Amazon.co.uk Review Will Smith stars in the third adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic science-fiction novel about a lone human survivor in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by vampires. This new version somewhat alters Matheson's central hook, i.e., the startling idea that an ordinary man, Robert Neville, spends his days roaming a desolated city and his nights in a house sealed off from longtime neighbours who have become bloodsucking fiends. In the new film, Smith's Neville is a military scientist charged with finding a cure for a virus that turns people into crazed, hairless, flesh-eating zombies. Failing to complete his work in time, and after enduring a personal tragedy, Neville finds himself alone in Manhattan, his natural immunity to the virus keeping him alive. With an expressive German shepherd, his only companion, Neville is a hunter-gatherer in sunlight, hiding from the mutants at night in his Washington Square town house and methodically conducting experiments in his ceaseless quest to conquer the disease. The film's first half almost suggests that I Am Legend could be one of the finest movies of 2007. Director Francis Lawrence's extraordinary, computer-generated images of a decaying New York City reveal weeds growing through the cracks of familiar streets that are also overrun by deer and prowled by lions. It's impossible not to be fascinated by such a realistically altered cityscape, reverting to a natural environment, through which Smith moves with a weirdly enviable freedom, offset by his wariness over whatever is lurking in the dark of bank vaults and parking garages. Lawrence and screenwriters Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman wisely build suspense by withholding images of the monsters until a peak scene of horror well into the story. It must be said, however, that the computer-enhanced creatures don't look half as interesting as they might have had the filmmakers adhered more to Matheson's vampire-nightmare vision. I Am Legend is ultimately noteworthy for Smith's remarkable performance as a man so lonely he talks to mannequins in the shops he frequents. The film's latter half goes too far in portraying Smith's Neville as a pitiable man with a messianic mission, but this lapse into pathos does nothing to take away from the visual and dramatic accomplishments of its first hour. --Tom Keogh

Great! January 27, 2008 Mr. R. C. Auty (England) 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
I know a lot of readers of the original book will be diappointed by this film. However, as a film, and purely on that basis, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Will Smith is my favourite actor, so that helped and he is one of the few in today's pack that can carry off a difficult, virtually one man role like this because of his superb screen presence. So on that basis I give it five stars even if it is a bit flawed and has a few continuity issues.
Good film, more horror than sci-fi though February 20, 2008 S. Johnson (Manchester, UK) 15 out of 21 found this review helpful
I've not read the book or the other film, so I can't compare and I don't want to. People seem obsessed with comparing when a film is made from a book; of course it's different, but look beyond that and you'll find a great film here. I did enjoy this film, but I was hoping for more sci-fi than horror / thriller, but it certainly kept me gripped and time flew by! As for Will Smith, he can be annoying in his stereotyped roles, but here he holds the film brilliantly and is not annoying at all. I was expecting a typical Hollywood ending, but was pleasantly surprised. Not a classic, but a good film worthy of your money........and more importantly, worthy of your time!
I've got a problem with this movie... I read the book first March 10, 2008 Mr. M. K. Gungaram-smith (East-Yorkshire, UK) 6 out of 14 found this review helpful
About 3 years ago someone recommended I read the book "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson. I read it and was gripped by the plot and the relevance of the name to the twist in the story at the end. If you've read the book you'll probably accept that the ending to this film bares more resemblance to an earlier movie adaption of the same book, under the name of "The Omega Man" (starring Charlton Heston as Robert Neville), than the book. Whilst the movie does work for me on some levels, and I enjoyed it as a movie in its right I was left with an empty, disappointed feeling that they felt the need to make the end far less bleak and, for want of a better word, Hollywood-ise it, by removing... well the real meaning to the movies name. I won't give it away! If you haven't read it, read the book! That's not to say this film is bad! It's just a disappointment! For me a major pro was that, for the most part Will Smith managed to pull off playing Neville, something I was unsure he would manage, a role with no wise-cracking, and whilst it would have been nice to see him face the nightly taunts of the infected as he did in the book, or the slow build up and desperation for friendship in his relationship with the dog (in the movie called Sam and their from the start), I can certainly imagine how a movie might fail to capture, certainly the latter of those! Overall... OK but it should have stuck to the book more for a grittier story!
Amazing concept, shame about the CGI April 9, 2008 rustymagoo (UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Having not read the book or seen the other film i was able to approach I am Legend with quite an open mind and take it for what it was. For anyone that has seen 28 days later it is very similar in concept to that - the desolate street scenes are absoutely amazing - to see New York as a wilderness with deer and lions roaming and Will Smith driving around in a Chevvie is no easy feat. I would say that the film definitely crosses a few different genres of film from the disaster movie angle to horror and sci-fi. There are a couple of scenes which are pant-wettingly scary - I dare anyone not to be scared by the amazing acting of Will Smith as he wanders into the pitch black in search of his dog and we see glimpses of the virus for the first time! The only let down for this film is that all of the infected have been created using CGI; and the standard isn't that amazing - especially when you consider the amount of money spent on making this film in the first place! All in all though, well worth a watch and definitely worth having on blu ray to watch from behind the couch and/or cushions!
Wow!! This is a Powerful Performance by Will Smith April 21, 2008 R. Hallett (UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I watched this thinking it might be a light-hearted Independence Day type performance by Will Smith. I watched this and have GREAT admiration and respect for Will Smith. Its one of the most powerful performances I have ever seen. He makes you feel what it likes to be there and identify with him. This is one of the most disturbing and powerful films I have seen in years. I spoke to some friends and family about the effect this film had on me. They have reminded me it's just a Film, and it could never happen. If it should ever become reality, I don't want to be the last person left. The agony that this person portrays/suffers in the film is quite overwhelming.
