Phenomenal comedy duo who are worth all the success they get!! September 6, 2007 M. Faulkner 48 out of 56 found this review helpful
If you haven't heard of Flight of the Conchords already, you can do no worse than to check out this DVD. If you love dry, surreal and ridiculously intelligent comedy/music panaches, then Bret and Jermaine are the men you seek. Think the non-sensical ramblings of Bill Bailey, crossed with the sudden musical outbursts of The Mighty Boosh, and mix it all up with a naive attempt to break it big in the States, one sicophantic and crazy fan, and a hoard of miniature disasters! By the way, I'm not superb at writing reviews, but I hope you get the idea!
Motherflippin Genius October 26, 2007 John Fraser (St Albans) 23 out of 26 found this review helpful
Every once in a while a comedy series comes along that seems to rewrite the comedy rule book while making you wonder "how come no-one's ever done anything like this before?" The Flight of the Conchords is one such series. In a way, it's a great throwback to the musical format - people breaking into song in the middle of a conversation for no reason - and the humour that can be had with that conceit alone is immense (the moment when a song kicks off is always very funny.) But the structure and sheer hilarity of the songs (on the one hand pitch-perfect parodies of specific genres of songwriting and on the other, a mixture of deeply inappropriate lyrics and inventive surreality) bears repeated scrutiny and really is tears-streaming-down-your-face funny. It's also worth pointing out that the New Zealand accent certainly seems to add an additional layer of comedy to a lot of it. That and Jermaine and Brett's relentlessly deadpan delivery. Glorious stuff. bring on series two.

This show is every bit as good as you have heard and the comedy genii behind it deserve all of the 5 star reviews they get. But this DVD release is a massive disappointment for fans. There are no extras of any kind. Not an interview, not a single commentary and certainly not the HBO stand up comedy special. You can down load some good little interviews and some great 'Mel' video diaries as podcast, surely it wouldn't have cost much to at least include those in the box set? By all means buy this DVD for the brilliant comedy, but if you recorded the show then this isn't worth gettiing. Let's hope HBO don't make the fans wait 10 years for a more definitative box set of this excellent show. Let me say it again - 5 stars for Flight of the Conchords! 1 star for vanilla DVDs! BTW if you're a FoTC fan don't miss Jemaine Clement in the movie Eagle Vs Shark. You won't be disappointed.
Innovative cult comedy October 10, 2007 Ray Blake (Hemel Hempstead, UK) 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
Think of the mockumentary style of 'Spinal Tap' combined with the surreal musical comedy of Bill Bailey and the slightly claustrophobic domestic arrangements of Morecambe and Wise. These elements combine to make something genuinely original. Bret and Jermaine are unconventional heroes, but heroes nevertheless, a couple of socially awkward New Zealanders trying against the odds to make it in New York. Their exploits and those of their amateur manager, Murray ('I'm so angry I could almost swear.') and their fanbase (a rather unhinged woman who is more of a stalker than a fan) make for a succession of laugh-out-loud moments. You are unlikely to find a funnier American sitcom this year.
Flight of Conchords - just buy it September 18, 2007 Neil Trueman (Brighton, England) 8 out of 31 found this review helpful
being from the Python/goons era and in to The Office, Extras, Little Britain, Bo Selecta etc etc - i think I am qualified when it comes to reviewing comedy....so when I say THIS IS VERY FUNNY - IT IS !!! Saw it in USA August time and it really had me laughing all the way through. Lots of things go wrong and the 2 main characters here are absolutely great together and you will not be disappointed. I dont rate many american comedy films, and often think their sense of humour is non-existent.....i.e. "not funny" - but this is bound to be a classic in years to come. but dont take my word for it.......
