The greatest complete - at last! September 27, 2007 D. Wright 55 out of 59 found this review helpful
Well, as I predicted in an earlier review of Steptoe, the BBC have now made all the Dad's Armys available in one box, having made sure we've already bought them individually over the past couple of years. They know mugs like me will fork out all over again in order to get the 3 Christmas specials which weren't previously available. Okay they can be bought separately, but who's going to give up the chance to have all the episodes of perhaps the greatest comedy series of them all in one handy package? The 3 Christmas specials are: 'Battle Of The Giants', 'For The Love Of Three Oranges' and 'My Brother And I'. The latter, where Arthur Lowe plays Mainwarings's disslolute brother, is incidently one of the great Dad's Army episodes. It's annyoying that, so many years into the DVD age, they've only just made all the existing episodes of this sublime comedy available, when so many lesser comedies have been available for ages. They did the same with Only Fools and Horses and One Foot in The Grave; releasing them complete with some specials after spending years releasing them individually, and I see they're also doing this annoying practice with Steptoe and Son and Hancock. I wonder, now that they've released everything they can how they will continue to re-sell us what we already have? What's to bet in a few years these series will be re-released yet again in 'collectors editions', which just means different packaging, as they did with Fawlty Towers and Blackadder? Mind you the Steptoe series could definitely do with a few extras!
EXCELLENT BUT .. October 27, 2007 Mr Frank Lee Bland (Rockferry) 48 out of 49 found this review helpful
You all know this is one of the best British comedy sitcom series ever. But why are the BBC treating it`s DVD reissues so poorly ? Several Dad`s Army stalwards are still with us - Ian Lavender(Pike), Clive Dunn(Jones), Bill Pertwee ( Warden ), Frank Williams( Vicar ), Jimmy Perry( writer ) , David Croft( writer / producer ) . It`s frankly a travesty none of them were asked to provide some commentary on some episodes or interviews . The BBC produces some excellent DVD packages ( Doctor Who dvd`s are crammed full of extras including commentaries , past and present interviews , features etc ) but when it comes to Dads Army they clearly dont give two hoots. Dads Army 10/10 BBC DVD reissue department 3/10
Can anyone confirm what extras are on this set? November 10, 2007 Tars.Tarkas (UK) 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
Can anyone who owns this set tell me if they are the same discs as the previously released series sets. Do they have the same extra's? For instance, the second series had the radio show versions of the 3 missing episodes on the previous release, along with a documentary called Missing Believed Wiped. Also I believe the Christmas Specials Set shortly coming out will have some clips from the Christmas Night with the Stars clips featuring the Dad's army cast. Are they present here? Finally, are the Christmas Specials uncut. (On the Steptoe and Son set the Christmas Specials were edited) Any information would be really appreciated...thank you.
Disappointed... March 30, 2008 Leslie Syree (West Yorkshire, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have just taken delivery of this boxed set of Dad's Army, and found that although on the box there is a complete list of the episodes contained within the fourteen discs in the set, there is nothing on the discs to show the real content thereon. Despite some discs being marked "the complete series" you will find that that series is divided over TWO discs, but there is no listing of which episodes are contained in the two discs. I have found it necessary to compile my own individual listing for each disc and apply a label to that effect. I am very disappointed and feel that the Producers of the set could have done better, as my old schoolmaster used to say... Of the visual content of the discs, of course, that is a VERY different matter!
All inclusive! April 6, 2008 J. Theobald (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
To answer a previous reviewers question, this box set contains all the episodes available previously and the program 'Missing Believed Wiped' as well as audio versions of the remainder of series 2.
