A little gem that could have had more sparkle May 30, 2006 Mikey (Cheshire, UK) 110 out of 110 found this review helpful
My thoughts on the Nuvi 310 after the first week of usage: Good points: * Size - it's small and light (for satnav), the main reason I chose this over TomTom Go. * decent size & clear screen * Good clear maps, customisable with the amount of detail you want to show * Bluetooth setting for the phone worked a treat, and provides good clear hands free sound * Interface is intuitive, requires no user training! * Voice instructions are clear, although a little bit "robotty" * Speed cam POI databases are a breeze to download and use - with varying beeps and pings to warn you of impending cameras. * quick bootup - usually (see bluetooth firmware niggle below) * very quick calculations of routes, almost immediate when you miss/ignore a direction * Good battery life & recharge time Niggles: * can't read text messages on the unit via bluetooth (I've seen a TomTom Go 700 in action doing this). * garmin website isn't the best - I had expected downloads there rather than links to 3rd-party maintained ones. * I know this is a common problem irrespective of brand - but in the 1st weekend of usage I have been directed the wrong way up a 1-way street... * one time on turning it went through a "upgrading bluetooth firmware" process without any option to interrupt - fine, except it took 15 mins and I was waiting to set out on my journey! * no AC charger in the box - can only charge via USB cable or the in-car adapter. I've only owned "built in" satnav before so this may not be unusual, or a problem - time will tell. Overall - a good, neat unit, very usable - a little gem!! However, the minor niggles outlined above take some of the sparkle away. 4 stars.
The best Satnav yet October 18, 2006 Dai Dant (Dyfed, West Wales) 81 out of 81 found this review helpful
I was an early adopter of TomTom, and over the years I've tried several models as well as a Navman and a couple of in car systems. On balance this, our family's latest acquisition, is undoubtedly the best. To me the most important advantage is superior mapping. For example; this is the first portable device to show the correct one way system in Llanelli town centre. TomTom now make it easy to report mapping errors, but seem to do nothing in response with generations of software being issued repeating serious errors of which they have been advised. For some reason, TomTom irritatingly doesn't cover Ireland - a fact which led me to try thge Nuvi. The Nuvi has a solid feel and a really good, easily pocketable form factor. Apparently satnav devices are a frequent target of thieves and so a unit which can be so readily carried out of the car is an advantage. It is amazing just how many useful functions are crammed into such a small package. It all works well. It is quicker to acquire a position than TomTom and has worked in every vehicle I have tried, including those with a heated windscreen in which TomTom requires an external antenna to be plugged in and magnetically attached to the car roof. It isn't satnav perfection, there is room for improvement and I too would have given four and a half stars if available. Others have commented on the unappealing Garmin website where software and mapping upgrades could be easier to find. The device is WAAS capapable, but this accuracy improvement only works in North America - it's a pity it can't use the European equivalent, EGNOS. On the software side, I do feel that TomTom has a slight edge - or maybe I just haven't got used to Nuvi yet. My impression is that the TomTom menus are generally a little more intuitive, and the grammar and timing of the voice prompts just a little superior. On balance though, my preference is definitely for the Garmin Nuvi - I'm tempted to get a 360 model!
The almost perfect aftermarket sat nav solution July 12, 2006 AGH (Hamphsire UK) 57 out of 59 found this review helpful
Mmm, if I could give it 4.5 stars if I could, but 4.5 the average will be when the previous review is taken into consideration. Not many reviews of this product, so you might think, not popular, not a good solution. I almost didn't bother to review it myself because the review by "Mikey" hits the nail on the head so to speak. All the good points and niggles I would agree with including the mystical "upgrading bluetooth firmware" which was there for 30 minutes before I switched off and onn again to get rid of it. The maps are from Ordnance Survey and very accurate and actually include my house which has existed for 10 years, not long enough to make it into whatever maps TomTom uses it seems, I did try it out on a GO 510. I have the 310 Delux which includes part number "GTM 12" FM TMC travel information receiver and a life time subscription from traffic master. You can buy a GTM 12 and a subscription and activate it on a regular 310 if you've already got one. Much more of a no nonesense, serious in car, on foot, on bike sat. nav. system compared to competition.
Impressive piece of kit September 1, 2006 C. R. WARE (Cardiff.) 57 out of 59 found this review helpful
This is my 3rd GPS device - I've had to send 2 others back because of faults. Good points to emphasize: it's light and slim - easily slips into a pocket, unlike the Garmin C550 or the Tomtom 910. Good suction mount - combined with the former means it's steady and doesn't fall into your lap from time to time. From a GPS point of view it's much more reliable and accurate than the Tomtom 910 - it stays on the road and doesn't wander off into fields or do 180 turns like the Tomtom tends to do. Negatives: doesn't have the ability to pronounce street names (360 does), doesn't have all of Europe preloaded (only GB & Eire - rest supplied on DVD-ROM). Does not have the ability to download updates or traffic via your bluetooth phone, unlike the Tomtom 910. Overall it's a good solid piece of kit which should suit the serious traveller who's not interested in gadgetry.
Excellent all round product October 11, 2006 T. E. Norton 44 out of 46 found this review helpful
I looked at all of the Sat Navs at my budget of less than 300 and finally chose this Garmin Nuvi. I am very pleased I did. The build quality is very high, it came straight out of the box and worked perfectly first time. Set up time was minimal and I was on my way. The map display is clear as crystal and I love it. The bluetooth works perfectly with my mobile (Sony Ericsson K750i) and I can hear and be heard with no problem. It transferred all of my contacts and so dialling is a breeze from the touchscreen. Saving favourite locations is easy and if you want to find a petrol station or a restaurant during your trip is so easy to find one and the Nuvi will reset your route to go via whereever you choose. All in all so far I am delighted with my choice
