Amazon.co.uk Review As a pleasant dose of holiday cheer, The Holiday is a lovable love story with all the Christmas trimmings. In the capable hands of writer-director Nancy Meyers (making her first romantic comedy since Something's Gotta Give), it all begins when two successful yet unhappy women connect through a home-swapping website, and decide to trade houses for the Christmas holiday in a mutual effort to forget their man troubles. Iris (Kate Winslet) is a London-based journalist who lives in a picture-postcard cottage in Surrey, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) owns a movie-trailer production company (leading her to cutely imagine most of her life as a "coming attraction") and lives in a posh mansion in Beverly Hills. Iris is heartbroken from unrequited love with a cad of a colleague (Rufus Sewell), and Amanda has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend (Edward Burns), so their home-swapping offers mutual downtime to reassess their love lives. This being a Nancy Meyers movie (where everything is fabulously decorated and romantic wish-fulfillment is virtually guaranteed), Amanda hooks up with Iris's charming brother Graham (Jude Law), and Iris is unexpectedly smitten with Miles (Jack Black), a super-nice film composer on the downside of a failing relationship. --Jeff Shannon

Sweet Transatlantic Romance July 24, 2007 S. Williams (London, UK) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
I was bewitched by this film. Great perfomances from Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. I don't normally like Jack Black that much, but he was actually a much better performer than pretty boy Jude Law who didn't have to do much, but look pretty. A film to watch with your girlfriends (or boyfriend) on a rainy day or Sunday afternoon with a bottle of wine and lots of snacks.
Great 'feel good' movie August 21, 2007 J. Bell (North Yorkshire) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
I am surprised by some of the reviews only giving this film 1 or 2 stars. I thought it was brilliant and so did a male friend of mine. Kate Winslet is endearing as ever and if nothing else Jude Law is just gorgeous in it. Loved Cameron Diaz but wasnt so sure about Jack Black. The story is predictable in places but who cares it is an easy watch.
Could have been good.............. April 18, 2007 Bezerus Bezby (Leeds, UK) 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
Okay, I really think this was a wasted opportunity of a film. I liked the basic idea...two women, one in LA and one in England have disaterous love lives and decide to swap houses for a nice vacation. I liked Kate Winslet-she was a typical Briget Jones style english woman living in a cottage that in reality would probably cost about a million pounds. However, I could forget about all of that, as she was quite a nice jolly character, not shallow at all and kind. I liked the relationship she formed with Jack Black (not annoying for a change) and her elderly neighbour in LA. Cameron Diaz on the other hand was nauseating. Sickly acting, annoying and not likeable in the least. When she was trying to make herself cry, I kind of hoped she would bang her head on the table and knock herself out. Her relationship with Jude Law was equally annoying. Far too much time of the film focused on Cameron and Jude and not enough by far on Kate in LA. This could have been a great romcom- cheesey doesn't necessarily bother me, a nice corny film is just the thing to pass the time on an evening, but this was annoying rubbish really. A shame, as I wanted to like it!

I saw this film in the cinema, and its one of the best romantic comedies I have ever seen. A fairly original idea, not too Christmassy (those films really annoy me!)and just a really feel-good movie. Jack Black has some really classic lines, and makes the film much funnier. This film really is worth seeing, go on, click the buy button!!
MY REVIEW OF THE HOLIDAY August 23, 2007 stuart (MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
(Synopsis) Two beautiful women, Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz) and Iris Simpkins (Kate Winslet) both find themselves at the end of failed relationships just before Christmas. Amanda decides to take a two week vacation and surfs the internet. She meets Iris online, and they agree to swap their homes for the holidays. Amanda lives in Los Angles and Iris lives in the countryside of Surrey, England. Even though they now have a change of scenery and want no contact with men, they are both still depressed and lonely. But things are about to change when Iris' brother Graham (Jude Law) drops by Iris' house and meets Amanda. On the other side of the world, Iris meets Miles (Jack Black) a film composer. Romance is in the air and sparks are about to fly. (My Comment) If you want to see a romantic comedy with real chemistry, especially between Cameron Diaz and Jude Law this is one chick flick you must see. This movie is a good date movie that is actually entertaining and sweet. You are actually seeing two love stories instead of one. There is a great subplot of the friendship between Kate Winslet and Eli Wallach's character that will touch your heart. Actually, I enjoyed that part of the movie the best. Overall, the movie was enjoyable to watch with touching and funny scenes throughout the movie. The ending is predictable, but what do you expect, it is a romantic comedy. You will leave the movie feeling good, and isn't that what movies are all about.
