Jack and Victor: taegether again for the first time! May 28, 2006 John Smith (Lichfield) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
What changes brought by time, what benefits. It wasn't so long ago that Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill, the show's creators and stars, fought with the suits at the BBC for a wider release. Ford and Greg won, and have not only won, but defied their expectations for the show, trouncing their opposition in the ratings. Now, the series enjoys not only a general release but a surging popularity, both sides of the border. You may not have been there at the start, dear buyer, but you can ride the growing wave of Still Game fever with this timely BBC-backed re-release. SG has to be the funniest, truest and most effortlessly observed comedy since Phoenix Nights. SG is simple, warm, sad, and desperately funny, and often all at once. It never devolves into some kind of gritty, social-issues series, wallowing in its own Relevance. My favourite episode is 'Cauld' where Winston runs a scheme for free leccy. It includes this exchange between Victor and Jack - (You've no idea how many people I've heard from south of the border who repeat this exchange almost word-perfectly!) If there's a better comedy out right now than SG, it must be something very special indeed. (If you like this, you might like SG's parent show, Chewin' the Fat, and the live play.)
A must-own DVD for comedy fans July 17, 2006 M. D. P. Meechan (Glasgow) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
Still Game is perhaps the best comedy series currently being produced by British television. The fact that it has reached a fifth series and is now shown nationwide (having run in Scotland since 2001) is testament to the success of the show, and its ability to remain consistently funny after five years on air. Scotland's production of comedy has ranged from brilliant (Stanley Baxter, Scotch and Wry, Rab C Nesbitt) to downright dismal (Meet The Magoons, Snoddy), but Still Game firmly restores the nation's comic credibility, mixing huge laughs with character development and engaging storylines. For viewers who didn't manage to see the show from episode one, these DVDs are essential purchases!
The best comedy for years August 21, 2006 Mr. D. Mace (Kent) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Still Game is the best comedy the BBC has produced for as long as I can remember, it has superb characters (Winston being my favourite) and it also has that certain something that all great sitcoms have. The comedy is effortless, sometimes dark but laugh out loud funny. I now own all of the first 4 series on DVD and can't wait for the 5th to be available. If you love great comedy such as One Foot In The Grave / Only Fools & Horses / Phoenix Nights etc, you'll love this
Where It All Started! November 16, 2007 DL Productions UK (Merseyside, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Greg and Ford are Victor and Jack, two guys who've known each other for years and have become best mates. They live in the suburb of Glasgow, Craiglang, and they don't really think much of it. They have a lot of friends, Tam, a mean so and so; Bobbay - the landlord of the pub; Navid, a grocer; Winston, who finds joy in annoying others; and nosy Isa, who knows everything about everyone in Craiglang. Some great episodes on this disk, including the episode where Winston decides he wants to fiddle the electricity; the one where Jack and Victor try and recoup everyone's stuff from a dead friend's house and the one where everyone falls over the ice outside the flats. Very good comedy, I like their humour, and the fact it's not filled with malice like a lot of comedies now. You'd obviously not be able to show this to the kids if you're concerned about swearing, but otherwise it's just plain fun. Jack and Victor work well on screen, and I'm glad Ford and Greg managed to get a programme after "Chewing The Fat", as it's really funny. The support roles are great and really do make a great programme. Definitely worth getting on DVD; or get it for a friend/relative as a gift. The only reason why it lost a star was because there are no extras whatsoever which I think is a bit poor. Otherwise this is excellent!
