A Great Film February 10, 2003 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Ok, this film won't make you think, and it won't leave you thinking about it for days afterwards. However, it will, if you're anythign like me, leave you crying with laughter. Jason Statham, who has acted very well on Snatch, provides 2 of the funniest moments in film history with his goalkeeping antics. Me and my friends all agree on this. U need to see the football match at the end. The commentary by Bob and Bob is also absolutely halerious, and worth the price itself. The rest of the film is also very good, but the highlights come from the last about 30 mins, in the form of the football match. Classic! a must see!!
classic humour November 11, 2003 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
If you're in the mood for mindless entertainment that will make you laugh spontaneously and not require indepth thinking for hidden meanings, then this is film to watch. Totally switched off from daily life and had a really good laugh. The match at the end is brilliantly funny - especially the commentators Bob and Bob. Up there with Snatch, Lock Stock and Sexy Beast.
If a girl can like this football film, it must be good! May 18, 2005 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I thought this film was fantastic. A really strong cast, full of characters. I thought Vinny Jones was especially good, funny with some sensitive moments and displaying some great football. The rest of the cast were perfectly chosen without exception. The governor, the wardens, the other inmates, each character really shone on screen. A brilliant all-round performance. The football match at the end is immensely enjoyable and commentary is pure genius. If a girl like me (who can't stand/understand) football) can watch and rave about this movie it must have something going for it. Before the other-remake of The Longest Yard comes out I'd watch The Mean Machine first. What can I say? GOAL!
Awful tripe May 3, 2003 Ludovic Noir (London) 6 out of 22 found this review helpful
That this film is a remake of a fairly average Burt Renolds film is bad enough. But that this film is probably the most cringe worthy piece of garbage I've ever had to sit through is even worse. The performances are terrible. Vinnie Jones is embarrassing. The film looks washed out and dreary. Avoid this waste of time like the plague. I want my money back.
I prefer 'The Longest Yard' May 19, 2003 marwood 6 out of 19 found this review helpful
Burt Reynold's 'The Longest Yard',on which this is based may have been dumb but it had Reynold's charm to carry it.Vinnie Jones just doesn't have the same appeal as that old scamp Burt. That's not to say that this isn't a funny film-there are some genuine laughs, but very few of them come courtesy of Jones. The rest of the cast being mostly seasoned troupers seem to have a great time and deliver their lines perfectly. This needs an injection of old-time Ealing charm, something which seems sadly lacking in this and many recent British comedies.
