Amazon.co.uk review

One of the first things a viewer notices about Cloverfield is that it doesn't play by ordinary storytelling rules, making this intriguing horror film as much a novelty as an event. Told from the vertiginous point-of-view of a camcorder-wielding group of friends, Cloverfield begins like a television soap opera about young Manhattanites coping with changes in their personal lives. Rob (Michael Stahl-David) is leaving New York to take an executive job at a company in Japan. At his goodbye party in a crowded loft, Rob's brother Jason (Mike Vogel) hands a camcorder to best friend Hud (T.J. Miller), who proceeds to tape the proceedings over old footage of Rob's ex-girlfriend, Beth (Odette Yustman)--images shot during happy times in their ex-relationship. Naturally, Beth shows up at the party with a new beau, bumming Rob out completely. Just before one's eyes glaze over from all this heartbreaking stuff (captured by Hud, who's something of a doofus, in laughably shaky camerawork), the unexpected happens: New York is suddenly under attack from a Godzilla-like monster stomping through midtown and destroying everything and everybody in sight. Rob and company hit the streets, but rather than run with other evacuees, they head toward the center of the storm so that Rob can rescue an injured Beth. There are casualties along the way, but the journey into fear is fascinating and immediate if emotionally remote--a consequence of seeing these proceedings through the singular, subjective perspective of a camcorder and of a story that intentionally leaves major questions unanswered: Who or what is this monster? Where did it come from? The lack of a backstory, and spare views of the marauding creature, are clever ways by producer J.J. Abrams and director Matt Reeves to keep an audience focused exclusively on what's on the screen. But it also makes Cloverfield curiously uninvolving. Ultimately, Cloverfield, with its spectacular effects brilliantly woven into a home-video look, is a celebration of infinite possibilities in this age of accessible, digital media. -Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Utterly outstanding- an instant classic   June 15, 2008

Cloverfield is quite terrifying. I've never seen so many people run screaming out of the cinema before.

There's been The Last Broadcast, The Blair Witch Project, The Zombie Diaries, Welcome To The Jungle, Rec, and Diary Of The Dead. Therefore, you'd expect the 'supposedly real, found video camera footage' genre to be a bit worn out by now; but then along comes Cloverfield- the best of them all.

Many have criticized it for having no proper plot (enormous monster attacks New York- hmm, sounds complicated) and having bad characterization and whatever else- but those people have probably totally missed the point. Cloverfield wants you to feel like you're actually experiencing what you see on the screen, to have those feelings of immense confusion, fright and disorientation... and that's exactly what it does.

The Blair Witch Project finally has competition in its genre. Endless other additions have attempted to surpass it through use of zombies, cannibals, ghosts, you name it- but the reason why they've all failed is because the acting was not convincing enough (especially throughout the excruciatingly bad The Zombie Diaries), and acting is basically the key to make these films work. This is where Cloverfield excels; forget the stunning special effects, the cast are who I praise for most of Cloverfield's incredible success.

(Just a quick word of warning: don't -as I did- get the 2 disc edition hoping that the alternate endings will be totally alternate! That's all I'm saying.)

At the end of the day, be assured that if you look up the word 'amazing' in the dictionary, you'll find the word 'cloverfield'. It's head and shoulders above 99% of other recent horror movies, covering up its massive flaws with (as another reviewer has described as...) "plain spectacular awesomeness".

This really is just what cinema is all about. So believe the hype: Cloverfield rules.

Yes I saw the teaser attached to the Transformers movie. Yes I thought it looked amazing. Not only did I type 01-18-08 in my search engine, I was sad enough to be embroiled in the whole viral market prior to release. It was refreshing to go to the theatre and watch a movie I knew nothing about. I followed the online marketing for six months and I was really expecting this thing to flop and turn out to be a right turkey! And for all the information, fake clues and fake reviews, I read prior to kick - off, I knew nothing more than the title really.

I am not a Godzilla fan, nor did I find the recent Godzilla movie any good (in fact it was really pants). I was surprised in myself, because this movie is not my thing. However when the movie started I was blown away. It felt pretty real. The way it was shot and the sheer panic that ran through the 1 hour 24 minutes. If you suffer from motion sickness though, this is not the best advised movie. Saying that, on the small screen via DVD this will not present a problem.

So the movie starts with a leaving party, everything goes to plan. The usual love object and a lost opportunity, convince the main charachter to accept a new job and move to Japan. Still, everything continues for the next 20 minutes like any other movie. Suddenly the Big Bang, Choas, Military, Dark Under ground sequences, and a huge 'thing' trampling and eating everything in sight. This is by no means based on a true story, and anyone wanting a piece of reality would and should watch Sense and Sensability or something priodical like that.

Cloverfield is a roller coaster ride through a roller coaster city. All that turned upside down with confusion, chaos, panic, sheer terror, normal obscure and irrational human behaviour. This thing keeps you on the edge of your seat, it makes you run every step of the way with the cast, and your heart will beat like you have taken part in the London marathon!

The movie itself does not revolve around the monster! It does centre around a rescue mission for a missed opportunity. Critics had mixed reviews, but if you were to replace the monster with any current intense and fear emitting situation, they would have called it the next Saving Private Ryan.

But it isn't, its fun refreshing and a blast. At parts you chuckle, in parts you hold your breath. You end up trying to peer around the egde of the screen for a better view. It is new take on an old story and it works. There is a buzz of a sequel, as nothing is explained. You may think it sounds wierd that a monster turns up and the trashes the place without any questions or answers, but this whole movie revolves around the real fear of the majority when disaster happens.

This will not change your life, but it will take you for a wild ride!

When i first watched this movie, i felt a bit disappointed but that is the case to nearly everything in life that is hyped too much. This is something i fear will happen when i travel to Egypt next month as well, i will probably look at the pyramids and think to myself "is this it?".

Anyways my point of the story is that I wasn't very sure of the 'monster' and i left the theater with a bit of something missing. However, when I got home and started to think more about what I just watched I became really obsessed with the idea and wanted to view it again in the cinema just to make up my mind.

I can say now that I definitely feel slightly different about the whole movie. I thought it was great to start with but now I appreciate it more and think it's a very special and unique movie. It's something that I would have been very proud of if I created. I always think of scenarios, whether i am on the bus, train, plane, in bed trying to sleep. Imagination is a beautiful thing and Cloverfield in a way crosses that field.

The style it was filmed is genius, simple but is brilliant and is why the movie is so great. While i was watching the trailers before the movie, i realized there are already a few movies coming out with hand-held effects. I'm not saying they are copying Cloverfield but you can tell how everyone wants to experiment with that sort of directing now. I don't think many will succeed like this movie did in what it represents.

The whole media and rumors that were going around before the movie was released make it even better now. I can't really praise the movie any more than what I have already. Just go watch it and be open minded as this is a movie you must see in the theater if anything at least for the great sounds used.

Ps. Watch your right hand screen at the end, you wont want to miss this.

Superb film that had me glued to the screen and for once regret that i didnt go and see it at the cinema!
If you have a nice home theatre setup with nice large screen and dolby surround or similar, Im sure this will be one of those films you put on to show it off to your mates.
I'd love to go into more detail but as I'm writing about the parts I loved about the film Im having to delete them again so I dont spoil the story! I think the best I can say without giving anything away is that the characters are done well and act and react just how you would imagine you and your closest friends would in similar circumstances. The idea behind the way this film is presented has been around before (blair witch used a similar technique) but theres a real sense of being right there in amongst the panic and chaos this time and you really run with the characters, more so than in other films of similar type. Id say there were quite a few moments where I thought "jesus that WOULD be terrifying" or questioned how I might react which I think speaks volumes on the realism side.
This is an incredibly hard subject matter to produce a "seriously scarey" movie on without coming off as either too gory or just plain silly. Cloverfield somehow manages to give you a roller coaster ride with some great thought provoking(and a little fear inducing!)scenes and events. Its a cool film and I think it will go in my list of major recommendations. I also loved the last scene with the "blink and you'd miss it" evidence!! Great from start to finish.
