Product Description
The Tomy Walkabout Platinum Digital Monitor plays a key part in the life of new parents, making you feel secure in the fact that your new family member is being monitored and is safe.

Amazon.co.uk Review
This monitor is fantastic! After making the extremely hard decision to move our three month old to his own room, all i can say is that this monitor has been a god send!

Yes we're first time parents, and so at first you are stuck with the question of do you buy a monitor with night vision, with plates that you can monitor your babies breathing, or do you relax and listen to your friends that the more your monitor has the more you will worry! Well we listened to them all and opted for the Platinum!

Yes it monitors the temperature, but this is good for knowing exactly what to put your baby in to sleep -- will they be too hot too cold -- with this you know, it also has a light display which shows if your baby is crying, a vibration alert, and also you can choose to turn the volume up and listen to your babies every move. It really is great, we can hear our little fella sleeping from the comfort of our own bed!

The monitor also has a nightlight, a feeding/sleeping/changing timer -- which can be useful. It has a very cool function of talkback, so you can speak to your baby through the monitor -- a little freaky for a young baby but extremely good fun for scaring/freaking partners, friends and relatives!

All in all, this monitor is great, it really does mean you can have a good nights sleep! A yummy first time mummy--Amazon.co.uk

4 out of 5 stars Very good monitor   May 27, 2006

After trying numerous baby monitors, this is the best most reliable one I have come across. The sound is clear, it picks up babys breathing and you can hear it load and clear. Some of the monitors on the market that are digital, I found to have poor reception, poor batterty life, and not so crystal clear sound. This has been by far the best. I would recommend this to all if you are considering a reliable, quality monitor.

It has a beautiful blue starry night light and has loads of additional features such as 2 way talk, temperature monitor and many many more. The baby unit can also be portable which quite a few in the same price range do not. In my opinion this is the best.

Having had several baby monitors for my severally disabled, now adult daughter, who also has seizures, and having used analogue monitors, which are still in use and one digital monitor, which is also in use, whilest waiting for this particular one to come out, I can only say what the others have said, it really is the best one on the market, very loud and clear, easy to turn the sound down, very clear with no interference whatsoever, and much louder than the other digital monitor I have. I can highly recommend this one, whether it be for someone caring for an adult or someone with children. I also like the fact that I can communicate with my daughter. Money well spent, in my humble opinion. I have a second cradle with cable, so that I can charge it downstairs, the other cradle and cable is upstairs in my bedroom, so that I only have to take the monitor up and down the stairs. The other good thing is, if it is noisy, you have the possibility to have the monitor on to vibrate instead of sound, and you still have the lights showing when there is any sound. I say well done to Tomy for such a great product, the wait was worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Great sound quality and immunity to interference   July 17, 2007

We've been using this baby monitor for 8 months. Its best feature is undoubtedly the fact that it is very tolerant to interference. This is because it is based on DECT (Digital European Cordless Telephony), which has its own dedicated operating frequency band. Only DECT equipment is allowed to operate in this frequency band and the system is designed to avoid interference between co-located DECT units. Many other baby monitors use shared frequency bands, in which many different types of equipment can also legitimately operate. This is why they can be very susceptible to interference. You will read reviews from very pleased users who were lucky enough not to operate their baby monitor in close proximity to interfering equipment. You will also read reviews from people owning exactly the same baby monitor who have suffered terribly from interference resulting in dramatically reduced range or even complete malfunction.

The sound quality is excellent. The range is pretty good - from an upstairs bedroom I found I could go about 50 yards from the house before the link failed. You could probably get 200 yards line of sight (with no wall/barrier) but ultimately you need to be close enough to get back and address any problem so I think the range is fine. Some older buildings with very thick walls will reduce the range you can achieve significantly. The battery life isn't great, perhaps 4 hours if the parent unit is not in the charging cradle. Temperature display is useful and it confirms that the link is still good even if there is no sound to hear. The remote controlled light is a pain as you can easily switch it on by accident. We also found that occasionally (perhaps once a month) the parent unit got into a mode where the warning lights illuminated indicating loud noise but there was actually no sound at all at the baby monitor end. We found that powering down and back on cured this but it shouldn't really happen.

So in summary adequate range, great sound quality and immunity to interference but also a couple of minor niggles that mean it gets 4 stars rather than 5.

4 out of 5 stars Bad ergonomics but great sound   November 2, 2007

Thought i would add my comments (not a full review) as i have had one of these since Feb this year but there are some common issues people seem to experience

1) The design for the parent handset is bad, you cant stand it up on its own. So then you cant see the lights/ display at the dinner table etc as easy. Also if you have it in your pocket then its easy to press the talk or light button inadvertently. I think they should have recessed these.

2) When we got it, my son wasnt born yet. The day before he was being discharged from hospital i charged it for 16 hours or more. We didnt need to use it much off the charging unit at that point so we didnt notice until the last few months that the battery was only lasting 30-40 mins before bleeping and showing almost out of power.

So i called the Tomy careline (number on back of monitor) and they sent me a replacement battery to try. Did the 16hr charge again and now it will stay on full bars for 3-4 hours minimum so looks like they must have had a dodgy batch of batteries as this one has subtly different wording compared to the old one.

My advice is call them, get a free replacement battery and see if that solves your issues - they have a 2yr warranty on it anyhow.

Cant do much for the lack of ergonomics though. But the sound is crystal clear - if only they could find a way so you didnt get awful screeching feedback when you walk into the same room as the transmitter holding the receiver - this is a flaw of all equipment of this type AFAIK.

Thanks

4 out of 5 stars Good product but terrible battery life   July 26, 2007

Ive had this monitor for 4 and 1/2 months now and it is excellent. The sound quality is crystal clear and the additional features are fantastic (although being able to talk to the base unit is pretty useless - except to muck about with). My only gipe is that the battery is terrible. I dont know if I just got a duff unit, but unless it is kept on the charger it only has about 50 mins of battery life and this is reducing all the time. Luckily I am happy to keep it in the charger but this would seriously annoy me if I needed to go walkabout with it.
