Picking up six months after the end of Skins' maiden season, this second series maintains the terrifically high standard set by the first. In its basic form a drama about teenagers, the trick to Skins is that it sidesteps the many, many cliches of the genre, and instead offers gritty, quite brilliantly written television. What's more, Skins is viewing that pulls no punches. By turns very funny, gripping and dramatic, it picks up the story of a group of under 20s in Bristol, dealing with issues of religion, sexuality and sex, among others. But it does this through a cast of three dimensional characters (each facing tough challenges of their own), suitably well realised by the primarily young cast. A selection of guest stars, including Harry Enfield, Bill Bailey and Shane Richie also appear. But is the second series of Skins better than the first? Yes, not least because it's willing to take risks, to evolve and darken the narrative a little, yet still remember to put its characters at the fore. It's still a show that may baffle an older audience, but stands as a shining beacon as to what Channel 4 can achieve when it backs proper British dramas. Roll on series three. --Jon Foster

Don't be fooled - this show is bloody brilliant March 7, 2008 Mr. David J. Cashin (Manchester, UK) 14 out of 19 found this review helpful
The words 'teen drama' carry a huge stigma with them. Most people will see it as something not worth bothering with. Shallow, fluffy, two-dimensional, lots of sex, drugs and booze and not much plot - at least, that was what I thought until I bought the first series on DVD and realised what I'd been missing out on. And if Series 1 was good, then so far, Series 2 is out of this world. Don't be fooled - this show is genius, giving even the most mainstream of quality television dramas a run for their money. Intelligently written dialogue, compelling storylines, well thought out and developed characters with depth and clever plot twists all contribute towards the making of this wonderful show. The critics have been falling over it and this is why. Only Skins could get away with a musical about Osama Bin Laden "blowing them away". Buy the DVD and fall in love with the show which continues to be underestimated by so many.
still great - but quite dark / sadden compared to series I May 17, 2008 Philipp (Germany) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
really enjoyed watching series I when I stayed in the UK for half a year; now I almost finished watching series II on dvd; acting and story line improved compared to series I, but it also became much darker and sadder - so don't expect a feel good tv show - series II really can bring you down if you're in a bad mood. don't get me wrong, it's absolutely worth watching and brilliantly done but I think it would have been even more fun to watch with a stronger focus on the friendship with a bit less drama (People dying) and more funny stuff. looking forward for series III although I don't know what to expect as they're about to swap the whole cast (which I don't think is a good idea as the old one is really really likeable and made Skins). hopefully series III it will be less sadden :-) for the meantime i'll continue with Shameless which is great too; (sorry about my English but as I'm from Germany I can't do any better :-))

Disappointing April 23, 2008 Mr. G. R. Johnston (Cambridge UK) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed the first season and tried to keep the faith whilst enduring what could at best be described as an 'ordinary' follow up season. Cassie just becomes a pain to watch, shoddy story lines and not a patch on the fantastic first helping of this potentially cult drama. Hopefully the third season will redeem the program and this will just be a blip on a great show. Soundtrack remains awesome.
GUTTED May 21, 2008 JAKE'S MIX 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
I absolutely loved series 1 one of Skins. found the rawness, humour and storylines awesome. I think it was written really well, and every week I couldn't wait for the next episode. This series was such a massive let down. The plots were a disaster, the characterisation was non-existent - we learnt hardly anything new - old storylines were never concluded - even the title music was pathetic! I soon realised why, they had some 19 year old lad writing the scripts (no diss respect to young up and comming writers) who lacked experience - he didn't even have dynamism in his writing, which could have been a reason for his employment (I'm still yet to find one.). The reason this is two stars instead of one, is the actors. Was cast beautifully, and the performances were as good as they could have been with a poor script. Such a let down. Don't bother buying - watch the re-runs if you feel you have to.
