the car. The few navigation errors I have encountered so far (directions into a no-entry road, directions to do an illegal right/left turn and directions to go down a foot path!!! are all to do with errors in the Tele Atlas map data used and not the Tom Tom One itself (all sat nav devices seem to use the same map data from Tele Atlas or Navtec). You can report these errors online to Tom Tom or Tele Atlas and hopefully they will correct these errors when updating their maps. There is no way of telling the Tom Tom One of any changes in road access/errors etc. although you can tell it to avoid parts of routes you know to be a problem (but this does not help if you are traveling to an unknown area). In the beginning I did a few journeys along routes I knew so that I can get to know how the One gives its instruction for turning, upcoming road positioning etc. Used with a bit of common sense I have found the One to be a very useful and easy to use navigational aid. I highly recommend the Tom Tom One if you are looking for a low cost/quality entry into the world of in-car satnav.
Small in size, low in price & very high in usability - Top notch TomTom !!! October 25, 2006 Garry Wilson (Yorkshire, England) 83 out of 83 found this review helpful
I've not had Sat Nav before now, so I suppose you could say I've nothing to compare the TomTom One V2 to, but I have had plenty of gadgets in my time both good and bad, so I do feel qualified to give my views on this product. The software is superb, so easy and intuitive you don't even need to bother reading the instructions, which if you do, are well presented and meaningful. The signal lock is brilliant, I'm able to use it quite happily in the house, and whilst driving it's not lost the signal once. The windscreen holder is simple in design but works extremely well. Battery life seems good, the supplied USB cable is a useful way of topping this up whilst backing things up on your PC, or adding new points of interest to the device. Very easy to add additional points of interest, such as the location of speed cameras and fast food outlets, petrol stations etc.. If you deviate from the suggested route, re-calculation is automatic and takes around 5 seconds from my experience. The unit seems well made and fits neatly into the palm of your hand, it would fit very easily into a suit or coat pocket, making it ideal for use on foot as well in the car. If your mobile is GPRS enabled, I believe it's even possible to pair the One with your mobile via Bluetooth thus making it traffic aware to avoid problems on your calculated route. The price is unbelievable considering the usability, build quality, and expansion options of the product. I highly recommend this product and rank it in my top 3 gadgets I've ever purchased, alongside my Roku Wireless Music Player and the Sky+ box.
For what it is, its a real gem February 4, 2007 Mr. Peter A. Dabbs 67 out of 69 found this review helpful
Testing the TomTom One on local journeys, although there are several settings available, it doesn't necessarily pick the quickest or best route but definately gets you to your destination. And that's what it should do of course. I for one wouldn't travel on unfamiliar journeys without it now. You do need to be careful, particularly in places such as town centre routes as it may try to direct you into making illegal turns for example. On one occasion I was putting it to the test on routes very familiar to me, & having already gone past the junction it had (correctly) instructed me to turn down, it tried to redirect me the wrong way into a one-way street and then, after driving past that one, down an alley which goes nowhere. But to it's credit, if you are not happy with the turn it has just asked you to make and go past, it simply, and quite calmly (disappointing when using the John Cleese voice!) recalculates the route and will keep doing that until you go the way it tells you ! The display is clear and so is the voice and the speaker volume is more than adequate. It is light weight and nicely portable enough to go in a pocket, so useful for pedestrian navigation too. Now where did I leave my car? I've not tried it yet but I think you can set it up to avoid that problem. The windscreen attachment is fine, once it's firmly in place the only problem I've has is removing it again. I did have some difficulty updating the Tom Tom the 2nd time I attached it to my PC as I was advised there was not enough memory on the device for the update, but I overcame the problem by resetting it to its factory defaults and removing all the voices I am not likely to use, so now there is plenty of memory for updates. The device comes with an in car charger or can be charged from a USB port if you don't have a mains charger. The technology isn't perfect yet, if it was then it wouldn't try to get me to make illegal or unsuitable turns. You do still very much need to keep your wits about you in unfamiliar territory, and prompts for speed limits and lanes would be useful. One day perhaps. But for what it is, it's a real gem.
