Amazon.co.uk Review A massively underrated action thriller which kept Schwarzenegger occupied between blockbusters, Commando may be one of the last shoot-out films ever to have real characters in it. Not, of course, that they're anything other than stereotypes, but they're painted with such detailed, positive strokes that it's impossible not to relate to them. Arnie plays a retired military special-ops officer whose daughter (played with an expert balance of cute/feisty by Alyssa Milano) is kidnapped by the baddest of bad guys, who'll only hand her back as and when he's assassinated a tiresome banana-republic president on their behalf. Needless to say, Arnie is deeply annoyed by this, rescues the moppet single-handed amid more bullets and explosions than you can shake a stuntman's pay cheque at, and... well, why spoil the fun by revealing any more? Co-star Rae Dawn Chong gets some nice one-liners as the innocent bystander who gets caught up in the mayhem. The DVD comes with no additional features at all, but who needs 'em anyway? --Roger Thomas

Edited DVD February 13, 2002 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
The DVD is edited and true fans of this film should stick to the VHS. I was very dissapointed to see some of the best action scenes totally taken out of the film.
Brainless but fun old-school action June 4, 2003 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
For some strange reason, this tends to be a film that gets overlooked in favour of films such as Predator and Red Heat when people think of Arnold Schwarzenegger films of the 80s and early 90s, which is a bit of a shame, as it’s not at all bad. It has the standard action movie plot, i.e. retired military man has to rescue his kidnapped daughter (now famous in her own right, Alyssa Milano from TV’s Charmed), but for ninety minutes, it’s a lot of fun. The most enjoyable part of Commando is the sheer over-the-top scale of it all. Arnie literally takes on a small army single handed and comes out on top. Seriously, the bodycount must run to three figures, and our hero doesn’t even suffer a scratch. It also has some classic Schwarzenegger one-liners (“I let him go”, “Let off some steam, Bennett”) and, providing you’ve put your brain into neutral for the evening, you can’t fail to be swept along by it . However, one nit-picking problem with this DVD release is that it has been cut. Apparently, this is due to executives in Germany where the film was released with a lower censor’s rating, but the rest of Europe all just used the same pre-cut version, so some scenes are noticibly trimmed. This is a relatively minor problem, though, and doesn’t take too much away from the fun going on on screen.
Another edited for TV Arnie movie July 23, 2001 fehya@aol.com (U.K.) 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
Yet another disapointing release. Like 'Predator' I found myself looking more for the edits than watching the film. After only about half an hour with at least two major cuts I turned the movie off in disgust. The sound and picture quality is also only average. My advise to true fans is DO NOT buy this film on DVD. Buy the tape, its cheaper and a more complete version.
RE-RELEASE THIS FILM September 18, 2006 M. Jones (UK) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
I felt ripped off!! scenes have been cut out of this film and it really shows in some areas!! do they do this to make extra money then re-release a full version later on? remember the first time Predator was out? that was all cut up in areas! and they said it was a mistake with producing these dvd?? rubbish! because I know people like me ended up buying the next version which was so much better!! you never expect to buy a cut version of a film on dvd! 2 arnold films have had this as far as I know? scandal!! even Slys Rambo triogy has its picture chopped down, its true!! and now you can get the proper versions from the USA! once again, they rip you off then they get you to buy future releases because they know you love these films! they never tell you beforehand that theres going to be cut down versions :(
