Amazon.co.uk Review Jake Gyllenhaal's doe eyes and bulging biceps will make some hearts flutter in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Dastan (Gyllenhaal), adopted prince of the Persian empire, must flee into the desert when accused of murdering his royal father--but a glass-handled dagger he found as loot from a captured city turns out to hold powerful time-manipulating magic. Not only is he pursued by his vengeful brothers, his scheming uncle (Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast), and a strange cabal of assassins, but a princess/priestess named Tamina (Gemma Arterton, Quantum of Solace) wants the dagger back and will kill Dastan if she has to. Prince of Persia wants to be a rollicking adventure along the lines of Pirates of the Caribbean. Unfortunately, it's hampered by clumsy dialogue and hard-to-follow action sequences, with choppy editing that wrecks the flow of the parkour-inspired stunts. But the production design is extravagant and every time Alfred Molina (Spiderman 2) appears as a greedy sheik the movie gets a delightful jolt of energy. Gyllenhaal doesn't have much to work with--Dastan is a fairly generic hero--and whoever designed his hair should have been fired on the first day, but his lazy charm comes through and carries him through the movie. --Bret Fetzer

| Customer Reviews: Strong Action adventure August 27, 2010 Movieman (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very few games have made a successful transition to entertaining movie (Super Mario! Tekken! Streetfighter! Hitman!) but Prince of Persia joins a small band that manages the transition smoothly.
Borrowing heavily from the direction and photography of the game and with more than a passing nod to Assassins Creed, the film incorporates a strong cast, large scale scenes, free running, action, battles, a good mix of characters, humour, baddies dressed in black and of course the hate/love story.
The accents were all very English/American with Princess Tamina still sounding like a St Trinians Head Girl and Ben Kingsley looking as if he'd nipped over from the Thunderbirds set but that aside a very entertaining movie.
Much more enjoyable than Clash of the Titans, sit back and enjoy.
Great Watch August 23, 2010 Sweet Ice 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I didn't want to see this movie, but it turned out to be a good old-fashioned adventure movie, which blasts out fun and adventure. Great movie for the family.
A sandy, action-packed adventure with a lot to like. August 23, 2010 Twiss (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was impressed with this movie. There seem to be a lot of people who don't like it and I've heard a lot of bad stuff myself from friends etc . . . However, I have to disagree. This movie isn't the disaster many people make it out to be. I think the problem stems from people expecting it to be like Pirates of the Caribbean, but in the desert. Same studio and the way the movie looks can certainly put this misconception across.
All in all, the story is enjoyable. It has its moments where you wish the dagger would stop getting lost or stolen but that's just the way they've done it. It's supposed to be a fun kid's adventure and that is what it is. The effects are nice and not overdone and I loved the sets and costumes. Acting is good - not meant to be Oscar winning stuff - in a fun, light-hearted kind of way. Jake Gyllenhaal is a convincing lead and pulled off a role I was expecting him to fail miserably in.
The kids will love this movie. You'll probably love this movie. Don't be put off by a few bad reviews.
At last. September 2, 2010 Joel Clark At last, a game movie thats worth watching.
I am so pleased with this as i wasnt sure what to expect.
It has a great cast although i wouldve liked it to have been darker like the games.
Well worth buying.
Very polished and satisfying popcorn adventure, in the old style. August 25, 2010 Stokie Dave It's difficult to believe some of the other Amazon reviewers actually saw the whole movie. Seemingly taking its cue from the Errol Flynn swashbucklers of the 1920s and 30s, this film turns out to be hugely enjoyable as popcorn adventure-entertainment. There's certainly no deep intellectual/emotional content, and no dark grit like Solomon Kane, and thankfully the obligatory tedious 'luv' interest scenes are kept to a bare minimum. In fact, it's all quite silly - but in the best possible fun way. Kids should enjoy it immensely, although it is rather long. As befits a videogame franchise film there's lots of action, stunning settings, likeable characters, a good dash of humour, solid action-adventure style acting and great stunts. Having seen rubbish like Clash of the Titans recently really I wasn't expecting much. But I liked it, and would watch it again. What's not to like? The Hassassin sect leader bearing a passing resemblance to Darth Maul from Star Wars, and his posse being a little too much like the Riders in Black from LoTR. People saying "little brother" one too many times, which is one of the memorable lines from LoTR. LoTR visual/dialogue references in action films are beginning to be annoying, they take you out of the film, and one to many of them can ruin films - such as in the end of Solomon Kane for instance. Another thing I don't like is this UK DVD cover. Whichever marketing-goon plumped to have that exact cover should be sacked - I won't spoil the film for you, but you'll understand why after you've seen the film. Thankfully I saw the film with no preconceptions and no reading-up on the plot first - and I think that's really the best way to see it. Possibly those who were disappointed had seen trailers and read plot-spoiling reviews first, and so knew most of the story in advance? That's not the best way to see a film like this. I suggest you don't read anything about the plot, or read anything into the promotional visuals - and you'll have a great time watching it first time around.
