Amazon.co.uk Review To some extent, the team behind the revival of St. Trinian's were on a bit of a hiding to nothing. The old films, contextualised by a far different age, were knockabout, energetic, yet innocent comedies about the antics of a boisterous girls' school and its inhabitants. Surprisingly though, the remake--again inspired by the Ronald Searle cartoons--manages to sidestep the bulk of the obstacles in its path, and proves itself as a likeable, entertaining comedy. The plot of St. Trinian's is as paper-thin as you'd expect, and serves merely as a platform for the anarchic actions of the cast of characters (some hokum about stealing a picture and saving the school). And a mischievous lot they prove to be: while they don't quite live up to the memories of the generation of St. Trinian's students before them, the primarily young cast still attack their roles with tremendous, and infectious, gusto. And leading the cast is Rupert Everett, in an entertaining duel role at St. Trinian's headmistress Miss Frinton and her brother, Carnaby. Joined by Colin Firth, he's clearly having a whale of a time, and his casting process a wise decision. It's great to see the always-wonderful Celia Imrie in there, too. St Trinian's, as you'd expect, has plenty of problems, notably a script that relies too much on the charm of its cast to pull it through. But heck, it's still fun, and a hard film not to enjoy. It won't win Oscars, but it will put a grin on your face. --Jon Foster

Hilarious March 11, 2008 ML Jensen (Bath, UK) 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
I went to see this film with my thirteen year old son - at his urgent request. I didn't expect to enjoy it, having never been a fan of the old films, but I was so wrong. We both loved it. It was hilarious. I laughed and laughed. I thought the contemporary teen scene was done with tremendous humour and flair. The stealing of the painting didn't interest me so much, but the film carried it and we left the cinema thinking it had been a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon. Long live British films. Can't wait for the dvd now.
great and lighthearted January 30, 2008 jenny (cardiff, uk) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
This was a great film, lighthearted, sexy and funny and silly in all the right ways. Full of fun antics it also shows that girls can rebel and have adventures as well as guys.

St Trinians - The 2007 film is a stunner, the actors, the sets and the film plot. It is a film that can be enjoyed over and over again, and has a definite flavour of escapism for those filmgoers who want to spend 100 fun pact minutes in another world - Brilliant.
Disappointing, but not a disaster... February 20, 2008 P. R. Nokes (Ipswich, Suffolk, UK) 10 out of 20 found this review helpful
I didn't have high hopes for this film but was, on the whole, pleasantly surprised. On the plus side the story was well-paced, kept things interesting and had some good characterisation in places. Also, there were some good performances (most notably the headmistress, Rupert Everett aka Miss Frinton). It was mildly amusing and entertaining throughout, but never really laugh-out-loud. What I didn't like though was the attempt to modernise or trendify the film to appeal to a younger audience. Some scenes were particularly cringe-worthy such as the girls having a make-over and when they were walking towards an art gallery to steal a painting - these scenes were more like adverts for hair products than what I'd expect to see in a comedy film. Also some modernisation included drug use (which seemed a bit over-stated and at times a little tasteless), though the different social groups of today (such as Goths and Trendies) added a bit of diversity to the girls. Some of the lesser characters with small parts I found their performances were rather dull and under-developed (compared to the supporting characters in the original films). The Brit comic Russell Brand was notable for doing very little for the role he played, arguably anyone could have been in that part and it would have made little difference on screen. (Perhaps Ali G would have been a better choice for playing this part ?). There were some attempts at parodying other recent films, such as Entrapment and Oceans 11, but whereas films like Scary Movie use this to good effect this film seemed to miss the opportunity. Also I noticed that visually it wasn't very exciting and this was largely due to unimaginative direction and photography. For example, there was one scene that involved a hockey match with a rival school. This could have been so much better with a little imagination - e.g, bits could have been slowed down and done in black and white with the music from Raging Bull playing as the carnage is unleashed and looks of terror on the rival girls faces - but no. Someone like Barry Sonnenfield who did MIB and the Addams Family films could have made this film a real treat. Overall then this was arguably saved by the story and some strong performances outweighing the many small weaknesses and flaws. Was it a disaster ? No. Could it have been better ? Yes, much !!
There is no fun to be had with this film April 15, 2008 cheekywench84 (uk) 7 out of 30 found this review helpful
I cannot get over how many stars you lot have marked it so far! Shame on anyone for finding this pile of trash entertaining! It is out of date, sexist, not funny, cheap, exploitative rubbish with 'chavs' living it large in a well to do looking school that has more antics going on than a jail is total tripe I would not let kids watch this! Is a perfect film for sleezy men who want to see young girls parading around in tart clothing!!!!!
