5 out of 5 stars Superb projector   June 15, 2009

Having recently built an 18 seat bespoke home cinema I needed a projector with a very long throw so that it could be mounted at the back of the auditorium and not on the ceiling above the audience. This limits the choice, particularly at the budget end. Having read a number of reviews, this projector stood head and shoulders above the competition - and the zoom range is simply tremendous, coupled with the ability to shift the screen image horizontally and vertically. With a throw of 7 metres, onto a 135" (3 metre wide 16:9) screen, the result is incredible. There is no trace of chicken wire effect and both upscaled DVDs and Blu-Ray disks are reproduced to pin-sharp perfection.

Downsides? OK it looks like something out of the 1960s. Don't worry about that, you want to look at what it does, not what it looks like. This is not a projector that you would want to set up temporarily or carry around - it is reassuringly heavy. Also it really needs two people to set it up to get the best - the reason being that the focus is a traditional ring around the lens rather than being coupled to the remote control (it's difficult to accurately adjust the focus when the image is 7m away!). But for a permanent, or semi permanent installation, then it's difficult to imagine a better investment - you could pay many times the price and only see a marginal improvement.

We often have friends come around and fill our new cinema. Like the previous reviewer, we have received compliments that the picture is actually better than our local cinema. Couple this projector with a decent screen (please don't cut corners there) and a respectable 5.1 or better sound system, and you're set for some wonderful entertainment!

What a fantastic piece of kit, enough said?
No, ok then,
First impressions out of the box, it's a big piece of kit, and is definately not going to win any style awards, but lets be honest, you're going to be looking at the screen anyway, so does it really matter?

I mounted it on the ceiling and it was quite difficult to manhandle it into position solo, as it's a hefty beast, but it can also be positioned on a coffee table, or shelf.

On first firing it into action, the sliding door, which protects the lens when it is off, is a nice idea and seriously cuts down on cleaning, something all projector manufacturers should integrate into their products.

On to the aactual picture. The sharpness and contrast of the picture on this machine is nothing short of startling. I upgraded from an Infocus X2, which is an award winner itself, but has a much lower resolution. The first thing I tried was the PS3 game "Motorstorm", the picture was stunning and to say that i was absolutely delighted would be an understatement. I next tried the film "Ice Age 2" (on Blu-Ray)The colours were bright and vibrant, the action flowed acress the screen with no obvious ghosting or streaking and there was none of the "wire mesh" effect that people say can be seen on LCD projectors.

The best recommendation I can possibly make for this projector came from my wife, who recently went to the movies with some friends. She simply didnt enjoy the movie, because as she put it "The picture quality was awful, compared to ours"

So, if you're thinking about buying this, do it immediately, you won't regret it!

This is a superb projector giving a great image with the minimum of fuss over placement and setting up , i keep trying different films in different formats just to see the result, movement is always smooth , blacks are displayed realistically and detail is superb and i don't even have a blu-ray yet !!

It is mounted high on the wall 7metres away from the screen and is coupled to a Onkyo 876 amp with 7.1 mission speakers set-up and a Paradigm sub, playing through it are a DVD player and the PC. Every night is cinema night round ours !!

This projector has rightly received many awards and although not the prettiest out there, the pictures it makes with Blu-Ray/DVD discs and BBC HD are breathtaking. Before buying it, my one concern was that my projection room is quite small measuring only 12ft in length - some projectors are not able to focus that close to the screen. That was no problem for the Sanyo - I get a fabulous bright and razor-sharp image measuring 70 inches diagonally (it could be even bigger, but then my current projection screen would have to be replaced with an even larger one to accommodate the image).

This is the second projector I've owned - the first being a standard-definition InFocus, which I bought six years ago. There has been a huge advance in the technology since then, and the pictures on the Sanyo have amazing depth and detail, with no problems with image movement. It is also very quiet - the fan noise is hardly noticeable, and doesn't intrude in those quiet sections of a movie. There is also an easy-to-navigate menu, and set-up is reasonably easy - though you will need a large table or wall/ceiling fixture, because it has a 17 x 17 inch footprint, including space for rear connector leads. As always with projectors, make sure your room is able to be properly blacked out, and that you leave some budget for a decent-quality projection screen (don't be tempted to project it onto a white-painted wall - you will be only getting 40% of the potential performance). With the addition of a good sound system, this offers a proper cinema experience and it has convinced my wife that there's no longer any need to go out for the movies, when movies can look this good at home. And if she's happy, I'm delighted.
