A real pain in the backside August 5, 2007 Dr. Adam Jacobs (UK) 49 out of 54 found this review helpful
The software is fine once you get it working, but they couldn't have made it harder to get to that stage if they'd tried (well, maybe they did try). They have an "unlock" procedure before you can use the software, which, frankly, just doesn't work. Maybe they feel they need to have this to prevent piracy, although I'm not convinced. Anyway, even if they feel they do need it, it could have been made a lot simpler than it is. You have to enter an 8 digit code, connect up your GPS, and then click various buttons, only to be told that the software can't unlock because of an error. Eventually, I was able to unlock it by going through an even lengthier process on the Garmin website. However, by that time I'd wasted most of an afternoon when I'd really rather have been out walking. If Garmin want people to buy this, then they need to make sure that it actually works.
Mind-bending install October 16, 2007 D. Wight (Sheffield UK) 23 out of 25 found this review helpful
Frankly I thought my GPSmap 60 came with something like this ready installed - I felt misled. If you feel happy navigating with a 'Map' that looks like a blank screen to me then no need to bother with this! However once you fight your way through the jungle of 'un-locking' it is actually good and ups your GPS big-time. Just be prepared to have a fair bit of hassle unlocking - it didn't work like it says on the tin - I had to go to Garmin's website just as the previous reviewer describes - I didn't find the website easy either: I ended up fishing the box the GPS came in out of the bin in the rain to get the code off the box! It is worth it when you finish but Wow, Garmin - you could do a bit better - not slick, guys... not slick at-all!
To Buy, Or Not To Buy January 13, 2008 Ian McDonald (Kent, UK) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
No, I don't think I will. For that price I'd expect to have PROWs, as per OS Explorer Maps. I don't see much point in having OS maps on my Etrex if they don't show me where I can walk off-road; I might as well continue to carry my GPS and a paper map.
Missed opportunity from Garmin March 30, 2008 D. Tomey 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I also wasted much time trying to install this software onto a Vista operating system before ending up on the Garmin website and going through unlock process number two. Believing I could then start to use the pacakage, I quickly needed to resort to using the "Help" functionality - to receive an error message stating that the "Help" functionality was not actually compatible with Vista and not available; no help then! I had planned to use TOPO on the new Garmin 705 for mountain bike riding. The lack of detail in the mapping, such as rights of way, I believe makes it virtually impossible to pre-program a route to follow on the trail - especially important when one is looking to avoid trespass issues. I returned both the 705 and the TOPO software to the retailer for a refund. The 705 looked like a useful piece of kit. It's a shame I never got a chance to use it on the trail. The 705 would be useless "off road" without additional mapping, unfortunately TOPO just doesn't delivery.
No problems, great map December 10, 2007 D. S. Sivia (Oxford, England) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I've been using the TOPO Great Britain on my Legend CX for over a year now, and am still absolutely delighted with it. Unlike the other reviewers, I don't recall having any difficulty in installing and unlocking the map; perhaps I was just lucky.
