Amazon.co.uk Review
Racking up impressive box office numbers right across the globe, the arrival of The Simpsons Movie onto the big screen proved, for many, to be more than worth the wait. But with its DVD release, there's a compelling argument that Springfield's finest have come back to their natural home.

The film itself is primarily Homer-centred, with the head of The Simpsons family seemingly consigning Springfield to certain doom when he dumps his waste where he shouldn't. But, in the true spirit of the show, the plot takes a relative back seat to the antics of America's first family.

And it's those antics that offer the film's gold. As you'd hope, it boasts several laugh-out-loud moments, from visual gags (the rock and hard place being a favourite) through to the by-now infamous Spider-pig. There's not quite enough material to keep the chuckle counter going for the full duration of The Simpsons Movie, and the criticism that it's effectively three episodes strung together has some truth to it. But you'd still be hard-pushed to complain for one key reason: The Simpsons Movie is grand entertainment, with plenty of rewatch potential.

So while you can add us to the queue of people who wanted more Mr Burns, and while it doesn't quite measure up to some of the show's best episodes, The Simpsons Movie still delivers, and does it with some quality. And Spider-pig is a work of genius…--Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Everyone's favourite family has finally reached the big screen   September 7, 2007

Well it has taken 20 years of patience, speculation about wheather it will actually happen and then anticipation about how good it will be. I must say I have always loved 'The Simpsons' since I was very young however I have found their last few seasons rather dissappointing when compared to the old classic ones. I mean who can forget the one where it spoofs up the film 'Westworld' when the Simpson family go to Itchy & Scratchy Land and the robots go out of control as well as the one where Mulder & Scully from 'The X Files' make appearences. Classics.

Now, after those dissappointing last few seasons, I must say that even though I heard 'The Simpsons Movie' was written by the original writers, one couldn't help but slightly worry about if it was one film spin off too late. I needn't have. This film is hilarious with Homer alone, even though other characters make it funnier. It was one of those cartoon feature films from TV to big screen that goes very well indeed.

The whole 'Spider-pig' was, to me pointless, but hey this is Homer Simpson we're talking about so that made me laugh as did the flashback scene where Homer takes Bart fishing as did lots of other things. Brilliant.

Trust me, if you are a fan of 'The Simpsons' you'll love this film. What was also great was that a fair few celebs provide their voices for cameos. See it.

I'm going to start by disagreeing with the majority of people who wanted nay demanded a full 90 minute hysteria thon: it IS a movie and so we expect to see a storyline along the way. If the movie were to be stuffed full of gags, something would have to give and the story would suffer accordingly. Listen to any of the commentaries on the TV box sets and you will hear the writers state time and again that as well as having laugh out loud moments they are also most concerned with giving the series and characters real emotional heart . Go back to the movie and watch it again with this in mind. Laugh hysterically at Spider-pig but also watch Marge's heartfelt message to Homer when the family reach Alaska. Enjoy Bart's nude skateboarding but watch also his disaffected view of his father. The makers really couldn't have done more than bring back the majority of writers from the early years and let them loose on the big screen. Certainly there could have been a lot more of Mr Burns and I must confess I was disappointed by the lack of Sideshow Bob and that Lisa was given comparatively little to do but hey! Rather this than Open Season, right?

2 out of 5 stars Doh! - very disappointing indeed   October 3, 2007

After waiting nearly 20 years to see The Simpsons on the big screen, I couldn't help but feel disappointed with this movie. With such a weak plot that would have still been hard to keep me entertained if it had been in one of the show's 22 minute episodes rather than a 90 minute film.

With so many great characters in the TV show, they were hardly used here in the movie, with only brief cameos (I suppose you'd call it) from regulars such as Mr Burns and Smithers, Moe, Krusty the Clown, Barney, Principal Skinners, Reverand Lovejoy, Apu and the rest of the usually brilliant and hilarious residents of Springfield. Flanders (and The Simpsons, obviously) were the only real stars of the movie, with some new and quite dull characters thrown in unnecessarily.

The comedy also wasn't it's usual clever humour you'd expect when watching the TV show, instead using cheap laughs such as showing Bart's "doodle" and swearing (which I've always admired the creators of the show for avoiding). And don't get me started on the annoying Spider Pig gag!

Overall this is no way near the quality I was hoping for and is not just the most disappointing movie of 2007 but probably one of the disappointing movies ever.

3 out of 5 stars Good - but is it worth the money on DVD?   November 9, 2007

A fun and funny movie with truely ingenious site gags but which looses some momentum around the half way mark. The problem with the DVD release is you are paying full wack for 84 mins of the Simpsons. Buy any Simpsons box set and you get about 600 mins. Do the maths!
Whilst this was great to see in the cinema I would only recommend buying it to fans who already have every episode on DVD. Everybody else should wait for the inevitable budget re-issue in 6 months or so.

This movie is surprisingly good. I did wonder if it would be lame considering the The Simpsons TV has, in my opinion, got less and less funny in recent times.

However, it just felt like a long, decent episode of the TV show - with better drawings. There are some genuinely funny gags - and some that feel a bit recycled. Also, there are some brilliantly inventive action sequences that almost make you want to cheer!
