Stunning. March 30, 2006 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Record Of A Tenement Gentleman is a truly beautiful and incredibly moving film. It has a similar story to Walter Salles Central Station, grumpy old woman looks after kid unwillingly. Tokyo Story is the film everyone talks about when discussing Ozu and that is without a doubt his masterpiece, but this film and Good Morning come very close in my opinion. I've seen a number of his other films and enjoyed them all but I could see how some may find them slow and difficult to watch. Give these films some time and you will be deeply rewarded.
A charming, heart-warming film August 22, 2007 E. Sanders (Manchester, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I put off watching "The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice" for ages, because I know that Japanese films can feel slow-moving to those of us more used to the Hollywood style of film-making. This film is no exception in that it moves at a gentle pace, but I was delighted by it - it is a charming, touching and humourous study of marriage(s) within one extended family in '50s Tokyo: the little white lies and compromises that are made in order to keep a husband and a wife rubbing along together in relative harmony. It also shows how the attitudes of the younger generation towards marriage and personal freedom were changing. A rewarding film, and a pleasant change from the more masculine, martial films of Kurosawa and the like.
Ozu October 19, 2008 Mr. G. Sturdy (Yarm, UK) 2 more Ozu clasics - though these titles are perhaps less well known than Tokyo Story and the 'Season's' tiltes. A shame as these are perhaps 2 better examples for an introduction to Ozu. They are far-more story driven than usual and follow, if anything, the Hollywood pattern of film-making. I love 'Flavour of Green Tea...' it's very, very funny which often bypasses many critical reviews. Anyone involved in a long-term relationship will find themselves giggling knowingly. Anyways, if you want a good starting point for an introduction to Ozu, but felt they may be a bit too high-brow, these are a good starting point. Highly enjoyable.
