Amazon.co.uk Review Simon Pegg is clearly, right now, someone who can do little wrong at the box office. Run Fatboy Run follows hot on the heels of Hot Fuzz, and again finds its star delivering a quality comedy turn, in a film that boasts a good few laughs too. Directed by Friends star David Schwimmer, Run Fatboy Run casts Pegg as a security guard fed up of being outrun by the people he's supposed to catch. He's also determined to try and prove to his ex-fiancee (Thandie Newton) that he's a changed man, and thus decides to take on the London Marathon, where he'll be up against the new man in her life (Hank Azaria). Pegg is on good form in Run Fatboy Run, and genuinely delivers a character you want to root for. Yet it's the supporting players who walk off with the plaudits too. Dylan Moran in particular is in great form, as is Harish Patel, while the likes of Thandie Newton, Hank Azaria and David Walliams also turn in good work. Cleverly knowing not to outstay its welcome, and only occasionally stuttering under the weight of some laboured work behind the camera from Schwimmer, Run Fatboy Run is an easy, quite funny and light on the brain comedy, that helps cement Pegg's growing status as a quality leading actor. Worth checking out. --Jon Foster

Good Fun November 10, 2007 sainte-carmen (London) 18 out of 25 found this review helpful
If you're a fan of Simon Pegg, chances are you will enjoy this film. He plays a loveable loser ably assisted by fine cast, including Dylan Moran. It's not an overly slick film, but it does hang together nicely. The story is good and the comedy is gentle but consistent. There are quite a few laugh out loud scenes, but it is not in the same league as other Pegg productions. A good choice for a quiet night in.

There arent that many good comedies around these days that I find myself waiting for the DVD release date so that I can buy it, to watch over and over. This however, is one of them. I saw it at the cinema and was expecting a reasonable funny film but not on the scale of Shawn of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. I was wrong though as this measures up to both of them very favourably. OK, in real life, the chances of a slightly overweight man keeping up with an experienced fit marathon runner are zero but I can forgive the writer that as the rest of the film is packed with funny moments and funny characters e.g. his Landlord. This film is well worth buying and I certainly am. I even look forward to the out-takes as you always et the feeling that the actors have fun making these films.

Im shocked this movie has been so well reviewed. I thought it was terrible. For a start Simon Pegg's character isnt even fat thereby rendering the title obsolete. The plot is contrived and insulting an there isnt more than a few feeble jokes in it. I sat in the cinema stoney faced whilst everyone around me laughed out loud and I have no idea why. This isnt because I have no sense of humour I could just see what few jokes there were coming a mile off. Equally the Nike sponsorship was explicit, which I cant really overlook!!! It seems that Simon Pegg could star in the phone book and people would assume it was funny. Dull!!!!!
Charming April 19, 2008 B. 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
After reading all the negative reviews I had low expectations going in. That said, I really enjoyed Run, Fat Boy, Run. The jockish, locker room humor was kept to a minimum, and what we were left with was surprisingly funny & fresh. Simon Pegg plays an affable security guard convinced he has nothing to offer to the girl he loves but left, pregnant, at the altar five years prior. He's an attentive, if misguided at times, father who fears he's about to lose everything he holds dear to another man - played wonderfully by Hank Azaria. Never finishing anything in his life, he sets out to prove to his ex-fiancee he's changed man by running a marathon. Not an easy task for an out of shape layabout. Surprisingly (I really wasn't expecting much) I found the film to be equal parts sweet, charming, funny and silly. Ideally I'd give it a 3.5 rating, but in lieu of that I'll go for 4 stars.

I was looking forward to watching this. What with the "good reviews", the potentially interesting storyline, and Simon Pegg. I mean, lets take the story. Bloke leaves wife at alter pregnant, five years later hes fatter, unfit, and full of regrets. Could be interesting. Personally I was looking forward to how they could show the transformation of a man from unfit 30something to marathon runner and the comedy triumphs and tragedies along the way. I was also, I hate to admit, looking forward to a bit of rom-com for that is what it ultimately is. However I cannot believe I was taken in by all the hype. The storyline has been stretched to implausability (How could he hope to run a marathon in 3 weeks?). The supporting cast have all the hallmarks of "modern Brit Flicks"- ie over egged racial stereotypes. The landlord, for example, was particularly cringeworthy. And how did the American guy turn nasty so quickly? Absolutely awful. There are so many holes in the story and its all so clunkily put together I really seriously cannot believe how bad this is... Having said all that I suppose if you like over hyped bad British comedies (Bend It Like Beckham, East is East, Love "Actually".... ) then you'll probably like it.
