Amazon.co.uk Review Pauline Collins repeats her stage success as the character Shirley Valentine, a married woman who decides in her middle years that she wants more out of life. Leaving her spouse behind, she heads to Greece, where she grows close to a low-key local bloke (Tom Conti). Collins and director Lewis Gilbert (Educating Rita) choose to let the character, as she did in the play, speak directly to the audience at times and the gamble works in terms of creating a gentle, intimate atmosphere. Conti is a bonus, a warm presence and funny to boot. --Tom Keogh

Fabulous film, shame about the DVD November 11, 2004 83 out of 84 found this review helpful
Shirley Valentine is a wonderful film, a bittersweet comedy that deserves repeated viewings, and a film I'd really looked forward to getting on DVD. The version on this disc is cropped from Widescreen, losing picture information on either side (as was the VHS release). But worst of all, this dvd uses a dubbed US print, meaning that all the words that wouldn't be understood in the US have been dubbed. It is very distracting, but most of all kills the jokes - e.g. "MFI" is replaced with "K-Mart". Very disappointing, and shows a real disregard for the product by Paramount. Stick with the VHS - at least that has the original film on it. 5 stars for the film, but zero for the dvd.
A DVD outrage January 19, 2005 Charles Mackenzie (Glasgow, UK) 33 out of 34 found this review helpful
Firstly... this is a wonderful film. A great British comedy which both BAFTA and the American Academy chose to honour. The wonderful things about this film have been well documented in other reviews. Reviews may I add that refer to the VHS version of the film. And that is where your gaze should still be focussed. The distributors of this DVD have criminally given us a dubbed US version (ruining some of the best jokes), haven't bothered to give us the widescreen version and the print is abysmal. My 12 year old VHS copy is as good quality. Such a disappointment. I was eager to get this to add one of my most treasured films to my DVD collection. This is just not fair!
Shame Paramount Shame!! March 4, 2005 33 out of 35 found this review helpful
Like many other reviewers I was so looking forward to finally having this great classic on DVD. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that several scenes in the film have been re-dubbed for American audiences. I actually purchased this DVD in Australia and hoped that the UK version would stay faithful to the original. But not so as I have read. To make matters worse it is a FULL price DVD with nothing extra on it. I have purchased budget titles that have got more features than the Shirley DVD (i.e. Widescreen & additional footage / outakes etc.)This really ISN'T value for money.
so very very poor December 4, 2004 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
Firstly let me say that this is a great British film, however Paramount have commited a horrible sin in releasing the DVD version that has been dubbed to "Americanise" some of the language. I totally echo the sentiments of my fellow reviewer except that 3 stars is too high, Paramount with any conscience should not have released this dubbed DVD to the UK public.....shocking
DISAGREE WITH OFFICIAL REVIEW March 10, 2000 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
This is most definitely NOT just a film about a bored housewife with an undeserving family, who goes off to Greece and has an affair with a waiter. All this happens, of course, but it's so much more. Apart from being a really funny film, it's about something that almost everyone can relate to; the suddenly realisation that life is passing you by, but that something can still be done about it, although the consequences, as in Shirley's case, may not be what you expect.
