Amazon.co.uk Review
Horror series Supernatural delivers some of the most satisfying small-screen scares in recent memory. The premise is deceptively simple: brothers Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki from Gilmore Girls and Jensen Ackles) travel the darker corners of the American landscape in search of their father, who's gone missing while hunting the malevolent forces that lead to the death of their mother. In the course of their search, the siblings encounter a host of otherworldly creatures, including vampires, ghosts and witches, as well as such distinctly American phenomena as the urban-legend favourite the Hook, monsters from Native American mythology and fearful figures from well-known children's games. Supernatural's integration of elements from American pop culture and folklore, combined with its skilled cast and crew (creator/co-writer Erik Kripke delivered 2005's Boogeyman, while director/executive producer David Nutter is a veteran of The X-Files and Millennium), and better-than-average attempts at atmosphere and suspense place the series well above the other spookshow programs that arrived on TV screens at about the same time (Invasion, Night Stalker), and should hold considerable appeal for fans of frightful fare. The six-disc set contains all episodes of the second season, with commentaries, making-of documentaries, a brace of unaired scenes and a gag reel completing the set. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars One of the best shows on TV   September 28, 2007

So season one was great, but season two was absolutely, 100%, out of this world. Many TV shows fail to live up to their first series (Lost anyone?) But Supernatural's second season out does it's predecessor providing us with more scares, thrills and this time it brings the tears too. This season also had me in stiches, particular episodes to note are 'Tall Tales', 'Hollywood Babylon' and 'Folsom Prison Blues'. The boys are on top form too. Ackles, particularly stands out though with his brilliant comic timing and heart wrenching family scenes. Padalecki also brings the goods, showing many more sides to the sensitive Sam we all love, the general character development is fantastic! Another episode to note is 'Heart' at the end of which you will be sobbing and marvelling at the great acting and chemistry between the two leads.
Definitely buy this season because it is the best show on air at the moment! Similarly to the season 1 boxset, there are not as many extras as i would have liked, however the commentaries and other various goodies are worth a watch and the gag reel will definitely have you laughing!

4 out of 5 stars A Proper Show   September 22, 2007

In this age of manufactured boy bands and special effects laden tat, I steered away from Supernatural solely because of its marketing tagline of 'supernatural gets sexy' or some such pith. I suspect it put many traditionalists off, which was a huge marketing mistake. That said, I stumbled upon it one evening on ITV and watched it. The thing is, Supernatural is a very good show - gritty, solid, well-acted with good storylines, its milieu is personified by the 1967 Chevy Impala taking centre stage alongside Ackles and Padalecki - muscle, black darkness and plenty of chrome. Add a Rock music backdrop, and two traditional 'hunters', although the studio has obviously had its input into the desperate attempt to appeal to the masses, the show has not lost much integrity. The cinematography is really very good, the presentation slick and pleasing and the special effects not predominant but well-crafted enough to add to the show rather than dominate it. The modern take on traditional Otherworldiness - ghosts, vampires, demons, magic and psionsics (for example) is adriot and intuitive. All are well-rendered and believable within the genre. Characterisation is good - of the main players, who are not one-dimensional which is so easily done within the boundaries of Sci-Fi, but also the bit part players who re-appear sufficiently to add to the general feel of reality. The only criticism is that it feels like a hesitant 4th gear rather than full-blooded hurtling to top speed - the main storyline is introduced right from the outset and burns solidly in the background for the entire season but does not really get going until the last few episodes. The one story episodes are good and do not feel like fillers however. The second season certainly steps up a notch with some significant surprises. There is potential here for something rather good and I don't think anyone inetersted in Sci-Fi and Fantasy shows will ever be disappointed by this one.

The Second Season really does step up a notch and starts to find its feet more so than the first. It promises more and delivers very well but again, I am still left wondering if they could have taken more risks and achieved more. Perhaps Season 3 will provide those answers and a darker, more introspective show will await us...

Ticked Off

I am very keen to add this wonderful show to my DVD collection, but once again I'm left confused by Amazon's lack of information on product. So...does this set contain a 'gaggle' of special features or not? There are no features listed in the product information on this page. But the official Amazon review just a few paragraphs down claims it's chockful of them. Which do I believe? As the inclusion of special features is important to me, I won't buy here in the UK till I know which it is. So come on, Amazon! Give me the information I need to buy!

...and hoping to all the gods that I get it in my stocking, la la la. Or should that be oo-la-la? Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have maintained their sex appeal (sorry to be so lowbrow) while not relying on their looks to do their acting for them in series 2. I would wish for this box set if only for the episode where Dean does his Hey Arnold (football head) impression -- a good example of the series' take on the supernatural and the balance it has consistently maintained between humour and conviction. But, hey, if I get the rest of the episodes as part of package, I'm not going to complain.

The series ending was slightly cloying and the rather convenient re-appearance of a character from the previous series (unmentioned lest I spoil it for those who haven't seen series 2) felt contrived -- a somewhat disappointing end to a cracking series, but not so disappointing as to let down the whole. And, to be honest, it's hard to think of an alternative to what they finished with. I have fervent high hopes for (1) a generous benefactor -- this set is a bit steep at almost 30 -- this Christmas or on my next birthday and (2) a series 3 to come.

I loved the first season and was pleased to see that a second was released - though I hated waiting sooo long for it to be released on DVD!!! None the less, I love watching the show and I'm glad to add it to my DVD collection!!!

In reply to 'Ticked Off', who wasn't sure if there were any special features, Yes, there are some special features (deleted scenes, 2 commentaries, gag reel, Jared's Original Screen Test, Webisode Gallery and The Making Of All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2). The only problem is, I can't find the featurette on the making of All Hell Breaks Loose pt 2. I've checked all 6 discs and i'm currently unable to find the damn thing!! So if anyone can help with this, then please, please, pleeeeeease do!!!
