Amazon.co.uk Review Superbad, for many, was the surprise hit of the year. Yet when you consider the comedy pedigree sitting behind the camera, perhaps it's not that much of a turn up. Director Greg Mottola, for instance, cut his teeth on episodes of Arrested Development and the underrated US show Undeclared. Co-writer Evan Goldberg has credits on the US Ali G show, while his partner in scribe is Seth Rogen, star of 2007's other breakout comedy, Knocked Up. And with that film's director, Judd Apatow, also on the production team, it's understandable to see where Superbad gets its quality from. Yet in spite of all of these names behind the camera, Superbad is powered by Jonah Hill, previously seen in mainly supporting roles, as the foul-mothed Seth. In conjunction with Michael Cera's Evan, he bursts his way through a film that sees the pair of them trying to buy booze to go to a girl-filled party, before they go their separate ways to college. Hill and Cera are strong in their lead roles, and keep Superbad motoring even through its quieter moments. But the scene stealer has to be Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell, or--courtesy of his fake ID--McLovin. When he encounters two cops, played by Rogen and Bill Hader, comedy gold swiftly ensues. Superbad isn't as consistently funny as Knocked Up, and its running time may outstay its welcome a little, but it's still a tough film to knock. It's simple and straightforward aim, to sit on your screen and generate plenty of laughs, is comfortably achieved, and its rewatch value is high as well. Well worth a look. --Simon Brew

SUPERGREAT November 23, 2007 Mr. Mv Stott 11 out of 18 found this review helpful
The best comedy I went to see this year; just really funny and warm with fantastic characters and performances all round. Cant rate this highly enough, unless you dont like laughing; in which case Id avoid at all costs.
Super. Bad. February 25, 2008 B. 11 out of 24 found this review helpful
Every teen cliche & lame-duck joke imaginable rolled into 2 hours of mind-numbing tedium. Michael Cera was the only redeeming feature & even he should've known better...
Great fun March 26, 2008 A. Serrano (Zaragoza) 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is not Schindler's list so don't expect anything with a good story , this is just the story of 3 teenagers trying to buy alcohol in order to be popular with girls and maybe get laid. What follows is a something in between American Pie and South Park , the main character ,Seth , is inspired in Cartman ( fast foul mouth ) and he is both funny and annoying. The secondary characters are also very funny and Michael Cera provides a bit of romance in the movie. The 2 cops are the most surreal part of the movie to the point of nearly ruining it. This is an overall 4/5 movie entertaining and funny and full of rude jokes. The Extras are almost useless , the outtakes are not as amusing as the real movie.
A fitting name for a super bad movie November 15, 2007 KM (England) 9 out of 26 found this review helpful
'Superbad' begins when two highschool geeks are invited to a party when a girl finds out they have got a fake ID, so that they can buy everyone alcohol. The geeks' friend unfortunately has put the most unbelieveable name on his ID and is then part of a liquor store robbery, leading him to a night with two fun-loving cops whilst the geeks are getting themselves into their own trouble. I'm not a big fan of teen American comedies (perhaps I'm a little old now that I'm 25!?) but have seen a fair few and this one is one of the worst of the lot. With only the McLovin'/cops scenes being mildly amusing, the rest of the "story" relies purely on foul language and sex-related humour, which wares thin within the first 10 minutes. I went to see this movie based on the good reviews it got, but I really cannot see what those reviewers saw in this film as it wasn't funny really at all. A big let-down and one I wouldn't watch again. Maybe worth watching once it comes on on Sky TV.
Fantastic November 23, 2007 L. Lemon (England) 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
I don't dispute the other reviews of this film, it is definitely one that you'll either love or hate but if you're a student or recent student and have experienced anything like the story of these guys which applies to nearly all students then this is the funniest film you will ever see in your entire life! My friends are still using quotes from the film and if it strikes a chord with you then you will love it more than anything. However I do see that if you have no stories that are like the characters, especially if you've never spent time in the US, then you will not get this film at all, but if you have its amazing! Rent it and see if you like it or not!
