5 out of 5 stars There's nothing wrong with the Tom Tom 510   August 13, 2006

I wanted to write a review to sort out a few issues raised by others which may put you off buying one. I have had NO problems with this item at all. It doesnt freeze and there's certainly no issue at all with the windscreen holder. The charger falling out is due to having it badly placed, I suggest people try putting it lower down so it rests on top of the dashboard as recommended. As for freezing, well its never happened to me.
I used to own a Tom Tom Go 300 and i thought this would be a small but worthwhile upgrade. Wrong, its a massive improvement in every way!

Firstly theres the new quick fix system. The unit plugs into your PC and downloads the location of the 12 GPS satellites for the next week so instead of wasting a minute searching for them each time you turn on you get an instant fix. The screen is much easier to see thanks to the auto adjusting light sensors. When i first used mine the sun was glaring and there was rain and thunderclouds and i could still see the screen while wearing sunglasses! The text is larger, crisper and more spaced out thanks to the 4" widescreen display.

You can now do a "city search" so if you don't know exactly where you want to go but just want to visit a city you can! Just type in "Brighton" for example and it'll take you to the main town centre, so much easier than having to make up an address or type in a random postcode.
The 510 also connects directly into your PC so you can use the Tom Tom via your pc keyboard and screen and plan your journeys without having to tap the screen. The hands free kit works fine with my phone and makes talking and driving much safer. The list of features goes on an on, the best new addition is the ability to watch the 510 drive the whole route before you set off to get used to any tricky junctions. You can also see a series of snapshots of the journey to help you spot what to look out for

Overall i struggle to see how anybody could improve on this system. True, the first time i used it i got sent down a road that was shut for roadworks but you can hardly expect it to know every single road closure on a daily basis! Even this wasn't a problem, i simply did a u-turn and within 2 seconds the 510 had worked out an alternative route.

Forget what others may say, this is a top notch unit which i as an advanced driving tutor would recommend to any motorist. Get it or get lost.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Tom Go 510   May 5, 2006

The TomTom Go 510 well what can i say, only that this is a very nice piece of technology from TomTom, the widescreen is enormous and the clarity of screen and resolution are absolutely second to none, the speaker is super loud and clear and increases and decreases with how loud the engine noise and background noise is in the car, which is a nice touch. You can plug your Ipod or any MP3 player straight into the go and play through the go's menu system, and the Bluetooth for mobile phones is brilliant as it doubles as a hands free car kit and lets you see texts on screen as well as caller display to see who's calling you before you answer.

It gives clear spoken instructions in over 36 different languages, and allows the user to change voices so you can select to listen to the instructions from your favourite celebrity or comedian, i have John Cleese on mine telling me where to go and its hilarious.

The maps cover door to door routing for the whole of Great Britain and all major roads for the whole of Europe, which if you go across the channel regularly is a real plus point.
The GO 510 comes with a preinstalled Database of speed camera locations and after doing a 140 mile round trip today, was faultless as it picked up every speed camera that i passed even displying the correct Mph, there are thousands of P.O.I's already installed on the unit so you will be able to find your way to supermarkets or petrol stations with ease when in strange surroundings.
The unit also offers Traffic information free for a months trial, Downloaded over your bluetooth mobile phone connection which i must say works a treat as it alerted me to an accident on my route and enabled me to recalculate another route that guided me around the problem..

The new Sirf star III chipset is unbelievable and allows the 510 to get a lock in a matter of seconds even indoors and keep it, People with cars that have athermic windscreens and normally have to have an external antenna need not worry anymore as the chipset is so good even these windscreens cannot stop the signal.

On a sour note the docking car mount is a nightmare and i can see TomTom recalling these within weeks as you need to be an orangutang to actually dock and remove the unit from its mount, the new Routing Algorythms leave a lot to be desired and i will hold forth on this issue until i have had more time to test it, but lets just say they are different.

All in all this new TomTom go 510 is a fantastic sat/nav and blows my streetpilot i3 into the weeds, if they get that mount sorted out then theres absolutely nothing out there on the market that can touch it..

5 out of 5 stars Sat Nav has come of age   January 6, 2007

As someone who drives up and down the country regularly and an early adopter of Sat Nav devices I have to say that manufacturers have now finally got it right. The TomTom 510 is the best Sat Nav I've ever used. It boots up fairly quickly, finds satellites within seconds and reliably holds on to a signal even when there are overhead obstructions (obviously it won't work down a tunnel). The user interface is clear and easy to use and the spoken instructions are presented to you using a real voice rather than synthesised `robot-like' speech as preferred by some competing products. Route calculation is also quick.

Any mounting problems appear to be solved by a new click and release mechanism. In fact the mounting is the best I've come across. The secret (as mentioned in the instructions) is to make sure that the area of the windscreen where you want to place the mount is clean and to lightly moisten the plastic suction cup before fixing - REALLY. Before thieves caught on to Sat Navs I've had inferior suction devices stuck to my windscreen for months in all kinds of temperatures. As regards the accuracy of route calculations, ignore the people who write reviews and contact the BBC's `Watchdog' programme complaining that their TomTom nearly killed them by directing them into the nearest canal, these people shouldn't be allowed to drive their car out of the garage. Any Sat Nav device is reliant on the accuracy of the map data supplied by one of a very small number of third party mapping companies. Inevitably this data is usually out of date the day it is released and updates don't seem to appear that often and are usually at extra cost. Sometimes the directions you are given will be wrong, won't make sense or if you know the area, won't necessarily be your preferred choice. That said, when I used my TomTom to direct me from South London straight through the middle of the city, over Westminster Bridge and out the other side to all routes North, it did so without me making a single glance towards an awkwardly balanced `AtoZ' as used to be the case. On such occasions you'll wonder how you ever lived without Sat Nav.

My only complaint is the TomTom's obsession with the M25 and the removal of real time speed information on the display (for those like me who are fascinated as to how much your car's speedometer overreads). One of the best gadgets I've ever bought.

I had lots of reservations when purchasing this product after reading all the reviews on this site about dodgy cradles and the like, but after using the 510 for the last 6 months now I can say its brilliant! I would not go anywhere new without it now. I did not have any problems with the unit at all other than what everyone has with the maps being occasionally out of date (same with any GPS). So I will be first in the que when the updated maps come out and will certainly be sticking with Tom Tom in the future.

The TomTom Go 510 I received contained the latest software and a new style car mount which is supposed to solve the problems that some people faced with an earlier version.

So far it has performed superbly as I expected. An excellent product.
