| Customer Reviews: Great for first projector October 22, 2007 Stephen C. Baird (London, UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a great projector for people who just want a plug and go device. Does exactlly what is say on the box, with a built in DVD , fantasic connection options, everything you ever likely to need and more. The built in 5.1 surround sound is great from the small speakers that are in the unit, of course if you plug it into a external AV unit you will get an even better experience. I have found the picture is not amazing however is certainly impressive enough on my 100 inch screen to make most people who see it go WOW! Try playing a Wii on a 100inch screen I think going back to my 42inch plasma is now so boring! 4 stars because picture not the best
Great all in one unit - does exactly what it says on the tin March 11, 2008 Scott Nicholson (Warlingham) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this unit with a little trepidation. I'd wanted a projector for a long time and was looking at the high end of the spectrum and full HD projectors costing around £3k.
However, this was a bit too steep and there simply wasn't the space to have a permanent home theatre in the house with everything that goes with that - a suitably placed screen, DVD, sound system, etc.
So, this unit, and the Optoma DV11, caught my eye and after much research I took the plunge on the Toshiba, mainly because of general brand reliability, the fact that the Tosh has a built in subwoofer, it plays DIVX files from CDs/DVDs and, most importantly, the short throw lens means it can go almost right in front of the wall, being so close to the massive picture that you can associate the sound with the image, something which I felt would be a problem with the Optoma DV11 where the unit has to be placed much further back from the wall.
It really is a fantastic unit. The picture is amazing. Yes, I'm sure there's much better and HD must be awesome but this picture is great. Perhaps my expectations of projectors were too low but I get such a buzz from seeing how clear, bright and accurately coloured the picture is. For the technical people amongst you, although the lumens (brightness) rating isn't that impressive, it is brighter than on a standard projector because the unit stands so close to the wall/screen. Watching movies in daylight is certainly possible, but you'd be better with the curtains closed. The only area where the picture is not wonderful is with computer inputs. You would not want to use this for powerpoint presentations, etc.
The sound is certainly acceptable, if not brilliant. Many reviews I found elsewhere on the web worried me immensely, since they made out that the unit's fan was as loud as a jumbo jet. It is not anything like that. In most cases I don't even notice it. It is like having a desk fan on in the same room. If you listen for it, you'll hear it, if you concentrate on the movie it'll be fine. The only thing that lets the sound down is some distortion at certain levels/frequencies which, again, just doesn't bother me.
This projector looks fantastic, is easy to carry from one room to another, takes minutes to set up and get going and is an awful lot of fun! Everyone who has seen it is pretty impressed. For this price it is an absolute steal.
Forget LCD or PLASMA - go bigger with a projector December 18, 2007 Euan N. Mackenzie (Edinburgh) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product is fabulous, Toshiba as ever have invented a great push forward in the home entertainment market. I can hook up my Freeview box, Nintendo Wii and use the integral DVD player to watch bigger than life images just like being in the cinema.
Why would you want a poxy 60 inch LCD TV at about £2,500 when you can get 100 inches easily for £600. It's a complete wonderbox. Design is even stylish in a black lacquer casing with blue LED function buttons.
Only had the product for 2 days but i must say i'm well impressed. Just waiting for remastered Star Trek films to really test the image quality and enjoy some real film and sound extravaganza in my mini home cinema.
The only annoying thing will be that in 3 or 4 months time Toshiba will probably bring out an HD DVD version. But i'll be enjjoying this projector for home use for a good few years.
Get one you won't regret it.
Great! If you're not an audio/visualphile or hardcore gamer November 22, 2007 Mr. P. M. E. Slight (England) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
Firstly I'm naturally annoyed that in the week after I buy this the price drops by nearly 50 quid, but what can you do?
Now, there are many reviews on the Net about the machine itself so I'll just boil it down to laymans terms.
The built-in DVD player can play DVDs from practically anywhere in the world (this includes my pirated DVDs I brought back from China) and as long as you crank the sound up the noise from the machines' cooling fans won't bother you.
The picture quality is good, I would say about 1.8 times better than your normal telly, as long as you keep the screen size down. This projector may be capable of projecting a 10ft-square image but it wasn't designed for that so the result is very blocky-looking/pixellated. Keep the screen size at a max of 2.5 metres (enough for anyone really and it's hard to get projector screens much bigger than that) and you won't notice any difference. Whilst this has an HDMI port for use with future HD products the built-in DVD player is, as far as I know, an HD one. Keep in mind that this is a compromise-based projector, or a jack-of-all-trades master-of-none, so even High Definition won't look as good as it could be.
My PC games look great on this thanks to the computer port (the blue one) but in order to hook up consoles you'll need extra leads.
As far as console gaming goes, BUY ANOTHER PROJECTOR! This projector suffers from something called 'gaming-lag'. If you don't want to Google that term it basically means that most PS2, Xbox and many Gamecube games have a delay similar to that you get with online games like World Of Warcraft when the servers get busy. With a CONSTANT lag of up to half-a-second this makes games totally unplayable, especially ones like Guitar Hero. The Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 are unaffected as they have options on the console itself to change the settings in order to match the projectors (The Wii however works fine despite lacking this option. No clue why. Keeping with the Wii, the motion sensor bar works fine as long as you somehow get it aligned with the middle of the projected image and naturally underneath it so remember to change the sensor bar position option in the Wii's menu). For the ET20 this setting is called 480p. Many older games are 480i or less.
You can get however around this by buying a device called a VGA Adapter. Complicated to say how it works but it fixes the problem. Trouble is the converters cost around £50 on top of the projector plus it may not work. Guess I'll just have to find out...
Cinema Picture with out the fuss! April 6, 2008 D. Howson (UK) I you like your films on the big screen then this is you new toy. The picture quality is very good up to about 1m from the wall which give a 100+ inch screen size which is good enough for most of us.
I'd say it has 2 minor let downs which meant it only gets 4stars from me they are:
1 The subwoofer is a bit lame and I'd purchas an active sub if you like your rumble and deep bass.
2 The HDMI is great but only 720 resolution but it's still very sharp even at maximum size (see comment above).
Other people have said the sound isn't great but I'm more than happy with built in 5.1 and the lack of speakers and wire trailing every where is a bonus.
Its small size meeans you can just pop it in the cupboard out site and it's pulg and play just switch on and go really. I've been using it as my TV to plugging into my TV box via HDMI and it's performed brilliantly. Hvaen't tried the games connections yet so I reserve judgement on lags some people have mentioned.
AT less than £600 quid it was a real bargain when you consider how much a projector, dvd player and surround system cost combined.
Definitely gets my recommendation.
