Fantastic piece of kit May 31, 2006 Mark Scott (London, UK) 60 out of 60 found this review helpful
This is the top of the range Tom Tom and I was very impressed. The satellite reception is great, it even download the Satellites positions for the next 24 hours for a quicker positioning. The bluetooth connection is great although using it as hands free in the car requires the use of the remote microphone that is supplied as too much background noise is picked up without it. You can download extra voices including John Cleese which helps with the boredom of driving long distances. I am traveling to the states in June and I had it demo the route I will have to take from the airport to the rented house which gives me a real idea how complicated or in the case not the route will be. You can also download a five day weather forecast of where you are traveling to and it will even read out todays weather whilst you are driving. I was concerned when I purchased the 910 about the new mount, as other reviews had commented on how bad it was, I have had no problems with it, although I would like a version that did not have to stick to my windscreen ie a vent mount, especially with all the press about car thieft due to sucker marks on the windscreen.
Fairly good product, poor customer service March 16, 2007 Mark Franks (London, UK) 51 out of 52 found this review helpful
First the good points: Speech to text works really well, good clear screen, solidly built (which is useful - see below), once you're locked onto the satellite you stay locked on. I find the MP3 player quite useful, and you can't expect top quality sound without external speakers. It seems pretty good at knowing where the speed cameras are. In terms of navigation, although its no substitute for local knowledge about congestion etc it generally plots pretty sensible routes. Its very easy and intuitive to use. Overall, its my first sat nav and I love using it. Its not perfect though. It can take what feels like forever to lock onto a satellite and there are some glitches in the software (it became convinced I was in Guam and the only way I could find of rectifying it was to delete the Guam map - I can live without the map of Guam, but I still spent a frustrating hour trying to sort this out). And the power lead doesn't fit very well into the recharging cradle, and can very very easily get knocked out, which is a bit shoddy for such an expensive product. The main problem, however, is that it was shipped with a faulty car cradle which means I have to position the device so that it rests on the dashboard, which can be fiddly - so fiddly indeed that on a couple of occasions the cradle ended up not properly connected and the unit fell off the windscreen mid-drive. Fortunately the unit has survived these knocks so far. Tom Tom know about the problem with the faulty cradle and offer to supply a new one. However, you are required to enter the serial number via the website, and the website wouldn't accept mine (a common problem from looking at internet forums), so I had to email them. Although it is technically possible to email tom tom, the website is seemingly deliberately set up to make it as hard as possible (and you have to do it via the website or your correspondance gets bounced back). Clearly they would rather their customers didn't contact them. Once I had managed to email, however they did quickly get back to me assuring me that a new cradle would be sent to me if I registered my address details (which I did). Six weeks later, the cradle still hasn't arrived. So now I've gone through the whole website process again to email them to ask where the cradle is. Hopefully I'll have more luck this time. So, to summarise, a great core product but with some important flaws, especially the customer service (and I regard that as part of what I paid for). As things stand I don't think I'd buy a tom tom again, which is a shame.
Most useful gadget ever purchased June 30, 2006 G. Pearce (London, England, UK) 39 out of 41 found this review helpful
I previously owned the original Tom Tom Go, but the Wife keeps borrowing it, So I have recently purchased the 910. However I was concerned by some of the adverse reviews on Amazon. i.e. The mounting slips; it does not seat properly in it's holder; the unit keeps switching of whilst in use. I can state that I have noticed that the mounting requires turning to the second position for a firm fix, the first position allows adjustment, this may explain the issue of slipping for some users. I have had no problems with the mounting of the unit in it's holster, quite the opposite, it's pretty hard to remove it, practice I guess. And on the last point, the issue of it switching off on momentary power removal (a bump in the road, etc.) has been resolved with the latest software update; just connect it to the computer and update. In summary the original Tom Tom Go was an excellent piece of kit and I'm equally pleased with the latest model 910. I just can't wait to upgrade my mobile to take advantage of the bluetooth features. ;-) An excellent replacement for the original Go. Graham Pearce
Great Piece of Kit, But... July 27, 2006 Cary Sumpter 39 out of 42 found this review helpful
I had read all the other reviews before purchasing the 910 and discussed various issues with a local retail outlet. When I first used in my van, the unit kept losing the GPS signal, making it practically unusable. The conclusion was that the tinted solar windscreen in the van was deflecting the signal, although this issue was not made clear from the product description, or the initial advice we received from the retail store. Installation of an external antenna resolved this problem. However, with the 910, you now have the power cable, external mobile phone microphone cable, external antenna cable and further optional cable to link into the car stereo. It's therefore increasingly difficult to "hide" all these cables. After 4 days, the unit refused to switch on. From various phone calls, we found that the 910 is prone to do this, but simply needs to be re-set through the tiny button underneath the unit. Not exactly covered within the sparse instruction manual supplied. To this point, I had been pleasantly pleased with the mounting bracket, particularly having read all the other reviews. However, after 6 days the unit suddenly started "drooping" on the bracket, to the point that the unit had to be re-adjusted every couple of miles. The problem is not with the suction mount, but rather the swivel arm. We have had to exchange the unit and I am now having exactly the same issue with the replacement. In summary, the satnav is a brilliant bit of kit, but the mounting bracket lets the whole package down, to the point where it is just not fit for it's purpose. You would have thought that this issue should have been resolved by TomTom before marketing this unit.
Docking mount on 510 and 910 sub-standard May 21, 2006 M. R. Mason (UK) 37 out of 38 found this review helpful
I agree with previous reviewers. The new Tom Tom Go GPS units are fantastic... but the windscreen mount doesn't connect the power properly. I have just returned my second unit for a refund unfortunatly as it doesn't reliably charge when on the vehicle mount. Other than this rather major problem the unit is excellent. I got very surprised when it told me I had a new txt message and then read it out to me! The directions are clear and I had no problems with the routing from the south coast to Middlesborough, although one new part of the A1(M) was missing! The extra 910 features are also excellent and the MP3 works really well. Routing is fast and the MP3s play without delay. Check out the wide screen display - looks great in all weather, including bright sunlight. GPS has really moved forward since my old navman and garmin units. I will be buying another Tom Tom once the power/charging issue is sorted...
