Just what we were after. November 4, 2007 Brian Carson (London UK) 57 out of 64 found this review helpful
Well this will make a great Birthday present to myself. Yes I have to admit that I was also tempted with ASIN: B000AAF9Q0 but I always believed it was overpriced. Now we have a even better product at a Fair price and as its my Birthday later this Month I am going to pre order it. ## Important - a few days ago the price was 70 and all of a sudden the price has shot up to 120 so its unclear what is going on - my comments relate to it being on sale at 70 - its now jumped to 199.99 which would be unbelievable if anyone bought it at such a price - its unclear why the price has been going ballistic as other Companies are selling it at a ' fixed price ' so really Amazon are not doing themselves any favours ## Price was only part of the equation I was also concerned over Disk damage and ASIN: B000X41AY8 appears to be better put together. Decisions, Decisions... October 26, 2007 C. Cousins (London, England) 53 out of 60 found this review helpful
Well, should I buy this set which has the movie included and better looking packaging, or the 'shoe box' catastrophe without the movie, for almost 100 pounds more? D'oh! To quote the wise sage. If you've forgotten how great this series was (as I did) try to catch a repeat on sky/cable/digital. I watched the movie recently and remembered how I had looked forward to the weekly episodes and 'ooohed' whenever the smoking man appeared revealing his machinations behind another nefarious cover-up/scheme. I had forgotten Mulder's wry humour and Scully's methodical debunking of his theories (in the beginning). I have to say it was like catching up with old friends and realising, with shock, you still like them. When the set arrives I'll update this to include what the DVDs are ACTUALLY like. But as it stands I see no reason not to buy it - unless of course you've hated it from the beginning in that case I believe 'Navy Seals' is on sale. EDIT - The set arrived 24 November. I'll describe the packaging and content as I'm sure most of you know what the series is about. The DVDs are in multi disc plastic cases, seasons 1 to 4 each have seven DVDs the seventh are bonus discs, seasons 5 to 8 have six DVDs the sixth being the bonus disc and season 9 has 7 discs the sixth and seventh being bonus discs. The movie is in a two disc Amaray case, disc two has the bonus features. You also get a special collectors booklet which has a short recap of each season then a very short synopsis of all the episodes and a list of where the bonuses are for each season and the movie. They come in a large hardboard box with the DVDs spine out, the film and collectors booklet are slotted between seasons five and six. I prefer the way the US set is presented plus they get more bonus items.
Compelling contender for best TV show ever November 5, 2007 russell clarke (halifax, west yorks) 48 out of 51 found this review helpful
There are 201 episodes of the X Files , plus the movie .The show originally aired on September 10th 1993 and finished on May 19th 2002. Created by Chris Carter( He wrote the show after hearing 3.7 million Americans claimed to have been abducted by aliens), the show cleverly mixed genres dealing with science fiction - the existence or not of extra terrestrials is the shows defining theme, but it has elements of horror, spirituality , procedural cop thrillers and of course massive amounts of conspiratorial conjecture. The plot for the pilot episode has FBI agent Dana Scully ( Gillian Anderson) assigned to be the partner of the agency's investigator of the paranormal Fox Mulder (David Duchovny). Shuffled out of the way in a basement office Mulder is a "Believer"-nicknamed "Spooky" by his colleagues- with a filing cabinet full of incidents of supernatural or alien activity -the so called X files. Scully is a sceptic , plus it transpires that she has been placed with Mulder so she can report back to her superiors so they can keep a cap on any of Mulder,s findings. One of the show's less than credible aspects was Scully's continuing cynicism in light of what she see's and experiences but she has a strong faith ( faith is a continuing sub plot of the show) and is also a doctor (medical) so also seeks scientific rational for what she encounters. The series instigated the concept of a continuous mythology running throughout the narrative series to series.-namely that of alien interaction with humanity, government cover ups and abductions, with Mulders sister Samantha proving a progressive facet These are dubbed "Mytharc" episodes . The others are the "Stand Alone" or "Monster" episodes which can be viewed by casual viewers without reference to the continuing narrative. These provide some outstanding episodes with "Ice" , Beyond The Sea"( The first episode to concentrate on Scully) and "Excelsis Dei" up against light hearted fare like "Humbug". The other on-going aspect to the show is the relationship between Mulder and Scully . The dichotomous nature of their affiliation drew almost anal scrutiny from the shows fans ( Or "X-Philes" as they became known). Despite their disagreements over the nature of their work a bond grows between the two and they constantly seem on the cusp of something more physical , thankfully something the shows writers resisted. . The supporting characters - Fox and Mulders immediate superior Walter Skinner( Mitch Pileggi), The shadowy Cigarette Smoking Man(William B Davis), the duplicitous Agent Krycek (Nicholas Lea) the anti-government "Lone Gunmen" ( Who also got a spin off series that bombed) the enigmatic "Deep Throat" (Jerry Hardin)and the "Alien Bounty Hunter" ( Brian Thompson)to name a few of the many are all beautifully realised and often get episodes that provide more insight into their characters . The last two seasons saw Mulder mysteriously disappear so Scully is allocated a new partner John Doggett(Robert Patrick) after he fails to find the missing Mulder in "Manhunt" and in neat role reversal he becomes the sceptic before Scully is fired from the FBI and replaced by Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish). This took a little of the momentum out of the narrative but Scully keeps a connection to the past and of course Mulder returns to ties things up at the conclusion of season nine. The inclusion of the movie(Made in 1998) is a nice bonus. The film is like an extended episode with a bigger budget( No surprise there) and ties neatly into the "Mytharc" , even elucidating some aspects of that continuing plot-line. There are numerous commentaries and interviews to expand and inform on the X Files mythology which is a convoluted and absorbing one and a god-send for pedants . The X Files is a hugely influential show. It led to a sort of spin off series "Millennium" (Excellent) and "The one Gunmen"(Less So) but its influence can be seen in numerous contemporary series like "Lost" , "Supernatural" and "Heroes" where continuous plot threads and multi-character story lines occur. At the time of its final episode The X-Files was the longest running sci-fi show ever on American TV, a title since lost to Stargate SG-1. The show was declared by TV Guide to be the second greatest cult television show (Star Trek being number one) .The second X Files film is in pre-production and it will be fascinating to see where the writers go with that. Until then this box- set provides an excellent value chance for those that haven't to completely acquaint yourselves with this superb TV series and for long standing fans who haven't already to own the X Files outright. Either way it,s essential viewing .

I bought this set, as many no doubt, while it was one of the "Offers Of The Week" on Amazon. The set arrived today and on first inspection seems in perfect condition. I won't go into the history of the show as others have covered that far better than I ever could. I watched the Seasons One and Two originally on BBC2 in the mid 90's and loved (most) of the episodes. I will admit that my attention started to wane at the beginning of Season Three and so from there I literally lost the plot. Just under two years ago, Amazon and ahem...Play started offering the season boxsets for some ridiculous prices (around a tenner at one point), so I bought the first six and enjoyed catching up on the adventures of our Two Heroes. Time catches up on you, like time does and I never got round to buying the last three seasons. I've watched the price closely on Amazon and seen it rise and fall. In the meantime, I'd sold my DVD boxsets on eBay and Amazon Marketplace and had built up a nice little kitty. When I saw the price drop yet again for the Offer Of The Week, I acted quickly and purchased. Being an Amazon DVD renter I got an extra 5% off too, which was nice. Thumbs up to Amazon too. I ordered on the 9th with Free Super Saver and received the set today (14th), so delivery was top notch. Oh yeah, the show! It's fantastic!
There's definately something strange going on... February 27, 2008 D. C. Johnson 5 out of 13 found this review helpful
...with the boxset I received from Amazon. It arrived very quickly which was great. I discovered that Season 2 Disc 1 was missing so after contacting Amazon they sent me a free replacement. Again, superfast delivery. The replacement boxset had the Season 2 Disc 6 missing!!! I'm either extremely unlucky or there's some kind of coverup keeping me from finding out the truth lol. Overall though, GREAT series. I never watched it when it was on TV so when Amazon released this set at a great price I thought why not! Has anyone else had the problem of missing discs?
